Brian Branch, DJ Wonnum Ruled Out With Concussions: Lions Week 9 Impact

Detroit’s 19 to 15 win over Minnesota came with another serious defensive concern. Safety Brian Branch and edge rusher DJ Wonnum collided while converging on a tackle late in the second quarter, and both were ruled out with concussions before the second half.
Detroit has not announced a Week 9 availability decision for either defender. Fantasy managers should treat both players as uncertain until they progress through the NFL concussion protocol and appear on the Lions’ first practice report before Sunday’s road game against Miami.
What happened to Brian Branch and DJ Wonnum?
The Lions’ official recap says Wonnum took a hit from Branch as both defenders attempted the same tackle. Both players left for the locker room and were ruled out at halftime. The collision was especially notable because Branch was playing only his second game of the season after a long Achilles rehabilitation.
Branch had returned with an interception, a pass defensed and four tackles against Green Bay in Week 7. He added three combined tackles against Minnesota before leaving. Through two games, Detroit’s official player page credits him with seven combined tackles, one interception and one pass defensed.
Wonnum has been one of Detroit’s most productive pass rushers. The Lions’ current team statistics list 14 total tackles and five sacks, tying Aidan Hutchinson for the team lead. Losing a starting safety and a five sack edge player on the same play would affect two different layers of the defense.
Detroit’s replacement plan
Detroit’s official depth chart lists Christian Izien behind Branch at safety. In Sunday’s game, however, rookie Keith Abney II replaced Branch and handled meaningful snaps. Abney already has an interception this season, so he is the clearest deep league IDP name to monitor if Branch cannot practice.
Behind Wonnum, the depth chart lists Tyler Lacy and Ahmed Hassanein. Eric O’Neill also played important defensive snaps against Minnesota. Detroit can redistribute edge work among those players, but none has matched Wonnum’s five sack production. Hutchinson and interior rushers Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams would carry more pressure responsibility.
Lions D/ST fantasy impact for Week 9
The Lions remain a viable matchup based defense against Miami, but their ceiling depends on which injured starters return. Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis has thrown five interceptions and has been sacked 21 times through seven starts, creating takeaway and sack opportunities even for a depleted defense.
Wonnum’s status is the most direct factor for sack upside. If he is unavailable, Detroit loses a player responsible for five of the team’s sacks. Branch’s absence would affect coverage flexibility, tackling and the ability to disguise pressure from the secondary. If Branch, Wonnum, Jack Campbell and D.J. Reed all miss practice, Detroit should be treated as a volatile streamer rather than an automatic start.
Miami fantasy implications
Malik Willis: A reduced Detroit pass rush would improve his time to throw, but five interceptions and a 79.7 passer rating keep him in the matchup dependent quarterback tier. His 225 rushing yards still provide the safer fantasy floor.
Malik Washington: Miami’s receiving yardage leader would gain the clearest benefit if Detroit must replace Branch or simplify its coverages.
Caleb Douglas: His 226 yards and two receiving touchdowns make him a deeper league upside option, especially if Detroit is missing multiple defensive backs.
Greg Dulcich: A Branch absence could matter on interior routes, but Dulcich’s fantasy value still depends on target volume rather than one individual matchup.
Ollie Gordon II and De’Von Achane: Wonnum’s absence matters less directly to the running backs than Detroit’s linebacker injuries, so Jack Campbell’s status should be monitored separately.
IDP fantasy impact
Branch should be held in deeper IDP leagues and formats that require defensive backs, but managers need a contingency until he clears protocol. His seven tackles and one interception in two games show immediate playmaking value after the Achilles recovery. Abney and Izien are speculative replacements rather than automatic starts.
Wonnum’s five sacks make him the more difficult player to replace in big play IDP scoring. Hold him where injured reserve or bench space allows. Lacy, Hassanein and O’Neill are watch list options only; Detroit may rotate all three instead of giving one player Wonnum’s full workload.
What fantasy managers should monitor
Monday and Tuesday: any team update on symptoms or additional evaluation.
Wednesday: whether Branch or Wonnum participates in Detroit’s first Week 9 practice.
Thursday and Friday: progression from no participation to limited or full work.
Friday: final game designations and any practice squad elevation at safety or edge rusher.
Sunday morning: active and inactive status before Lions versus Dolphins kicks off at 1 p.m. Eastern.
Bottom line
Branch and Wonnum are not interchangeable losses. Branch affects coverage, tackling and disguise, while Wonnum supplies five sack edge production. The strongest counterargument is the matchup. Miami quarterback Malik Willis has taken 21 sacks and thrown five interceptions, so Detroit still offers fantasy appeal. The Lions D/ST becomes less stable if both defenders remain sidelined. Hold both players in deeper IDP formats, monitor practice participation and avoid assuming either will play until the concussion protocol is complete.
