Tampa Bay's Plus 709 Run Differential: Why the Week 9 Identity Must Travel

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found a real identity after an 0 and 4 start: control games on the ground and erase an opponent's rushing advantage. Through eight games, Tampa Bay had gained 1,349 rushing yards and allowed 640, a plus 709 difference that was far ahead of the rest of the league in the official Nov. 2 snapshot.

That number is more useful than the novelty of winning without a completed pass. The 16 to 0 shutout of Atlanta was shaped by extreme rain, but the two week ground surge and the defense's early down discipline can travel. The Week 9 question is whether those strengths can support a normal passing plan against Chicago rather than replace one.

The last two games changed the offense

Tampa Bay ran for a franchise record 324 yards against Atlanta one week after producing 258 at Carolina. The 582 yards across those two victories were the most in any two game span in franchise history and the fifth most by an NFL team in a two game span since 1982, according to the Buccaneers' official Data Crunch.

Bucky Irving carried 27 times for 170 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 attempts. They became the first teammates in NFL history to each record at least 25 carries and 125 rushing yards in the same game. This was not merely fourth quarter clock killing. The backs created the game plan.

The defense completed the run equation

The other half of the plus 709 differential is Tampa Bay's run defense. Through eight games the Buccaneers had not allowed an individual 100 yard rusher and were giving up 80 rushing yards per game. Atlanta's Bijan Robinson entered Week 8 as the league's rushing leader, then finished with 76 yards on 19 carries.

The defense also held Atlanta to zero conversions on 12 third downs, stopped three of six fourth downs and intercepted Michael Penix Jr. four times. Alex Anzalone made two of those interceptions in the first quarter. Tampa Bay allowed 224 total yards and posted its first shutout since the 2023 season finale.

What is repeatable and what is not

The repeatable part is the offensive line's ability to create efficient carries, the backs' patience and the defense's gap discipline. The coaching staff can also repeat the commitment to staying ahead of the chains. Those traits explain why three of the ten largest rushing games in franchise history occurred within a four week stretch.

The nonrepeatable part is a game with 56 rushing attempts and only three passes. Baker Mayfield completed none of those three attempts, making Tampa Bay the first team to win without a completion since Buffalo in 1974. That history is interesting, but it is not a sustainable offensive target.

Fantasy consequence: separate role from weather

Irving is a weekly fantasy starter because his role and production extend beyond one rain game. Gainwell earned stronger flex and roster consideration, but 25 carries should not be treated as his new baseline until another game confirms the split. The most defensible projection is a run first committee with Irving leading the valuable touches.

Mayfield and the Tampa Bay pass catchers should not be downgraded solely because of the zero completion box score. The weather drove an extreme plan. Managers should instead watch practice participation, route volume and Chicago's coverage plan before setting Week 9 lineups. Tampa Bay's defense and special teams has earned streaming attention because the run defense and takeaways can create a useful floor.

The strongest counterargument

The two game rushing explosion came against Carolina and Atlanta, and the Atlanta game was played in conditions that nearly removed passing from both playbooks. A plus 709 rushing differential does not automatically solve third and long, two minute offense or a deficit. Chicago can test whether Tampa Bay can preserve its ground advantage while still asking Mayfield to win obvious passing downs.

Next checkpoint: Sunday night in Chicago

The official Week 9 game center lists Tampa Bay at Chicago on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 8:20 PM Eastern. The Buccaneers were 3 and 5 and the Bears 6 and 2 at the current official cutoff. The next evaluation is specific: early down run efficiency, pass protection when Chicago forces longer downs, and whether the Bucs defense can keep its no 100 yard rusher streak intact.

Football Nation's conclusion: the Bucs do not need another 324 yard outlier to prove this identity is real. They need the run game to create manageable downs, the defense to keep winning gaps and the passing game to punish Chicago when it crowds the box. That balanced version of the plus 709 advantage is the one that can survive beyond bad weather.
