Texans at Chargers Week 9 Preview: Rest, Turnovers and the First Win Test

8 min read

Houston comes out of its Week 8 bye with a 2-5 record and a narrow path back toward relevance. Los Angeles enters 0-7, but its defense has played well enough to keep games within reach while the offense has repeatedly handed away field position and scoring chances. That contrast makes this less a simple favorite versus winless opponent game than a test of whether the Texans can turn rest and ball security into a controlled road win.

Information cutoff: November 3, 2026 at 12:53 a.m. Central. Records, statistics, market prices, injury context and the prediction below reflect information available at that cutoff. Week 9 practice reports and game day inactives were not yet available, so those items remain checkpoints rather than assumed facts.

Where the teams stand

Houston is 2-5 after a 27-21 overtime loss to the Giants on October 25 and then a Week 8 bye. The extra week matters because the Texans can reset protection calls, evaluate a running game that has not produced consistent efficiency and build a plan around C.J. Stroud's best trait this season: avoiding the catastrophic throw. Stroud has completed 160 of 247 passes for 1,867 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception, a 64.8 percent completion rate and a 100.7 passer rating. He has taken 15 sacks.

Los Angeles is the league's only 0-7 team after a 24-9 loss to the Rams. The Chargers have gone nine quarters and 27 consecutive drives without an offensive touchdown. Justin Herbert has completed 131 of 212 passes for 1,398 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions while taking 23 sacks. The offense has scored nine touchdowns in seven games and owns a minus-six turnover margin.

Those turnover profiles form the clearest predictive edge. Houston is plus three in turnover margin. Los Angeles is minus six. Turnovers are volatile, but they are not empty noise here: the Chargers' protection and Herbert's decision making have repeatedly created short fields, while Stroud's low interception total has kept Houston from compounding its other offensive limitations.

When Houston has the ball

The Texans do not need a high-variance plan. They need an efficient one. Los Angeles has allowed 2,261 offensive yards and 19 touchdowns, but the Chargers' pass rush still has players who can change a series. Tuli Tuipulotu and Khalil Mack have three sacks apiece, with Akheem Mesidor at 2.5. Houston should use early-down play action, quick in-breaking routes and protection answers that keep Stroud out of obvious third-and-long situations.

Jaylin Noel leads Houston with 331 receiving yards, followed by Nico Collins at 329 and Dalton Schultz at 322. That distribution gives the Texans multiple ways to attack a defense that may still be without key secondary pieces. The counter is that Houston cannot become too horizontal. Los Angeles has enough speed to rally to checkdowns, so the Texans need selected intermediate shots after establishing the threat of Woody Marks and the run game.

Marks has 271 rushing yards on 77 carries with two touchdowns. His 3.5 yards per carry is not a reason to force volume for its own sake, but the run has value if it keeps the Chargers from tilting every early down toward Stroud. Houston's best offensive sequence is run or screen for manageable gains, play action behind it, then use Collins or Noel to attack the space vacated by linebackers.

When Los Angeles has the ball

The Chargers' first job is to stop creating extra possessions for Houston. Herbert has thrown 10 interceptions and has been sacked 23 times. The offensive line did have a better individual result against the Rams, with Joe Alt credited by the team with allowing no pressures, but one clean edge does not solve the full protection and decision problem.

Omarion Hampton leads Los Angeles with 308 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The backfield could still operate by the hot hand, according to Jim Harbaugh's Monday update, so fantasy managers should avoid assuming a fixed touch split before the active list. The run game has to keep Houston's front honest and reduce the number of long dropbacks in which disguised coverage can tempt Herbert into a late throw.

Ladd McConkey has 17 catches for 286 yards and a touchdown, while Tre Harris has 18 catches for 256 yards. McConkey's 16.8 yards per catch shows the explosive element, but the Chargers also need him as a chain mover. Houston should try to make Los Angeles string together 10 or more clean plays rather than concede an early explosive target. The Chargers' path is more credible if Herbert can take the available completion and preserve the next down.

Injuries and replacement plans

No Week 9 practice report was available at the cutoff. Houston's most recent official final report before the bye ruled safety Reed Blankenship, tackle Blake Fisher, running back David Montgomery and safety Jalen Pitre out against the Giants, with Tank Dell questionable. Those are reference points, not Week 9 designations. The extra week may change availability, and the first Houston practice report is the next authoritative checkpoint.

For Los Angeles, Derwin James is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and Rashawn Slater is on injured reserve following ankle surgery. Harbaugh said Monday that the Chargers would likely open tight end David Njoku's 21-day practice window and that Kayode Awosika should begin working back into practice. Donte Jackson and Rodney Shelley were expected to ramp up, Brenen Thompson was not likely to practice early in the week and Deane Leonard remained in concussion protocol.

