Luke Musgrave’s 2026 Return Is in Doubt: Packers TE and Fantasy Impact
The Green Bay Packers’ clearest update on Luke Musgrave is no longer a timetable. It is uncertainty. Head coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday that it is difficult to project whether the fourth-year tight end will play at all in 2026, while Green Bay’s current roster still lists Musgrave on reserve/physically unable to perform because of a neck injury.
That does not change the Packers’ Week 7 starting lineup, because Musgrave has not played this season. It does clarify the season-long plan for fantasy managers and for a Green Bay offense that has already built its tight end rotation around Tucker Kraft, Jonnu Smith, Mark Redman and Josh Whyle.
What changed with Luke Musgrave’s outlook
Musgrave went on reserve/PUP during the Packers’ August 30 roster reduction. General manager Brian Gutekunst said on September 1 that he expected Musgrave to play eventually but acknowledged the sensitivity of neck injuries and offered no timeline.
LaFleur’s October 22 update was more cautious. Asked whether Musgrave would play in 2026, he said it was tough to say and that, until shown otherwise, the answer would be no, while leaving the door open. Acme Packing Company reported the full exchange after Thursday’s pre-practice news conference.
The distinction matters: this is not a fresh game-status downgrade, and Musgrave does not appear on the normal Packers-Lions participation table because he remains on a reserve list. The official roster is the authoritative current-status check. A future return would first require a change in practice or reserve designation, followed by an active-roster transaction.
Packers tight end depth chart without Musgrave
Green Bay’s unofficial October 20 depth chart lists Kraft first, followed by Smith and Redman, with Whyle also in the group. That hierarchy has already been reflected in the receiving totals through six games:
Tucker Kraft: 25 receptions, 249 yards and one touchdown.
Jonnu Smith: five receptions, 85 yards and no touchdowns.
Mark Redman: two receptions, 29 yards and no touchdowns.
Luke Musgrave: no 2026 game appearances while on reserve/PUP.
Kraft has also caught at least five passes in each of the last three games, totaling 16 receptions for 143 yards and one touchdown in that stretch. Smith supplies veteran movement ability and explosive-play upside, while Redman and Whyle give Green Bay enough depth to keep multiple-tight-end personnel in the plan.
Fantasy football impact
The Musgrave update makes the fantasy hierarchy simpler, not more dramatic. Kraft remains the only Packers tight end who belongs in standard redraft starting lineups. His current volume and three-game reception floor support a weekly TE1 case, even though his one touchdown through six games has limited the ceiling.
Smith is a watch-list player in deeper formats, but five catches through six games is not enough standalone volume for a reliable start. Redman and Whyle are not redraft options unless the active depth chart changes. Musgrave should not occupy a normal redraft bench spot while he remains off the practice field; only deep dynasty managers with a free injured-reserve slot have a reason to hold.
This is also a reminder not to treat a possible late-season return as automatic target competition. Musgrave would need medical clearance, practice time and an offensive role before he could threaten Kraft’s fantasy usage. None of those steps has happened.
What it means for Packers vs. Lions in Week 7
Green Bay visits Detroit on Sunday, October 25, at 3:25 p.m. Central at Ford Field. Musgrave is not part of the Week 7 availability equation, so the immediate plan stays centered on Kraft as the primary receiving tight end and Smith as the movable veteran complement.
For fantasy managers, the Friday injury report remains important for active Packers such as Jordan Love, Matthew Golden and Christian Watson. It is not a Musgrave checkpoint unless the club first announces a practice or roster-status change. The Packers’ official roster and transactions page are the better sources for him.
The next meaningful checkpoint
A headline about optimism will not be enough. The next actionable development is an official transaction or a Packers announcement that Musgrave has been cleared to practice. Until then, the most useful working assumption is that Kraft’s role is secure and Musgrave is not available for 2026 fantasy lineups.
Information cutoff: October 23, 2026. Football Nation USA will update this story if Green Bay changes Musgrave’s reserve status or opens a practice window.
