Joshua Karty Elevated vs. Chargers: Rams Kicker and Fantasy Impact

Factual cutoff, scoring basis and next checkpoint

Information checked October 31, 2026 at 3:40 p.m. CDT. Fantasy analysis uses standard kicker scoring: three points for field goals through 49 yards, four points from 50 through 59 yards, five points from 60 yards or more and one point per extra point. Football Nation opinion is labeled as such. The strongest counterargument is that Joshua Karty could remain an insurance option while Brandon McManus handles every kick. The next checkpoint is the Rams inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff, followed by the opening kickoff and first scoring opportunity.

The Los Angeles Rams added another layer to their unsettled kicking operation Saturday, elevating Joshua Karty and long snapper Jake McQuaide from the practice squad for Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Karty’s elevation makes him eligible for the 48 player game day roster, but it does not automatically make him the Rams’ field goal kicker. Brandon McManus remains listed first at kicker on the team’s depth chart and made all five of his extra point attempts in last week’s win over Las Vegas. The most likely immediate use for Karty is as a kickoff specialist or emergency alternative, a role head coach Sean McVay discussed during the week.

Why the Rams elevated Joshua Karty

Los Angeles signed Karty back to its practice squad on October 28 after cycling through several kickers. The Rams moved on from Harrison Mevis, then lost Blake Grupe to an injury in Week 6 before signing McManus. Karty gives the staff a familiar option who can handle kickoffs and, if needed, field goals and extra points.

Karty was the Rams’ sixth round pick in 2024. He made 85.3% of his field goal attempts as a rookie, but his rate fell to 66.7% through eight games in his second season before Los Angeles replaced him. Karty later said a hip issue affected him during that stretch. His return is a second opportunity, but Saturday’s elevation should be read as roster flexibility rather than proof he has reclaimed the full kicking job.

McQuaide’s elevation is more straightforward. Starting long snapper Joe Cardona is doubtful with an ankle injury, and McVay said Friday that Cardona’s status would put McQuaide in position to come up from the practice squad. A clean snap and hold operation matters for every kick, so the Rams are protecting the entire specialist unit, not merely creating a competition between Karty and McManus.

What Karty’s role could look like

The clearest division of labor would be Karty on kickoffs and McManus on field goals and extra points. McVay specifically cited Karty’s potential value on kickoffs when discussing whether he would be active. That setup would reduce McManus’ exposure to high volume kickoff work while preserving the veteran for scoring attempts.

Other possibilities remain. Karty could be active only as insurance, or the Rams could evaluate both kickers during pregame warmups before finalizing assignments. Because the team has not publicly named Karty the placekicker, fantasy managers should not assume the elevation transfers field goal attempts away from McManus.

The strongest counterargument is that carrying two kickers can signal genuine uncertainty. Los Angeles is already on its third primary kicker of the season, and Karty’s familiarity with the operation gives the coaching staff an alternative if McManus struggles. That makes Sunday’s usage important beyond one game, even if McManus retains the scoring role against the Chargers.

Fantasy football impact

  • Brandon McManus: He remains the only Rams kicker worth starting in standard fantasy leagues unless Los Angeles announces a change. The elevation adds role volatility, but the depth chart and McManus’ five successful extra points last week still favor him for scoring kicks.

  • Joshua Karty: Do not start Karty based on the elevation alone. He becomes relevant only if the Rams confirm he will handle field goals or if McManus is unexpectedly inactive. Deep dynasty and specialist formats can monitor him as a possible longer term competition.

  • Rams offense: The move does not change projections for Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams or Puka Nacua. It may improve kickoff execution and gives the team contingency protection, but offensive touchdown and yardage forecasts should remain unchanged.

  • Chargers D/ST and return game: A different kickoff specialist can affect touchback rate and field position at the margins. That is worth watching, but it is not a sufficient reason to change a fantasy defense ranking before the Rams disclose Karty’s actual role.

Matchup context for Rams Chargers

The Rams host the Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Pacific. Matthew Stafford enters the matchup with 1,989 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, while Kyren Williams has 492 rushing yards and six total touchdowns. That production gives the Rams’ kicker a useful scoring environment, but the value belongs to whichever specialist actually receives field goal and extra point attempts.

For fantasy managers, the practical rule is simple: treat McManus as the projected scorer until the Rams say otherwise. If Karty is active only for kickoffs, McManus’ fantasy role is largely intact. If Karty takes any placekicks during warmups or the game, both players become risky until the distribution is clear.

What to monitor before kickoff

First, check the official inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff. An active Karty confirms only that the Rams are carrying him for the game; it does not reveal his assignment. The decisive evidence will come from pregame warmups, sideline personnel and the first kickoff or scoring attempt.

Second, watch the snap and hold operation with McQuaide. A new long snapper can influence timing, and the Rams may prefer the kicker who looks most comfortable with that unit. Finally, monitor any postgame transaction: standard elevations normally revert to the practice squad, while a later active roster promotion would be a stronger signal of an ongoing competition.

Bottom line

Karty’s elevation is meaningful because it gives the Rams a familiar specialist during a turbulent season, but it is not a fantasy green light. McManus remains the best bet for field goals and extra points, Karty is most plausibly a kickoff option, and Sunday’s warmups and actual usage will determine whether Los Angeles has a real kicking competition.
