49ers 27, Rams 7: Purdy and a Goal Line Stand Own Melbourne
Updated: Sep 20
Jake Tonges is out for the season
San Francisco’s postgame injury losses expanded Wednesday when Kyle Shanahan announced that tight end Jake Tonges underwent knee surgery and is out for the season.
The 49ers added veteran tight end Jack Stoll to the practice squad and promoted receiver KhaDarel Hodge. Tonges’ absence is a season-long depth and special-teams loss, separate from De’Zhaun Stribling’s approximately 10-week recovery.
Stribling’s surgery changes the 49ers’ recovery timeline
The postgame injury picture is now firmer: De’Zhaun Stribling underwent surgery for a deltoid rupture in his ankle. Kyle Shanahan said the expected absence is close to 10 weeks, moving the realistic target toward late November or early December.
Shanahan said Stribling’s return to the opener did not make the injury worse. San Francisco still has reason to expect him back this season, but the recovery is materially longer than the four-game injured-reserve minimum.
San Francisco scores the final 24 points as Brock Purdy throws three touchdowns and a 99 yard response buries the Rams in Australia.
2026 NFL Week 1 · Final: San Francisco 49ers 27, Los Angeles Rams 7. Official team coverage · AP game report
A historic stage, a ruthless finish
The NFL's first regular season game in Australia became a San Francisco demonstration in how to seize a game without a huge quarterback yardage total. Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, the 49ers ran for 174 yards, and Los Angeles never recovered from a sequence that paired a goal line stop with a touchdown drive covering almost the entire field. San Francisco won 27 to 7.
The Rams briefly led 7 to 3. The 49ers scored every point after that. This was not a shootout that happened to swing one way late. San Francisco gradually removed the Rams' options, extended possessions and turned a competitive opening into a comfortable finish at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

One yard became 99 yards
Los Angeles had a chance to change the game near the goal line, but Matthew Stafford was stopped on a fourth down sneak. San Francisco then answered with a 99 yard touchdown drive. The emotional cost of that sequence was enormous: the Rams came away empty from a scoring opportunity, then watched the 49ers convert the longest possible field into seven more points.
Purdy's touchdown passes went to Demarcus Robinson, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr. Robinson's 39 yard score supplied the first major passing strike. The diversity mattered. Los Angeles could not solve the game by taking away one receiver because San Francisco kept finding different ways to finish drives.

The control numbers tell the story
The 49ers converted seven of 12 third downs, while the Rams managed two of nine. San Francisco held the ball for 33:50 and generated 23 first downs to Los Angeles' 15. Neither team recorded a sack. The separation came through execution between the lines, ball security and the ability to keep an offensive series alive.
The Rams produced 122 rushing yards, so the ground game was not entirely absent. The problem was how little the passing offense added when the game demanded a response. Los Angeles finished with 168 net passing yards and one interception, while also losing a fumble. San Francisco's own interception did not become a pattern of self destruction.

Purdy distributed the damage
Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Evans caught six passes for 49 yards, Samuel caught six for 48, and Robinson turned two catches into 50 yards. The modest individual totals disguise a passing game that repeatedly found a useful answer.
Christian McCaffrey ran 10 times for 68 yards and caught five passes for 20. Kaelon Black carried 14 times for 65 yards. Those numbers deserve attention together: San Francisco gained 133 rushing yards from those two backs without needing either one to absorb an overwhelming workload. Stafford finished with 155 passing yards, no touchdowns and an interception before Stetson Bennett IV added 13 yards.

Fantasy takeaways beneath the final score
McCaffrey delivered 88 scrimmage yards, but Black's 14 carries are an important part of the backfield picture. One game's carry split does not establish a permanent arrangement. It does show why fantasy managers should track touches, receiving work and scoring opportunities separately.
Puka Nacua remained Los Angeles' most productive receiver with five catches for 74 yards on nine targets. Davante Adams had three catches for 26 on six targets. Kyren Williams scored the Rams' only touchdown, but Blake Corum led the team in rushing yards, 54 to 41. The disappointing team result should prompt a closer look at opportunity distribution rather than an automatic abandonment of every Rams skill player.

Stribling moves to injured reserve
The postgame injury uncertainty is now resolved at the roster level: Reuters reported on September 16 that San Francisco placed De’Zhaun Stribling on injured reserve. The rookie receiver must miss at least four games with the left-ankle deltoid sprain, is expected to return later this season and is still weighing whether surgery is necessary. KhaDarel Hodge was promoted from the practice squad.
That changes the Week 2 depth chart, not the final evaluation of this win. Stribling’s 21 offensive snaps remain part of the Melbourne story, but his immediate development window is paused. The complete Stribling injury canonical tracks the treatment uncertainty, while the Week 2 injury report should control any future availability claim.
Football Nation verdict
San Francisco won the snaps that sustain an offense and the snaps that protect a lead. Its 24 unanswered points reflected both sides of that equation. Los Angeles must turn useful early down gains into complete possessions and find a more forceful passing response. The 49ers host Miami next, while the Rams host the Giants. The Melbourne win gives San Francisco a strong opening statement; the Rams return with specific problems to repair. Football Nation’s Week 2 power rankings places the result in the leaguewide picture.
