The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shut out the Atlanta Falcons 16 to 0 at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday by turning a rain soaked divisional game into a rushing and turnover contest. Tampa Bay completed no passes, ran for 324 yards and intercepted Michael Penix Jr. four times. Bucky Irving rushed for 170 yards and the only touchdown. The Buccaneers improved to 3 and 5 overall and 2 and 0 in the NFC South, while Atlanta fell to 3 and 5.

The answer: Tampa Bay accepted the weather first

Rain arrived before kickoff and alternated between steady and torrential. Baker Mayfield attempted only three passes and completed none. Tampa Bay stopped throwing early in the second quarter, kept the ball on the ground and finished with 56 rushing attempts. That choice was not surrender. It was the cleanest path to win once the conditions made ball security and field position more valuable than normal passing volume.

Chase McLaughlin supplied the first nine points with field goals from 46, 34 and 42 yards. The Buccaneers finally reached the end zone late in the third quarter after Irving broke a 46 yard run and Kenny Gainwell added a 28 yard burst. Irving finished the drive with a four yard touchdown run for a 16 to 0 lead.

Verified leaders and the unusual box score

Irving carried 27 times for 170 yards and a touchdown. Gainwell added a career high 140 yards on 25 carries. Mayfield finished zero for three passing for zero gross yards. Tampa Bay became the first NFL team since Buffalo in 1974 to win without completing a pass, according to the Buccaneers' official postgame report.

Penix completed eight of 24 passes for 125 yards with four interceptions and a 12.0 passer rating. Jahan Dotson caught two passes for 95 yards, including a 76 yard broken play late in the game. Bijan Robinson carried 19 times for 76 yards. Atlanta produced 224 net yards, went zero for 12 on third down and possessed the ball for only 24:44.

Four interceptions changed the shape of the game

Alex Anzalone intercepted Penix twice on Atlanta's second and third possessions. Jacob Parrish added another pick in the first half, and Zyon McCollum collected the fourth at the start of the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay did not convert every takeaway into points, but each one reduced the number of possessions Atlanta had to challenge a slow, weather driven game.

Atlanta did create one major defensive play. Jessie Bates III punched the ball out of Irving's hands just before the goal line, sending it through the end zone for a touchback. The forced fumble prevented an early touchdown and kept the game close. The Falcons could not use the reprieve because their own passing game kept returning possession to Tampa Bay.

Why the shutout matters

The Buccaneers finished with 322 net yards despite producing negative net passing yardage after sack accounting. Their 324 rushing yards set a franchise record. More important than the record was the control. Tampa Bay held the ball for 35:16, avoided the reckless throws the weather invited and let its defense repeatedly play with favorable field position.

Atlanta's strongest counterargument is that the conditions were extreme enough to distort normal evaluation. That is fair for the passing numbers, especially Mayfield's zero completions. It does not erase the Falcons' four interceptions, zero for 12 third down rate or inability to match Tampa Bay's physical run game. Both teams played in the same rain, and only one built a functional answer.

Fantasy consequences

Irving remains an automatic fantasy starter. The 27 carries show that Tampa Bay will lean on him when the game calls for volume, and the touchdown confirmed the goal line role even after his earlier fumble. Gainwell's 25 carries and 140 yards demand attention, but this was an extreme weather script. He is a priority depth option and possible flex when the Buccaneers project to run heavily, not a guaranteed co starter every week.

For Atlanta, Robinson's 19 carries preserved a usable floor, but the offense created no scoring chances. Penix is a bench until the matchup and weather stabilize after a four interception day. Dotson's 95 yards came largely from one 76 yard play, so his total should not be treated as proof of a new high volume role.

Injuries and next checkpoints

Falcons wide receiver and returner Zachariah Branch was ruled out during the first quarter with a hamstring injury, according to Atlanta's official recap. Buccaneers outside linebacker Yaya Diaby left early with a knee injury. Coach Todd Bowles said Monday that Diaby has an MCL sprain, according to Reuters. His practice status is the next defensive checkpoint before Tampa Bay faces Chicago.

The Buccaneers host the Bears on Sunday night in Week 9. The Falcons travel to Madrid to face Cincinnati at 8:30 AM CST. Atlanta must repair its third down plan and protect Penix from another turnover spiral. Tampa Bay must decide how much of this run heavy identity travels into normal weather.
