Austin Johnson Returns: How Jaguars Rebuild the Interior After DaVon Hamilton's Injury

4 min read

Jacksonville's first move after losing nose tackle DaVon Hamilton for the season is practical, familiar and deliberately incomplete. The Jaguars signed veteran defensive tackle Austin Johnson to the practice squad on Monday, bringing back a player who appeared in 14 games for them in 2025. He gives the defense a ready-made contingency before Thursday night's visit to Baltimore, but a practice-squad signing is not the same thing as an active-roster promotion or a guaranteed role.

The immediate answer for Jaguars fans and fantasy managers is simple: Johnson strengthens the emergency plan, while Arik Armstead, Matt Dickerson, Ruke Orhorhoro and Albert Regis remain the active interior committee named by head coach Liam Coen. Johnson's Thursday elevation, game-day status and actual snap share are the next three pieces of evidence.

Why Austin Johnson is the logical first call

Jacksonville is not asking Johnson to learn an entirely new organization on a three-day turnaround. The 32-year-old spent the 2025 season with the Jaguars, playing 14 games and recording 12 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one pass defensed. The club's official roster-move announcement also lists 145 career games, 56 starts, 271 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, 17 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.

Those career totals describe experience, not a promise that Johnson can replace Hamilton one for one. His most likely value is early-down size, short-yardage familiarity and enough scheme knowledge to let the active group preserve its normal roles. That matters on a short week because every extra package installed for a newcomer costs practice time Jacksonville does not have.

The transaction is official: Jacksonville signed Johnson to the practice squad and released long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer. The NFL transaction log independently lists Johnson as a Nov. 2 practice-squad veteran signing.

Hamilton's absence changes the rotation, not just one lineup spot

Hamilton had 16 tackles, half a sack and a forced fumble through seven games on Jacksonville's current team-stat page. More important, his job as the point player against double teams helped the second level flow cleanly to the ball. Official Jaguars reporting described him as a key to one of the NFL's best run defenses and said the replacement plan would be by committee.

That committee has different answers for different situations. Armstead supplies the most accomplished interior pass-rush résumé. Dickerson offers veteran early-down snaps. Orhorhoro brings movement and penetration, while Regis gives Jacksonville a rookie power option. Johnson can become a fifth game-day answer if the Jaguars elevate him, especially when Baltimore uses heavy personnel or forces the defense to survive long drives.

The comparison period matters. Jacksonville's official reporting had the defense first in the league at 63.8 rushing yards allowed per game through five games after finishing first in 2025 at 85.6. Those figures establish the standard Hamilton helped create; they are not a claim that the same ranking automatically survives his injury.

The official Jaguars post above captures Coen's central message: the group will be tested, and Jacksonville expects it to stay connected. That is the correct frame for Johnson's return. One signing does not erase the injury, but it can reduce the number of jobs that must be redesigned at once.

What changes Thursday against Baltimore

Jacksonville visits Baltimore at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 5. Short-week football rewards assignment certainty. If Johnson is elevated, his most useful snaps could come in obvious run situations and goal-line packages, allowing Armstead and Orhorhoro to stay fresher for passing downs. If he is not elevated, Dickerson and Regis become more important early-down pieces.

The strongest uncertainty is conditioning and role overlap. Johnson was most recently on Buffalo's practice squad, and Jacksonville has not announced that he will play. Even a familiar veteran may need a reduced menu after joining during a short week. The counterargument to an immediate Johnson role is straightforward: the four active tackles already know the current 2026 plan, and the Jaguars may prefer continuity over a rushed elevation.

Fantasy football and IDP impact

In standard fantasy formats, Johnson is not a waiver add. A practice-squad defensive tackle without a confirmed game-day role should stay on the watch list, even in deeper IDP leagues. The actionable sequence is elevation, active status, snap share and then tackle opportunity. Skipping those steps turns roster depth into a fantasy projection the evidence does not support.

For Jaguars D/ST, the signing is mildly positive because it adds a veteran contingency after a major interior loss. It does not remove the downgrade attached to losing Hamilton. Jacksonville's pass rush and takeaway ability can still make the unit usable, but managers should not treat a practice-squad transaction as proof that the run-defense baseline is unchanged.

Next checkpoints

  • Whether Jacksonville elevates Johnson from the practice squad before Thursday.

  • The 90-minute game-day inactive list and the number of defensive tackles dressed.

  • Early-down alignment: who plays nose, who absorbs double teams and who gets the pass-rush snaps next to Armstead.

  • Johnson's first snap count before any IDP or Jaguars D/ST conclusion is upgraded.

Sources and methodology

Material facts were checked Nov. 3, 2026 at 9:03 a.m. CST. Johnson's 2025 line and career totals use Jacksonville's Nov. 2 roster-move announcement. Hamilton's status, the named committee and the team's description of his run-defense role use the Jaguars' Nov. 2 injury report. The roster location uses Jacksonville's current roster page. The game date and time use the official 2026 schedule. Team statistics use the Jaguars' current 2026 page, with comparison periods stated in the text.

Football Nation conclusion

Johnson's return is a sensible depth move, not a declaration that Hamilton has been replaced. Jacksonville gains a 314-pound veteran who knows the building and has 145 games of NFL experience. The active defense still belongs to a committee, and Thursday will reveal whether Johnson is part of it immediately. For fantasy managers, keep Johnson off standard rosters, keep Jaguars D/ST in the matchup conversation and let the elevation and snap evidence decide the next adjustment.
