Ed Oliver Returns to Practice: Bills D/ST Impact vs. Ravens
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver returned to practice as a limited participant Wednesday after missing the past two games with a knee injury, giving Buffalo a meaningful but still incomplete reinforcement signal before Sunday’s Week 8 meeting with the Baltimore Ravens.
The immediate fantasy answer is measured: Oliver’s return improves the Bills’ path against Derrick Henry and a Ravens offense preparing for Lamar Jackson’s potential return, but limited participation is not the same as medical clearance or a promise of a normal snap count. Buffalo has not issued Oliver a final game designation.

What Buffalo confirmed Wednesday
The Bills’ official Week 8 report listed Oliver as limited because of his knee. Buffalo also said he went through individual drills in a normal practice jersey. Wide receiver DJ Moore, who has also missed the past two games, was limited in a red non-contact jersey, while receiver Tyrell Shavers opened his 21-day practice window and was limited.
Oliver had been inactive against the Rams and Raiders. Buffalo’s report therefore represents real progress from an absence, but Thursday and Friday participation will determine whether that progress is enough for Sunday. A full practice would be the strongest positive signal; another limited day would keep workload uncertainty alive; a nonparticipation would be a setback.
Why Oliver matters against Derrick Henry
Baltimore’s rushing offense is concentrated around Henry. The Ravens’ official statistics credit him with 147 carries for 579 yards and seven touchdowns through seven games. Lamar has added 144 rushing yards and one touchdown on 19 carries despite missing the past three games.
Oliver’s value is not limited to his own tackle or sack line. An explosive interior defender can compress inside gaps, make Henry change his track and prevent Baltimore’s line from creating clean combination blocks. That can help Buffalo’s linebackers arrive earlier and make the Ravens face longer third downs.
Buffalo has allowed 606 rushing yards on 158 attempts, a 3.8-yard average, according to the team’s official statistics. That baseline is encouraging, but Henry’s volume and Baltimore’s quarterback run threat create a different test. Oliver’s presence would give Buffalo another way to win the middle without committing an extra defender before the snap.
The Lamar Jackson complication
Baltimore listed Lamar as a full participant Wednesday after he missed three games with an ankle injury. He has not yet received a final Week 8 designation, but a full session is a stronger return signal than last week’s limited work.
Lamar has completed 68 of 96 passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns and one interception this season. His 10.1 yards per pass attempt and 7.6 yards per rush force a defense to defend both the pocket and the edge. Oliver can help collapse the pocket from the inside, but Buffalo cannot evaluate the matchup as a Henry-only rushing game if Lamar is active.
Bills D/ST fantasy impact
Fantasy framework: Bills D/ST analysis uses common scoring of one point per sack, two per takeaway and six per defensive touchdown, with points allowed tiers varying by platform. The Oliver recommendation assumes an IDP format with defensive tackle eligibility and league specific tackle and sack values. Advice for Derrick Henry and Baltimore pass catchers assumes half PPR scoring.
Buffalo D/ST remains a matchup-dependent starter rather than an automatic top-tier play. Oliver trending toward activation raises the unit’s floor against the run, and Greg Rousseau’s six sacks give the pass rush a proven finisher. The counterargument is Baltimore’s efficiency with Lamar: his low interception total and explosive rate reduce the easy-turnover ceiling fantasy managers want.
If Lamar is active and unrestricted, Buffalo D/ST belongs below the safest defenses facing lower-scoring offenses. If Lamar sits again, Buffalo becomes more attractive because Tyler Huntley has been efficient but has not matched Lamar’s explosive production. Oliver’s final status is a supporting factor; the Ravens’ quarterback decision remains the larger fantasy variable.
IDP and Ravens skill-player advice
Oliver is not an automatic IDP start after one limited practice. His 2026 line is nine combined tackles and half a sack in three games, and the Bills could manage his workload after consecutive absences. In defensive-tackle premium formats, he becomes a deeper option only if he finishes the week active without a reported snap restriction.
Henry remains an RB1 because his 147 carries and seven touchdowns create volume that one defender cannot erase. Oliver’s return would slightly strengthen the matchup resistance, not turn Henry into a bench candidate. Lamar remains a QB1 if active without restrictions. Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews and the other Ravens pass catchers should be evaluated primarily through Lamar’s availability, not Oliver’s status alone.
Week 8 schedule and next checkpoints
Baltimore visits Buffalo on Sunday, November 1 at noon Central on CBS. The Ravens are 4-3 and trying to stop a two-game losing streak, while the Bills enter 5-1 after their bye.
Fantasy managers should check Oliver’s Thursday participation, Friday’s final designation and Sunday’s inactive list. Because the game is in the early window, the final active list should arrive around 10:30 a.m. Central, leaving time to adjust Bills D/ST and deeper IDP decisions.
Football Nation conclusion: Oliver’s limited return is a positive development for Buffalo’s run defense, but it is not yet a green light for a full role. Keep Henry and Lamar in starting plans, treat Buffalo D/ST as opponent-sensitive, and wait for Friday before using Oliver in an IDP lineup.
