Snap Share vs. Route Participation in Fantasy Football: What They Really Mean

Snap share is the percentage of a team’s offensive plays that a player is on the field. Route participation is the percentage of the team’s quarterback dropbacks or passing plays on which that player runs a route. For fantasy football, route participation is usually the sharper measure of pass-catching opportunity because a player cannot earn a target while blocking or standing on the sideline. Why route participation can reveal more than snap share

Imagine a tight end who plays 54 of 60 offensive snaps, a 90% snap share. But the offense has 36 dropbacks, and he runs only 20 routes because he stays in to protect on 16 pass plays. His route participation is 55.6%. He is essential to the real offense, but almost half of the passing opportunities never give him a chance to be targeted.

Now compare a slot receiver who plays only 42 snaps, a 70% snap share, but runs a route on 32 of 36 dropbacks.
