Luke Schoonmaker Misses Practice With Groin Injury: Cowboys Week 8 Fantasy Impact
Dallas Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker did not practice Thursday because of a groin injury, a new addition after he was not listed on Wednesday's report. Dallas has not assigned him a Week 8 game status, so Friday's practice report is the next meaningful checkpoint before Sunday's home game against the Arizona Cardinals.
For fantasy managers, the headline is more important for Dallas' personnel plan than for target volume. Schoonmaker is not a normal season-long starter, and his absence would not automatically turn another Cowboys tight end into a high-volume waiver pickup.

What changed on Thursday
The official Cowboys injury report listed Schoonmaker as a nonparticipant Thursday with a groin injury. He had no Wednesday practice designation, which means the issue was newly disclosed during the week. The report did not list him as out, doubtful or questionable as of Thursday night.
A Thursday downgrade deserves monitoring, but it is not proof of a severe injury. Teams sometimes hold players out after a midweek issue for precautionary treatment. The direction of Friday's participation—and the final game designation—will be more informative than one missed practice.
Cowboys tight end depth chart and production
Dallas' official depth chart lists Jake Ferguson and Brevyn Spann-Ford ahead of Schoonmaker. Spann-Ford established himself as the No. 2 option during training camp, while Schoonmaker has operated in a smaller third-tight-end role.
The Cowboys' 2026 team statistics reinforce that hierarchy. Ferguson has 17 catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Spann-Ford has nine receptions for 79 yards, while Schoonmaker has three catches for 30 yards and no touchdown in five appearances.
Those numbers matter because an injury replacement does not inherit an absent player's fantasy value in a vacuum. Schoonmaker has handled little receiving volume, so there is not a meaningful target share waiting to be redistributed.
Week 8 fantasy football impact
Jake Ferguson remains a touchdown-dependent TE1/TE2 option. Schoonmaker's status could increase Ferguson's snap security in multi-tight-end packages, but the existing production split does not support projecting a major target spike.
Brevyn Spann-Ford is the direct depth-chart beneficiary if Schoonmaker is inactive. His nine catches show more involvement than Schoonmaker, but he is still a deep-league or DFS contingency—not a standard waiver priority.
Schoonmaker belongs on fantasy benches and waiver wires in ordinary redraft formats. Managers in very deep tight-end-premium leagues can wait for Friday's report before making a roster decision.
Dallas pass-catchers should not be downgraded because of this injury alone. Any effect is more likely to appear in blocking assignments and personnel usage than in the core target tree.
What it could change for Cowboys-Cardinals
If Schoonmaker cannot play, Dallas can elevate Spann-Ford's workload and use Ferguson for more of the move-tight-end snaps. The offense could also lean slightly more on three-receiver formations when it wants to spread the field, depending on the health of the rest of the receiving corps.
Spann-Ford's blocking value is central to that plan. The Cowboys described him as one of their best in-line blockers when announcing his contract extension through 2029 in September. That makes him the logical replacement for the snaps Schoonmaker would leave behind, even if those snaps do not produce many fantasy points.
Strongest counterargument
Schoonmaker’s Thursday absence may prove brief, and even an inactive designation would remove only three receptions and 30 receiving yards from Dallas’ current season totals. Ferguson and Spann Ford already lead the depth chart, so the offense may preserve its usual tight end structure without a meaningful fantasy target shift.
The Friday checklist
Full or limited practice: Schoonmaker would be trending toward availability, with no fantasy lineup change required.
Another DNP with a questionable tag: expect Spann-Ford to absorb the clearest role increase, but keep him outside normal redraft lineups.
Ruled out or doubtful: Dallas' two-tight-end packages remain viable because Ferguson and Spann-Ford are already the top two options.
Pregame setback: monitor the official inactive list Sunday, but do not chase a third Cowboys tight end in fantasy.
Bottom line: the new groin injury is worth tracking because it appeared midweek, yet it does not create a major fantasy opportunity. Ferguson remains the only Dallas tight end with routine starting consideration, and Spann-Ford is the next man up if Schoonmaker cannot face Arizona.
