Brashard Smith Ruled Out: Jaydn Ott Set for NFL Debut vs. Seahawks

Kansas City will be without running back and return option Brashard Smith against Seattle, opening the door for rookie Jaydn Ott to make his NFL debut on Sunday Night Football.

The Chiefs listed Smith as out on Friday after a hamstring injury limited him Thursday and kept him out of the final practice. Arrowhead Pride reported that head coach Andy Reid confirmed Ott is expected to be elevated from the practice squad for Sunday. Until Kansas City completes that move and releases its active list, fantasy managers should treat Ott as a likely game-day depth option—not as a locked-in offensive contributor.

What changed in the Chiefs’ backfield

Kansas City’s unofficial depth chart lists Kenneth Walker first, Emmett Johnson second and Smith third at running back. Smith also sits behind Nikko Remigio at both kick returner and punt returner, so his absence affects more than the reserve rushing rotation.

Smith has appeared in three games this season with one reception for four yards. That limited offensive usage is an important baseline: replacing his roster spot does not automatically create a meaningful fantasy workload.

Ott, an undrafted rookie from Oklahoma, is listed at 5-foot-11 and 208 pounds. His official Chiefs profile shows no regular-season statistics. The team did feature his 27-yard reception in the preseason, evidence of receiving ability but not a reliable projection for Sunday’s role.

Fantasy football impact

  • Kenneth Walker remains the clear fantasy start. Smith’s absence does not threaten Walker’s lead role, and it may slightly consolidate the backfield if Kansas City keeps its normal offensive plan.

  • Emmett Johnson is the more logical contingency option because he is already listed second on the depth chart. Deep-league managers should prioritize Johnson over Ott if choosing only one reserve.

  • Ott is a watch-list player in dynasty and very deep formats, not a standard-league waiver add. A practice-squad elevation guarantees only roster availability, not touches.

  • For single-game DFS, Ott should be considered only after the active list confirms he will dress. Even then, his most probable path is special teams and emergency depth, making him a highly volatile punt.

Why pass protection matters this week

Seattle has recorded 16 sacks through six games, according to the team’s current official statistics. Kansas City is also replacing starting right tackle Jaylon Moore, who was ruled out with a concussion. That combination raises the importance of protection assignments for every reserve back.

A rookie back can lose offensive snaps quickly if the coaching staff does not trust his blitz recognition. Ott’s debut opportunity therefore depends as much on pass protection and special-teams readiness as it does on rushing or receiving talent.

Three checkpoints before kickoff

  • Official elevation: Kansas City must announce Ott’s game-day elevation before he can play.

  • Active/inactive list: Confirm Ott is active about 90 minutes before kickoff. An elevation alone does not guarantee he will dress.

  • Return assignment: With Smith out, watch whether Remigio handles both return jobs or whether Ott receives work on special teams. That clue may reveal the size of Ott’s overall role.

Bottom line

Smith’s hamstring injury creates a legitimate debut path for Ott, but not an automatic fantasy role. Walker remains the Kansas City back to start, Johnson is the next reserve to monitor, and Ott belongs on watch lists until the Chiefs confirm both his elevation and active status.

Factual cutoff: October 23, 2026 at 7:17 p.m. Central. Kansas City has ruled Brashard Smith and Jaylon Moore out. Andy Reid confirmed through reporting that Jaydn Ott is expected to be elevated, but the official transaction and active list remain the next checkpoints.
