Browns Release Jaret Patterson: Dylan Sampson’s RB2 Role Grows

Information cutoff and source check time: October 28, 2026 at 9:14 a.m. CDT. The Browns transaction, Week 7 usage, current depth chart and Week 8 schedule were rechecked against the linked official team and NFL sources.

Fantasy scoring framework: half PPR, with one point per 10 rushing or receiving yards and six points per rushing or receiving touchdown. League settings can change the value of receptions, return work, defense and IDP production.

The strongest counterargument is that Patterson was a practice squad reserve, so his release does not itself expand Sampson's active game role. The fantasy case rests on Sampson's Week 7 usage and his published No. 2 depth chart position, not on the transaction alone.

The Cleveland Browns brought defensive end Nadame Tucker back to the practice squad Tuesday and released running back Jaret Patterson and safety John Saunders from the unit. The transaction does not change the 53-man roster by itself, but its timing gives fantasy managers a useful clue: after Dylan Sampson returned and immediately produced 77 yards from scrimmage, Cleveland no longer needed Patterson as its extra practice-squad back.

The Browns’ official announcement confirms all three moves. Tucker is a 6-foot-3, 250-pound rookie from Western Michigan who previously spent time on Cleveland’s practice squad. Patterson’s release is not a demotion from the active roster; he had been a practice-squad reserve. Saunders was also on the practice squad.

Why Patterson’s release matters more than the headline

Patterson never had an established Week 8 role, so his departure should not create an immediate touch vacancy. The more important evidence came Sunday. Sampson returned against Tennessee and ran six times for 45 yards while catching three passes for 32 yards. Quinshon Judkins handled 17 carries for a season-high 96 yards and scored twice. Cleveland finished the 27-24 win with a season-high 183 rushing yards.

The Browns’ current depth chart lists Judkins first and Sampson second, followed by Michael Burton, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estimé. That order is not a guarantee of future usage, but it is stronger evidence than Patterson’s former practice-squad status. The transaction narrows the most relevant fantasy contingency tree: Judkins remains the lead runner, while Sampson is the clearest healthy change-of-pace and receiving option.

Fantasy football impact

  • Quinshon Judkins: Keep him in RB2 range after a 17-carry, 96-yard, two-touchdown performance. He owned the meaningful goal-line work in Tennessee, but one strong game does not guarantee every high-value touch.

  • Dylan Sampson: The arrow is up. Nine touches for 77 scrimmage yards in his return showed both rushing efficiency and receiving utility. He is a priority bench hold and a deeper-league flex option, not yet an automatic start.

  • Jaret Patterson: He is not a redraft add after returning to the free-agent pool. His next fantasy value depends entirely on a new landing spot and an active-roster opportunity.

  • Cleveland D/ST and IDP: Tucker is only on the practice squad. Do not upgrade the Browns defense or add him in IDP leagues unless Cleveland elevates or promotes him and defines a game-day role.

What Sampson changes for Cleveland

Sampson gives the offense a different answer behind Judkins. His Week 7 line included a 19-yard run and a 22-yard reception, evidence that Cleveland can use him on perimeter runs, screens and checkdowns instead of asking Judkins to handle every touch. The Browns’ official postgame analysis described Sampson’s run-and-catch versatility as a way to make the offense less predictable.

That does not mean a two-back committee is inevitable. Judkins out-carried Sampson 17 to 6 and converted both of Cleveland’s running back touchdowns. For fantasy purposes, Judkins owns the stronger volume and scoring floor; Sampson owns the more interesting contingent upside if that lead role ever becomes unavailable.

Why Tucker is back

Cleveland released Tucker from the practice squad on October 21 when it added veteran defensive tackle Eric Johnson II, then reversed course six days later. The Browns are now restoring a developmental edge defender while removing two players at positions where their depth picture has changed. Tucker can participate in practice immediately, but he cannot affect the Sunday rotation unless the club elevates him or signs him to the active roster.

This is therefore a depth-management move, not proof of a new pass-rush package. The meaningful checkpoints are Cleveland’s injury report, any weekend elevation and the inactive list.

Week 8 outlook vs. Pittsburgh

The 5-2 Browns visit the 5-2 Steelers on Sunday, November 1. Pittsburgh entered the week allowing 91 rushing yards per game, according to Cleveland’s official Week 8 notes. That makes Judkins’ workload more bankable than a pure matchup ceiling, while Sampson’s receiving role may be the cleaner route to fantasy points if early-down running lanes are limited.

Fantasy managers should avoid converting Patterson’s release into a prediction that Sampson will suddenly split the backfield evenly. The useful conclusion is narrower: Sampson is the confirmed No. 2 on the published depth chart, he produced on nine touches in his return, and Cleveland removed one layer of emergency running back depth after that performance.

What to watch next

  • Sampson’s practice participation and whether Cleveland manages his workload after his first game back.

  • The opening-series and third-down rotation against Pittsburgh.

  • Goal-line personnel after Judkins scored twice in Tennessee.

  • Whether Tucker is elevated from the practice squad for defensive-line depth.

Football Nation verdict

Judkins remains the starter to trust. Sampson is the best contingency hold and a deeper PPR flex candidate after showing immediate two-way production. Patterson’s release does not create a new fantasy opening; it confirms that Cleveland is comfortable moving forward with the active backs already ahead of him. Tucker’s return is a developmental defensive move until a separate promotion changes his status.
