D.J. Reed Hip Injury: Lions Week 9 D/ST and Fantasy Impact

Generic deep blue and silver No. 4 cornerback walking toward the sideline after a hip injury

Detroit cornerback D.J. Reed left Sunday’s 19 to 15 win over Minnesota in the fourth quarter with a hip injury, creating a significant Week 9 secondary question before the Lions visit the Miami Dolphins.

Detroit has not announced a diagnosis, recovery timetable or Week 9 game status. The useful fantasy approach is therefore to treat Reed as uncertain, rather than automatically out, until head coach Dan Campbell gives a medical update and the Lions release their first practice report.

What happened to D.J. Reed?

The Lions’ official recap says Reed suffered the hip injury on a key fourth down pass breakup in the fourth quarter. Before leaving, he had already delivered one of Detroit’s best defensive performances of the afternoon: the official NFL game log credits him with three passes defensed and an interception against Minnesota.

The injury came during a costly stretch for Detroit’s defense. Brian Branch and DJ Wonnum also exited, while linebacker Jack Campbell was taken to a hospital for evaluation of a neck injury. Those separate situations matter because Detroit may have to adjust several layers of its defense at once rather than replace only one cornerback.

Why Reed’s role matters

Reed is a starting outside corner and one of Detroit’s most productive tacklers. The Lions’ current team statistics list 42 total tackles, including 29 solo and 13 assisted, plus one interception. His ability to tackle on the perimeter is especially relevant against a Miami offense that uses quarterback mobility, running back touches and short passes to create yards after the catch.

Detroit’s official depth chart lists Khalil Dorsey directly behind Reed. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. starts at the other outside corner spot, with Rock Ya-Sin behind him, while Roger McCreary handles nickel duties. If Reed cannot play, Dorsey is the most direct replacement, but Ya-Sin or McCreary could also see their responsibilities expand depending on personnel package.

Lions D/ST fantasy impact for Week 9

Reed’s potential absence would lower Detroit’s coverage floor and takeaway ceiling, but it would not automatically make the Lions D/ST unplayable. The matchup remains favorable enough to monitor rather than abandon.

Miami’s official statistics list Malik Willis with 1,268 passing yards, six touchdown passes, five interceptions and a 79.68 passer rating. He has also rushed for 225 yards, so Detroit must account for scrambles even when the coverage holds. Miami’s leading receivers are Malik Washington with 329 yards, Greg Dulcich with 256 and Caleb Douglas with 226.

In ordinary fantasy leagues, Detroit remains a viable matchup based D/ST if Reed is the only late week concern. If Reed, Branch and other starters all miss practice, the combined attrition would make the Lions a more volatile streamer with less margin for coverage errors. Managers should compare Detroit with healthy defenses facing low volume or turnover prone quarterbacks before locking in a Week 9 starter.

Miami fantasy implications

  • Malik Willis: Reed’s absence would be a modest boost to Miami’s perimeter passing matchup, but Willis’ five interceptions and sub 80 passer rating keep him in the matchup dependent quarterback tier. His rushing production remains the stronger fantasy floor.

  • Malik Washington: As Miami’s current receiving yardage leader, Washington would be the clearest beneficiary if Detroit has to protect a backup outside corner or devote extra safety help to the boundary.

  • Caleb Douglas: Douglas’ 226 receiving yards and outside role make him a deeper league watch list option, not an automatic start. Reed’s status can improve the matchup without guaranteeing target volume.

  • Greg Dulcich: Reed’s injury has less direct impact on an interior tight end matchup. Dulcich’s value depends more on Willis’ target distribution and the availability of Detroit’s linebackers and safeties.

  • Ollie Gordon II and De’Von Achane: Detroit’s broader injury cluster could matter more to Miami’s running backs than Reed’s individual status. Monitor Jack Campbell and Detroit’s front seven practice participation separately.

IDP fantasy impact

Reed is most valuable in cornerback required or tackle heavy IDP leagues. His 42 tackles create a usable weekly floor, while his Week 8 interception and three pass breakups show the splash play upside. Managers with injured reserve flexibility should hold until Detroit provides a timetable. In shallow leagues without cornerback requirements, a healthy every down safety or linebacker is the safer replacement.

Dorsey is a speculative add only in very deep formats. A depth chart promotion does not guarantee Reed’s full snap share or target volume, and Detroit could distribute work among Dorsey, Ya-Sin and McCreary.

What fantasy managers should monitor

  • Monday: Dan Campbell’s postgame medical update and whether Reed needs additional testing.

  • Wednesday: Reed’s first Week 9 practice participation and any rehabilitation work on the side.

  • Thursday and Friday: whether he progresses from no participation to limited or full work.

  • Friday: Detroit’s final game designation and any practice squad elevation at cornerback.

  • Sunday morning: active/inactive status before Lions Dolphins kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on November 8.

Bottom line

Reed’s hip injury is a meaningful downgrade if it costs him Week 9, particularly because Detroit is already evaluating other defensive starters. For now, keep the Lions D/ST in the matchup based streamer tier, hold Reed in deeper IDP leagues, and treat Malik Washington as the Miami receiver with the clearest potential benefit. Do not assume Reed is out until Detroit’s practice reports establish his status.
