Jets 17, Browns 12: Allen's Late Touchdown Rewards an Eight Sack Defense

The Jets beat Cleveland 17 to 12 on October 11 by turning a late special teams mistake into the game's decisive touchdown. Braelon Allen finished the winning possession with a 22 yard run, lifting New York to 2 and 3 and dropping the Browns to 3 and 2.

A short field changed the finish

Cleveland held a 12 to 10 lead when a mishandled punt snap gave New York the ball in scoring position. The Jets' defense had just forced a critical stop following a Geno Smith fumble. Allen then supplied the run that put New York ahead for good.

Pressure carried the defense

New York sacked Deshaun Watson eight times and held the Browns to 198 total yards. Rookie David Bailey accounted for three sacks. Cleveland struggled to maintain drives against that pressure, leaving a narrow advantage vulnerable to one major mistake.

Key performances

Allen ran 24 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Wilson caught seven passes for 104 yards, including the opening touchdown. Smith completed 17 of 30 passes for 182 yards as the Jets worked through a wet, uneven offensive afternoon.

Football Nation takeaway

Allen's 24 carries are the most useful fantasy signal, but he started in place of the injured Breece Hall. Check Hall's availability before assuming that workload will continue. Wilson also produced meaningful yardage in difficult conditions. For Cleveland, protection remains the concern: eight sacks disrupted too many possessions. New York won because its defense kept creating another opportunity.
