Cardinals Interior Defense Needs a Functional Rotation

Arizona's interior defense should be evaluated as a rotation rather than a search for one player to handle every situation. Early down strength, passing down movement and stamina demand different traits. The Cardinals need combinations that preserve the run fit while still creating a pocket the quarterback cannot comfortably step through. The embedded posts provide current Cardinals context from camp and the roster. They help frame the players involved, but they do not show every double team or gap responsibility. Interior work is often most valuable when it prevents someone else from being blocked. On early downs, the rotation must hold vertical ground. Penetration can be useful, but an uncontrolled charge can open a cutback lane. Arizona needs tackles who understand when to anchor, when to cross a face and how their alignment affects the linebackers behind them.

Passing downs create a different test. The Cardinals can use quicker interior players, games with the edge rushers and selective pressure. The goal is to close the quarterback's step up lane so outside speed has somewhere to finish. A rush that arrives together is more dangerous than isolated wins. Interior rotation affects the edge rush as well. A quarterback who can step forward neutralizes outside speed, while a firm interior forces him to retreat or move laterally. Arizona can help every rusher by closing the center of the pocket. That is why an interior player can create value without recording the final pressure or tackle.

Watch which pairings appear in short yardage and third down. Also track whether technique fades late in a series. A player who dominates three snaps but loses leverage on the fourth may fit a specialized role rather than a full workload. Arizona does not need identical players across the interior. It needs roles that connect. If one group controls the run and another changes the pocket without exposing the same weakness, the rotation can become a strength greater than any single name.