The replacement consequences are direct. Without James, Los Angeles loses a flexible defender who can pressure, cover the slot or erase a tight end. If Njoku is activated, he can give Herbert a middle-of-field answer and red-zone body, but an opened practice window is not the same as an active game status. Houston must plan for both possibilities.

Stakes and recent form

Houston cannot afford to treat the Chargers' record as the argument. At 2-5, the Texans need to stack wins before the schedule removes the margin for recovery. Their bye gives them the preparation advantage, but it also raises the standard for procedural football: clean substitutions, a coherent opening script and answers for pressure should look sharper than they did before the break.

Los Angeles is playing for its first win and for evidence that the offense can support a defense that held the Rams to 3 of 11 on third down and 281 total yards. The Chargers generated only three points from four possessions that began at their own 40-yard line or better in that game. Converting short fields is the simplest path from competitive defense to a breakthrough win.

Fantasy football implications

Scoring format matters. In full PPR, Collins and Noel remain the most attractive Houston receiving options because volume and touchdown access can coexist in this matchup. Schultz is a viable tight end play if Houston uses play action and attacks the space created by Los Angeles' safety injuries. Stroud projects as a startable quarterback with a protected floor, though the likely game script may limit pure passing volume if Houston controls the second half.

Marks is a workload-based flex rather than a guaranteed efficiency play. On the Chargers side, McConkey carries the clearest receiving ceiling, but Herbert's interception and sack rates add downside to every passing option. Hampton's rushing role keeps him usable, while the rest of the backfield should be treated cautiously until the team clarifies its rotation. Njoku should not be placed into a fantasy lineup merely because his practice window may open; activation and role evidence come first.

Weather and market context

The five-day Inglewood forecast called for mostly sunny conditions with temperatures in the mid-80s around kickoff. Weather does not appear to be a material constraint at this stage, but the forecast should be checked again on game day. SoFi's covered environment also reduces the likelihood that ordinary wind or precipitation becomes the central variable.

The Chargers' official odds roundup, checked from prices posted Monday morning, listed Los Angeles at plus 4.5 at DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars and Bet365, plus 5 at BetMGM and Fanatics, with a total of 40.5 across the named books. These are time-stamped market observations, not a promise of availability. The football reading is that the market expects a modest Houston edge and a low-scoring game. Price sensitivity matters: Houston at minus 4.5 is materially different from a number that crosses six, and no market should replace an independent matchup assessment.

Official team context

Houston announced Monday that it signed defensive tackle Naquan Jones, added running back Joshua Pitsenberger to the practice squad, waived defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy and released running back Deuce Vaughn. The official Texans post below is embedded as roster context. The transaction does not by itself establish a major Week 9 role, but Jones gives the defensive interior another veteran option while the active roster and practice participation clarify usage.

Path for Houston

Protect Stroud on first and second down, make the Chargers defend the full intermediate field and accept a patient game if Los Angeles refuses explosive plays. On defense, squeeze the run without abandoning disguise, force Herbert to hold the ball and finish drives after any takeaway. Houston does not need to manufacture chaos. It needs to avoid giving the winless team the short fields and emotional surge that can change the game.

Path for Los Angeles

Win first down, keep Herbert out of long-yardage dropbacks and turn red-zone possessions into touchdowns rather than field goals. The defense must create at least one short field and prevent Houston from leaning on play action. If the Chargers can reach halftime within one score without a turnover, their defensive performance gives them a credible fourth-quarter path.

FN prediction

Football Nation prediction: Texans 24, Chargers 16. This is an opinion projection, not a reported result or betting guarantee. Houston's edge comes from the bye, Stroud's ball security and the Chargers' inability to turn viable field position into touchdowns. A modest Texans lead should let their pass rush and coverage disguise become more aggressive late.

Strongest counterargument

The strongest case against the pick is that Los Angeles' defense is better than the 0-7 record suggests. If the Chargers again limit third downs and total yardage, then one Houston protection mistake or special-teams swing could compress the game into a single possession. Houston has not been efficient enough on the ground to assume it can simply close the door, and a healthier Chargers receiving or tight end group could give Herbert the quick answers he has lacked.

Game day checkpoints

Check the final Week 9 injury reports for both teams, then verify Sunday inactives 90 minutes before kickoff. Confirm whether Njoku is activated and whether the Chargers commit to a lead back. Watch Houston's offensive line combination and the availability of Blankenship, Fisher, Montgomery, Pitre and Dell. Recheck the Inglewood forecast and any market movement, especially if the spread crosses a key number. On the first two Chargers possessions, track pressure rate, Herbert's time to throw and whether Los Angeles can produce a touchdown without needing a short field.
