Jonathan Bullard Returns to Practice: Cowboys D/ST Week 8 Impact

An anonymous veteran interior defensive lineman walks onto a professional practice field in a plain navy jersey and silver pants.

Facts checked October 29, 2026 at 5:13 PM CDT. Dallas had opened Jonathan Bullard’s 21 day practice window, but he remained on injured reserve and had not been activated to the 53 man roster. Arizona’s official Week 8 injury report and team statistics were current at this cutoff.

Fantasy scoring assumptions: the team defense discussion uses common formats that award sacks, takeaways, defensive touchdowns and points allowed. The IDP note assumes one point per solo tackle, half a point per assisted tackle and two points per sack. Adjust the recommendation for your league’s scoring.

Jonathan Bullard is back on the practice field, but the most important word for fantasy managers is not “back.” It is “eligible.” The Dallas Cowboys opened the defensive tackle’s 21-day practice window on October 29. Bullard can practice during that window, yet he remains on injured reserve until Dallas makes a separate move to the 53-man roster.

That procedural detail keeps this from being a confirmed Week 8 return. It is still a meaningful step for a Dallas front preparing to host Arizona on Sunday, November 1 at noon CT.

What changed for Jonathan Bullard

Bullard played in Dallas’ first three games before suffering an injury in the Week 3 loss to Baltimore in Rio. The Cowboys placed him on injured reserve on September 30. In those three appearances, the 33-year-old recorded three tackles and half a sack.

The Cowboys’ current roster lists the 6-foot-3, 290-pound veteran as Reserve/Designated to Return. Dallas has also opened return windows for linebacker Marist Liufau and safety P.J. Locke, so every activation decision has to account for both roster space and the club’s eight-return designation limit.

The Week 8 activation checklist

Bullard has cleared the first administrative hurdle, not the last one. Before treating him as available against Arizona, watch for three confirmations:

  • A transaction moving Bullard from injured reserve to the 53-man roster.

  • Friday’s practice participation and any coach comments about conditioning or a snap limit.

  • Sunday’s inactive list, released roughly 90 minutes before kickoff.

If Dallas does not activate him this week, the 21-day window still gives the club time to evaluate him. Failure to activate him by the end of that period would end his season.

Cowboys D/ST impact: helpful depth, not a lineup-changing return

Bullard is an experienced early-down interior defender, but his pre-injury production points to a rotational role rather than a high-volume pass-rush assignment. His potential return would give Dallas another sturdy body for run downs and could help keep the interior rotation fresher.

That matters because Dallas is trying to build on a recent defensive uptick. The Cowboys entered the week with 10 sacks, six of them over the previous three games, according to the team’s Week 8 matchup preview. Still, Bullard’s half-sack in three games is not enough to make his activation a standalone reason to start the Cowboys D/ST.

The stronger fantasy case for Dallas comes from the matchup, game script and the unit’s broader improvement—not from one rotational tackle. Bullard would be a modest stabilizer for the floor, especially if he can help on early downs and create longer third-down situations.

Arizona backfield impact

Arizona’s rushing plan remains unsettled. Rookie Jeremiyah Love returned to limited practice Wednesday after missing two games, while Tyler Allgeier did not practice because of a toe injury. Through seven games, Love leads the Cardinals with 245 rushing yards; Allgeier has 176 and Bam Knight has 160, according to Arizona’s official team statistics.

If Bullard is activated, his presence would be a small negative for Arizona’s interior rushing efficiency. It would not erase the volume appeal of whichever backs are active. Fantasy managers should prioritize Friday’s injury designations and the Sunday inactive list over this defensive transaction when deciding among Love, Allgeier and Knight.

IDP fantasy football outlook

Bullard is not a recommended IDP add in standard formats. He averaged one tackle per game before the injury, and a return from injured reserve often comes with a managed workload. He is more relevant in deep defensive-tackle-required leagues, where even 20 to 30 rotational snaps can have value.

Managers in those formats should wait for activation confirmation. If he is active, treat him as a low-floor depth play rather than an immediate starter. His return could slightly reduce the early-down snaps of other Dallas interior linemen, but the exact rotation will not be clear until the Cowboys play a game with the full group available.

Football Nation view and strongest counterargument

Football Nation view: Bullard is useful interior depth, but his possible return does not by itself turn Dallas into an automatic fantasy start. His early season role and production point to a supporting assignment. The strongest counterargument is that a quick activation could improve early down rotation quality and help the Cowboys keep pass rushers fresher against an Arizona backfield dealing with injuries. That team effect could matter more than Bullard’s individual box score.

Bottom line

Bullard’s return to practice is positive news for Dallas, but it is not the same as a return to the lineup. For Week 8, the practical fantasy takeaway is modest: the Cowboys D/ST gets a little more appealing if Bullard is activated, while Arizona’s backs face a slightly deeper interior rotation. The decisive updates will be the 53-man roster move, Friday’s practice information and Sunday’s inactive list.
