Cam Lampkin’s Promotion Changes the Rams’ Game Day Math
The Los Angeles Rams made five roster moves Wednesday, but the most important football signal is the active roster exchange. Running back Dean Connors went to injured reserve after breaking his hand, while cornerback Cam Lampkin was promoted from the practice squad. The move does not make Lampkin a projected starter. It does make him a stable part of the weekly defensive back and special teams plan instead of a player Los Angeles must handle through another temporary transaction.
The Rams announced the moves in an official X post at 12:27 PM Central on Nov. 4. The team’s transaction ledger independently lists Connors to injured reserve, Lampkin to the active roster, Alex Bachman released and re-signed to the practice squad, Nyzier Fourqurean signed to the practice squad and Garrett Nelson terminated from the practice squad.
Why the permanent promotion matters
Lampkin had already been elevated from the practice squad for the Rams’ Oct. 3, Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 games. That comparison period matters: Los Angeles had three separate opportunities to evaluate how he fit its game-day operation before giving him an active roster place. A permanent promotion ends the weekly elevation question and lets the staff plan with him available, although it still does not guarantee he will be active every Sunday.
The official player log lists Lampkin at 5-foot-11 and 174 pounds. Across the 2026 preseason, his three game logs add up to 15 total tackles, two passes defensed and one sack. Preseason production is not a promise of regular-season coverage success, but those plays do support the traits Los Angeles is buying: open-field pursuit, willingness to tackle and enough coverage competitiveness to function as emergency cornerback depth.

The game-day consequence is flexibility
The clearest role is special teams with defensive insurance attached. Lampkin’s official biography says he has appeared in four regular-season games and contributed on special teams. That matters because the last few active positions on game day must cover more than one emergency. A corner who can run on coverage units can protect the defense against an in-game injury without occupying a spot that contributes only on defense.
The Rams also restored Fourqurean to the practice squad. That does not tell us who would play first in every coverage package, and it would be a mistake to invent a new depth chart from transaction language alone. It does show that Los Angeles kept two developmental corner options in the building while moving the more frequently used one onto the active roster.
The strongest counterargument is that this is mostly administrative. Lampkin could dress only when another defensive back is unavailable, and his regular-season defensive snaps could remain minimal. That is plausible. The rebuttal is not that he suddenly owns a defensive role; it is that repeated elevations followed by promotion are better evidence of weekly utility than a one-off signing would be.
Connors’ injury does not change the fantasy starters
Connors’ injured reserve placement removes the third running back from the Rams’ published unofficial depth chart. Head coach Sean McVay said Monday that Connors had broken his hand and would undergo surgery, so Wednesday’s move confirms the expected roster consequence rather than revealing a new setback.
For fantasy football, there is no immediate reason to increase Kyren Williams or Blake Corum solely because of this transaction. Connors was the contingency option behind them, not a documented weekly volume threat. The meaningful fantasy signal would come later: another running back added to the active roster, a game-day elevation, an injury designation for Williams or Corum, or an actual change in their snap and route shares. Until one of those appears, the backfield hierarchy should be treated as unchanged.
What to check next
The next checkpoint is the Rams’ final Week 9 injury report and Sunday inactive list. Those documents will show whether Lampkin’s active roster promotion turns into a game-day uniform against Washington. After the game, special teams snaps and any defensive usage will tell us whether Los Angeles sees him as a core coverage-unit player, pure emergency depth or both.
Reporting note: Material facts were checked against current official sources at 12:47 PM CST on Nov. 4, 2026. The comparison window for Lampkin’s prior use is Oct. 3 through Oct. 24, the three dates on which the Rams’ official transaction ledger records standard elevations.
