The Los Angeles Chargers’ new unofficial depth chart gives a direct answer to the most important Week 9 question: the offense is preparing to use a heavier 21 personnel structure to protect Justin Herbert, feature Omarion Hampton and create simpler throws against Houston. On defense, the chart is less settled. Two cornerback spots contain OR designations, making the first full practice report the next decisive checkpoint.

This is a structure story, not a claim that the listed starters are guaranteed to play every snap. The Chargers explicitly label the chart unofficial. Football Nation checked the team chart, the club’s Monday injury update and the NFL game page on Nov. 4, 2026 at 12:42 p.m. Central. The comparison period is Los Angeles’ first seven games of the 2026 season.

Why 21 personnel is the clearest offensive clue

The official chart lists one running back, one fullback, one tight end and two receivers as the base offense. Hampton is the starting back, Scott Matlock is the fullback, Charlie Kolar is the tight end, and Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston are the two starting receivers. That grouping can make the same huddle present downhill run, split-flow play action or a two-receiver route concept without substituting.

For Herbert, the benefit is defined information. A defense that answers the fullback with an extra box defender can create cleaner one-on-one access outside. A defense that stays light can be tested by Hampton behind Matlock. The point is not to become predictable. It is to force Houston to declare its fit before the snap.

The counterargument is that a depth chart is administrative, not a play sheet. Los Angeles can still spend long stretches in three-receiver personnel. That is why early-down usage, not the published chart alone, will show whether 21 personnel is a genuine identity change.

The protection plan has to match the personnel plan

The listed offensive line is Travis Burke at left tackle, Kayode Awosika at left guard, Jake Slaughter at center, Cole Strange at right guard and Joe Alt at right tackle. Logan Taylor is the only listed backup covering both guard spots, while Jacob Spomer backs up center. That is a narrow interior margin.

A heavier formation helps only if the extra surface changes the rush picture. Matlock can insert through the front, Kolar can chip an edge, and the offense can move the launch point. The best version of this plan reduces obvious third-and-long situations. The worst version crowds the box without creating explosive throws.

What the secondary OR designations reveal

At cornerback, the Chargers list Tarheeb Still OR Cam Hart at one starting spot and Donte Jackson OR Cam Hart at the other. Hart is the swing piece. Deane Leonard, Rodney Shelley and Isas Waxter are the listed backups. The chart therefore signals flexibility, but also uncertainty about which combination can carry the full coverage menu.

The Monday team update said Jackson and Shelley would continue ramping up, while Leonard remained in the concussion protocol. Those are confirmed status notes, not guarantees of Week 9 availability. If the group remains limited, Los Angeles may need more zone spacing and safety help. If it gets healthier, the defense can use more matchup coverage and pressure variation.

Fantasy consequence: volume is clearer than efficiency

For fantasy football, Hampton’s listing as the starting back keeps him at the center of the workload projection, with Keaton Mitchell OR Kimani Vidal behind him. McConkey and Johnston remain the clearest receiver routes. Kolar is the listed starting tight end while David Njoku works through a possible return window, so Njoku should not be treated as an automatic Week 9 starter until activation and game status are confirmed.

NFL’s Week 9 game page listed Herbert at 1,398 passing yards with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions through seven games. Hampton was listed at 309 rushing yards on 89 attempts, and McConkey at 286 receiving yards on 17 catches. Those first-seven-game totals describe a low-efficiency offense, which is exactly why the personnel change matters. It does not by itself guarantee a fantasy breakout.

The strongest uncertainty

Los Angeles is 0-7, and a clean depth chart cannot erase protection breakdowns, turnovers or missed opportunities. The strongest case against the reset is that Houston can win early downs and force the Chargers back into the same obvious passing situations. Football Nation’s conclusion is narrower: 21 personnel is the right tool because it gives Herbert answers and Hampton a defined runway, but the chart becomes meaningful only if Los Angeles uses it to stay ahead of the sticks.

Next checkpoint

The next checkpoint is the first full Week 9 practice report, especially Awosika, Jackson, Leonard and Shelley. The second is Sunday’s opening 15 plays against Houston at SoFi Stadium. Watch whether Matlock is on the field with Hampton and whether Hart is aligned as the movable corner. Those two details will show if the unofficial chart became the real game plan.
