Archived pregame prediction for the Giants at the Rams on September 21, 2026. Los Angeles subsequently won 28 to 6. The original prediction and injury assumptions below describe information available before that Week 2 game.

The Los Angeles Rams are Football Nation’s pick to beat the New York Giants 24 to 21 on Monday night. New York arrives with the cleaner Week 1 result and the more efficient early offensive profile. Los Angeles, however, returns to SoFi Stadium with a defense that may add Aaron Donald, an offense that should not remain as inefficient on third down, and a veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford who was not sacked in the opener. The pick is narrow because Puka Nacua’s late week hip issue and the Giants’ secondary injuries remain unresolved.

Kickoff is Monday, September 21 at 7:15 p.m. Central on ESPN at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, according to the official NFL game center. The Giants are 1-0 after beating Dallas 28 to 20. The Rams are 0-1 after losing 27 to 7 to San Francisco in Melbourne.

The short answer

New York’s path is straightforward: keep Jaxson Dart ahead of the chains, force the Rams to defend both his legs and the middle of the field, and finish drives as efficiently as it did in Week 1. The Giants converted nine of eleven third downs and all four red-zone chances against Dallas. Those rates will fall over a larger sample, but they reveal a useful identity. Dart can extend plays, Cam Skattebo can punish light boxes, and Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers give him answers at different depths.

Los Angeles has the higher-variance path. The Rams gained 290 yards against the 49ers but produced only seven points, went two for nine on third down, and scored one touchdown in three red-zone trips. Those numbers are poor enough to demand a correction, not a panic button. Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes, the line allowed no sacks, and Puka Nacua still created a 41-yard gain. If the Rams turn ordinary possession downs into manageable third downs, this becomes a very different offense.

Verified Week 1 matchup

The table uses each team’s official Week 1 box-score totals. It is a one-game snapshot, not a season-long efficiency model. Neither team has a meaningful conventional home or road split yet: New York’s opener was at home, while Los Angeles was designated the home team for the international game in Melbourne.

For the complete New York opener, read the Giants’ 28 to 20 win over Dallas.

For the Los Angeles baseline, read the Rams’ 27 to 7 loss to San Francisco.

When the Giants have the ball

The central matchup is Dart’s movement against a Rams front that finished Week 1 without a sack. New York does not need to chase explosives on every series. It needs to preserve the rhythm that produced 29 first downs, 165 rushing yards and more than 36 minutes of possession against Dallas. Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, then added 54 rushing yards. That combination creates stress because the defense must account for an extra runner without abandoning its coverage structure.

Skattebo’s 81 rushing yards mattered for more than the box score. His success kept the Giants out of obvious passing situations and gave Dart clean play-action answers. Likely caught eight passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, while Nabers caught six of nine targets for 69 yards. The Rams can limit that grouping by squeezing the intermediate middle, rallying to tackle and making Dart throw from a stationary platform. If Donald returns, his interior disruption would be especially valuable because pressure up the middle can close escape lanes before Dart reaches the perimeter.

The latest Football Nation context on that decision is in the Rams defensive injury update.

ESPN reported that Sean McVay was hopeful Aaron Donald would play after a full Thursday practice. That is encouraging, but it is not the same as a final active designation.

When the Rams have the ball

The Rams should build the plan around Nacua’s leverage work and the run game, provided Nacua is cleared. He caught five passes for 74 yards on nine targets in Melbourne. Davante Adams added three catches for 26 yards, while Blake Corum and Kyren Williams combined for 95 rushing yards. The raw yardage was acceptable. The drive finishing was not. Los Angeles needs cleaner early-down completions, fewer empty red-zone possessions and a way to turn Nacua’s attention into space for Adams.

New York’s Week 1 defense allowed 20 points and created one interception but recorded no sack. That makes the availability of cornerbacks Paulson Adebo and Deonte Banks especially important. Both were listed as nonparticipants on the Friday practice report shown by the NFL game center. If either is limited or unavailable, Stafford should test the boundary and force the Giants to declare how much safety help they will use. If both play effectively, Los Angeles may have to win through longer drives and patient underneath throws.

The Rams’ own offensive uncertainty centers on Nacua. He missed Friday practice with a hip issue after appearing on the injury report. A missed practice does not determine game status, and the final Saturday report is the next important checkpoint. The prediction assumes he is available in some capacity. A doubtful or out designation would lower the Rams’ passing ceiling and could move the matchup toward New York.

Injury and availability checkpoint

The most important information is still coming. The final Saturday injury report will clarify Nacua, Adebo, Banks and Rams safety Kamren Kinchens, who did not participate Friday. Rams wide receiver Davante Adams was a full participant, while Kam Curl and Nate Landman participated. Giants defensive lineman Chauncey Golston and tackle Francis Mauigoa also participated. Those practice labels describe workload, not a guaranteed Monday role.

Football Nation’s live Week 2 injury tracker remains the best internal checkpoint as final designations arrive.

Fantasy football consequences

Dart belongs in the start conversation because his rushing creates a usable floor even if his third-down efficiency regresses. Nabers remains a featured receiver after nine opening-week targets, and Likely’s eight catches plus two red-zone scores make him difficult to bench. Skattebo has a credible workload, but the matchup becomes harder if Donald is active and moving normally.

For Los Angeles, Nacua is the swing player. If active without a reported limitation, his nine Week 1 targets and explosive-play role keep him in lineups. If he is limited, Adams gains target appeal but also draws more defensive attention. Corum and Williams remain touchdown-dependent unless the Rams improve on two successful third-down conversions and sustain more drives. Stafford is a matchup-based option rather than an automatic fantasy start until the offense shows it can finish possessions.

Football Nation prediction

Confirmed fact: New York owns the better record, the better Week 1 scoring profile and a dramatic early advantage on third down and in the red zone. Football Nation analysis: those conversion rates are unlikely to repeat, while Los Angeles has the offensive line stability and defensive reinforcement needed to make the game slower and tighter.

The Rams’ best formula is to keep Dart inside the pocket, make New York string together long drives, and let Stafford attack favorable matchups after the Giants reveal their coverage. The Giants can absolutely win if Dart again protects the ball and Nacua is unavailable or clearly limited. With the game at SoFi Stadium and Donald trending toward a return, the slightly stronger pick is on a Los Angeles response.

Prediction: Rams 24, Giants 21. The next checkpoint is Saturday’s final injury report, followed by Monday’s inactive list approximately 90 minutes before kickoff.
