Bengals 33, Buccaneers 27: Four Fumbles Fuel Cincinnati
Cincinnati turns Tampa Bay giveaways into control, gets four Evan McPherson field goals, and survives a late Baker Mayfield push.

Cincinnati made every loose ball hurt
The Bengals did not need a monster Ja'Marr Chase performance to open with a win. They needed their defense to attack the football and their offense to make those opportunities expensive. Cincinnati beat Tampa Bay 33 to 27 after recovering four Buccaneers fumbles, including one that Demetrius Knight Jr. returned 27 yards for a touchdown.
Tampa Bay kept dragging itself back toward the game. A defensive touchdown and Baker Mayfield's late scoring run made the ending uncomfortable. But Cincinnati had already built the advantage through a much broader collection of contributors: the pass rush, the tight end, the running back and a kicker who kept adding points when drives stalled.

The comeback met one final completion
Cincinnati led 21 to 3 in the second quarter and 24 to 10 at halftime. The Buccaneers fought back behind Josiah Trotter's 38 yard interception return and eventually cut the margin to six on Mayfield's nine yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining. That brought the pressure squarely back onto Joe Burrow.
Burrow answered by connecting with Tee Higgins for an important 18 yard gain as Cincinnati drained the closing clock. The Bengals had spent much of the day profiting from Tampa Bay mistakes. Their final responsibility was different: execute a possession well enough to prevent Mayfield from getting another chance.

Passing accuracy could not erase the fumbles
Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes, an excellent completion percentage. He threw no interceptions. Yet those familiar passing indicators miss the central issue: he lost three fumbles, and Bucky Irving lost another. Cincinnati's four sacks helped make the pocket a dangerous place to operate.
The Bengals gained 351 yards to Tampa Bay's 282 and converted eight of 14 third downs. They were only two of five in the red zone, which left work to do, but Evan McPherson converted all four field goal attempts. His makes from 55 and 58 yards meant possessions could become points even when Cincinnati failed to reach normal scoring territory.

The stars shared the spotlight
Burrow finished with 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 25 completions in 35 attempts. Mike Gesicki caught five passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Higgins added 59 yards on three catches. Chase was limited to two receptions for 12 yards on four targets, yet Cincinnati still generated enough offense to win.
Chase Brown carried 16 times for 56 yards and a touchdown and added five catches for 22 yards. Irving had only eight carries, but seven receptions brought his total to 93 scrimmage yards. Emeka Egbuka led Tampa Bay's receivers with 63 yards, while Trotter's interception return gave the Buccaneers a major contribution from their own defense.

Fantasy lessons from an unusual opener
Brown's 21 combined carries and catches are a stronger usage clue than the 3.5 yards per rush. Gesicki's seven targets are worth tracking, especially after Cincinnati demonstrated that it could distribute the passing game away from its famous outside receivers. Chase's quiet opener is a data point, not proof of a lasting role change.
Irving caught all seven targets. That receiving involvement helped cushion a game in which Tampa Bay chased the score and he logged only eight rushing attempts. Mayfield's accurate passing should be weighed alongside the turnovers and sacks rather than treated as an all clear. The Buccaneers need cleaner protection and ball security for those completions to become reliable scoring possessions.

Cincinnati showed it can win through contributions beyond its headline receiving duo. The next step is pairing that disruptive defense with more consistent red zone finishing. Tampa Bay's late fight kept the margin close, but four lost fumbles are too much damage to normalize. Cincinnati visits Houston next and Tampa Bay hosts Cleveland. Both teams leave Week 1 knowing exactly which part of the performance needs to travel forward and which part must be corrected.
