Amar Johnson's Breakout Exposes a Major Chargers and Texans Depth Gap

Los Angeles beat Houston 27 to 7, but the most important difference was not the 20 point margin. The Chargers received production from multiple reserve quarterbacks, a breakout performance from Amar Johnson and a defense that repeatedly finished possessions. The Texans produced one strong opening drive, then crossed midfield only twice the rest of the night. That contrast changes the injury floor for two teams that both expect to compete in the AFC.

Johnson created a real role

Johnson finished with 68 receiving yards and two total touchdowns. His 55 yard reception showed that he can create an explosive play in space, while his rushing touchdown showed that the Chargers can trust him to finish a possession. A depth running back earns regular season work by solving more than one problem. Johnson can catch, carry, protect the starters from excessive workload and contribute when the offense changes pace. The next test is pass protection and special teams. If he handles those assignments, his path to the final roster becomes difficult to block.

The Chargers can survive quarterback disruption

Trey Lance completed 12 of 20 passes for 164 yards. The interception by Kamari Ramsey prevents the night from becoming a complete endorsement, but Lance still moved the offense and created chunk gains. D.J. Uiagalelei added a touchdown pass to Devonte Ross and attacked vertically, while KeAndre Lambert Smith finished with 58 receiving yards. None of those players is replacing Justin Herbert. Their value comes from keeping the offense recognizable if Herbert misses practice time, a series or a short stretch of games. Los Angeles now has multiple developmental options rather than one emergency plan.

Houston's opening drive did not last

Davis Mills led the Texans to a touchdown on the first possession and found Jared Wayne after rookie tight end Marlin Klein created a 31 yard gain. That sequence showed the structure Houston wants behind C.J. Stroud: the line stays connected, a young target creates a mismatch and the backup quarterback delivers on time. The problem is that Houston did not reproduce it. Mills finished with 82 passing yards, one touchdown and a lost fumble. The offense produced no more points, and Graham Mertz left with a knee injury and did not return. Until the medical timeline is clear, Houston must prepare for Mills to absorb nearly all backup work.

The defensive depth separated the teams

The Chargers forced two turnovers on downs, recovered the late Mills fumble and received a sack from Jahmeer Carter. Emany Johnson led the defense with eight tackles. That is the kind of reserve performance that preserves a team's identity when starters rotate out. Houston did receive a useful result from Ramsey's interception, but the defense could not create enough short fields or stops to protect the struggling offense. The Texans need more than isolated splash plays. They need consecutive wins that end possessions.

The 2026 projections

Football Nation projects the Chargers in a 10 to 12 win range and as an AFC playoff contender. Herbert and the starting defense establish the ceiling, while Johnson, Lance, Uiagalelei and the young defenders raise the floor. The projection improves if the reserve offensive line continues creating time for explosive plays. Houston remains in a 9 to 11 win range and in the AFC South race because Stroud and the established defensive talent still matter most. The projection becomes more fragile if Mertz misses significant time and Mills must carry the entire backup plan without more protection or run game support.

Projection verdict

The Chargers left with evidence that their identity can survive beyond the starting lineup. The Texans left with one promising tight end, one useful interception and too many unanswered questions after the opening drive. Johnson's breakout may earn him a role. Houston's backup quarterback situation may force the front office to add another option. Both developments could matter long after the preseason score is forgotten.
