KaVontae Turpin Ruled Out With Rib Injury vs. Packers: Cowboys Return Game Takes Hit

Reporting cutoff: October 18, 2026 at 9:15 p.m. Central. The rib injury and out designation are official; no diagnosis, severity or return timetable had been announced at the cutoff.

Dallas Cowboys return specialist KaVontae Turpin was ruled out of Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers after suffering a rib injury on the opening kickoff at Lambeau Field. Turpin returned the kick to the Dallas 34-yard line, went to the locker room and was ruled out shortly afterward.

The immediate loss is larger on special teams than it is in the Cowboys’ normal passing rotation. Turpin entered Week 6 with an NFL-high 549 kickoff-return yards on 20 attempts, an average of 27.4 yards per return. He also had 100 yards on nine punt returns, an 11.1-yard average.

What happened to KaVontae Turpin

Green Bay’s official in-game report said Turpin handled the opening kickoff and then left for the locker room with the rib injury. The NFL’s Sunday injury roundup later listed him as ruled out. That is the full confirmed medical picture for now.

There is not yet public evidence establishing whether Turpin’s injury is a bruise, fracture or another rib-area issue. Those possibilities carry different timelines, so attaching a multiweek estimate before testing or a team update would be speculation.

Why the Cowboys feel this immediately

Turpin is one of the league’s most productive field-position players. His 20 kickoff returns had produced 549 yards before Sunday night, and 19 of those returns reached at least 20 yards. Removing that established explosiveness forces Dallas to redistribute both kickoff- and punt-return duties during the game.

That matters for an offense trying to avoid long fields. A replacement does not need to score to affect the game, but ball security, decision-making and hidden yardage become central. Dallas may use more than one player rather than assign every return to a single emergency replacement. The postgame participation report and next practice week should clarify the hierarchy.

Fantasy football impact

In standard season-long formats, Turpin’s injury should not cause a major waiver rush. Through five games he had four receptions for 39 yards and two carries for 10 yards, including one rushing touchdown. His offensive usage makes him a specialized play rather than a conventional weekly wide receiver.

The calculation changes in leagues that award individual return yards or return touchdowns. Turpin’s 549 kickoff-return yards and 100 punt-return yards gave him a meaningful scoring base in those formats. Managers who started him for return production should prepare an alternative for Week 7, but they should not drop him solely on the in-game out designation before Dallas provides a prognosis.

For fantasy platforms that score a team defense and special teams unit, the Cowboys’ return ceiling takes a hit if Turpin misses additional time. That is a modest tiebreaker, not a reason by itself to abandon the Dallas unit; sacks, takeaways, points allowed and the next matchup remain much larger inputs.

What to watch next

The first checkpoint is the Cowboys’ postgame media availability. The next useful evidence will be any imaging result, Monday treatment update and Turpin’s participation level when Dallas begins its Week 7 practice cycle. A return to practice would matter more than an unofficial estimate.

Managers should distinguish three separate questions: what the injury is, whether Turpin can play next week and whether he would resume his full return workload. Dallas can clear the first question without resolving the other two. Until the team provides more, Turpin should be treated as uncertain for Week 7 rather than automatically ruled out.

Football Nation outlook

Turpin’s rib injury removes Dallas’ best proven return threat for the rest of Sunday night and creates a legitimate field-position concern. The fantasy effect is narrow but real: return-yard leagues lose a high-volume specialist, while standard leagues see little direct change because his receiving workload was limited.

The disciplined move is to wait for the official postgame and practice updates before making a Week 7 roster decision. If Turpin is unavailable, Dallas’ replacement return plan will matter more to special teams projections than to the target shares of CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens or the other primary pass catchers.
