Michael Pittman Jr. Is Running Again: Steelers' Post Bye Receiver Plan

Michael Pittman Jr. has started running again during Pittsburgh's Week 9 bye, but the Steelers have not opened a 21 day practice window or set a return date. Pittman told Steelers.com he would like to return after the bye, then immediately added that he cannot play until he is effective. That distinction is the actionable part for fans and fantasy managers: Week 10 is a target, not a promise.

What Pittsburgh has confirmed

Pittman has missed four games on the Reserve Injured list with the foot issue. In Pittsburgh's official Nov. 2 update, he said he has been running since last week and is progressing from treadmill work to flat ground and cleats. He also said there is no timetable. Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio said Pittman has remained in meetings and involved in the game plan while the medical staff manages the return.

The comparison period matters. Pittman started three games before the setback and caught seven passes for 89 yards, a 12.7 yard average, with no touchdowns. Pittsburgh is 6 and 2 entering its Week 9 bye and next plays at Cincinnati on Nov. 15. A healthy return would help the stretch run, but the club has not announced that Pittman is ready for practice, activation or game action.

What a return would change for the Steelers

Pittman's early production was modest, yet his role is larger than seven catches. At 6 foot 4, he can give Aaron Rodgers a bigger boundary and intermediate target, occupy physical corners and stay on the field across personnel packages. That can help Pittsburgh build more complete three receiver groupings instead of asking one reserve to duplicate every part of his job.

The current offense has not stopped developing without him. Through eight games, Pittsburgh's official statistics list DK Metcalf with 33 catches for 378 yards and Germie Bernard with 32 catches for 284 yards. Bernard has earned a real role rather than merely borrowing snaps. Pittman's return should therefore be viewed as another option for a 6 and 2 team, not an automatic target takeover.

The best football outcome is functional depth. Pittman can work the possession and contested areas, Metcalf can threaten coverage outside, and Bernard can keep the motion and underneath game moving. Pittsburgh can also continue leaning on its run game instead of forcing receiver volume simply because a veteran becomes available.

Fantasy football impact in half PPR leagues

Michael Pittman Jr.: Keep him in an injured reserve slot where available, but do not put him into a Week 10 lineup based only on his stated goal. Fantasy managers need an official practice designation, activation and evidence that he can handle a normal route load.

DK Metcalf: He remains Pittsburgh's highest ceiling fantasy receiver. Pittman's eventual return could reduce defensive attention on some concepts, but it would also add competition for intermediate and red zone targets. Treat Metcalf as a volatile WR2 or flex, not a guaranteed volume spike.

Germie Bernard: His 32 catches and 284 yards have established independent value. He remains the clearest Steelers receiver to monitor behind Metcalf, although his weekly target floor could soften once Pittman is truly active. In deeper formats, Bernard is a hold through the bye rather than an automatic sell.

Aaron Rodgers: The update is mildly positive for his supporting cast, not an immediate ranking change. Rodgers remains a matchup based QB2 until Pittman practices and the offense shows how the receiver rotation will be divided.

The strongest reason for caution

This is the same foot problem that interrupted Pittman's season earlier. He missed Week 2, returned for three starts, then aggravated the issue and went to injured reserve on Oct. 10. Running is meaningful progress, but it is not the same as cutting, absorbing contact or completing a full practice. Pittman himself supplied the most responsible counterargument when he said he cannot return unless he is effective.

The ProFootballTalk X status below captures the earlier stage of this same injury, when Pittman was expected to play in Week 3. That earlier optimism was accurate for that game, but the later flare up is exactly why the current post bye target should not be presented as a clearance.

The next checkpoint

Watch Pittsburgh's official transaction log and first post bye practice report. A designation to return would open a 21 day practice window, but even that step would not guarantee immediate activation. The useful sequence is practice designation, participation level, activation, then game day route share. Skipping any of those steps would turn a reasonable projection into guesswork.

Football Nation bottom line

Pittman's running progression is the best update Pittsburgh has offered since the injured reserve move, but it does not create a start date. The Steelers can use the bye to evaluate his foot without sacrificing a game, while Metcalf and Bernard keep their established roles. For fantasy managers, the correct move is patience: stash Pittman, hold Bernard in deeper formats and wait for practice participation before projecting a post bye target split.
