Panthers Activate Bam Martin-Scott, Place Thomas Incoom on IR
The Carolina Panthers activated linebacker Bam Martin-Scott from injured reserve on Saturday and placed outside linebacker Thomas Incoom on injured reserve, reshaping their special-teams and edge depth before Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Carolina said Incoom suffered a calf injury against Philadelphia in Week 6. His move to injured reserve requires him to miss at least four games. Martin-Scott, meanwhile, returned from the preseason hamstring injury that had kept him on injured reserve since the initial roster cutdown.
Why Martin-Scott’s return matters
Martin-Scott practiced during the week and no longer carries a game designation. The former South Carolina linebacker appeared in all 17 games for Carolina last season, and the team specifically noted that he can handle most of the special-teams jobs Incoom performed.
That is the clearest immediate role projection. Martin-Scott gives the Panthers an experienced coverage-unit option without requiring Carolina to overhaul multiple special-teams groups on game day. He can also provide emergency linebacker depth, but the activation should not automatically be read as a promise of a large defensive snap count.
Panthers also add edge and secondary depth
Carolina used its two standard practice-squad elevations on outside linebacker Nick Hampton and cornerback Robert Rochell. Hampton’s elevation is especially relevant because starting edge defender Jaelan Phillips is out with a hamstring injury while Incoom moves to injured reserve.
Hampton is available to supplement the edge rotation against Tampa Bay. This is his first standard elevation of the season. Rochell is being elevated for the third time, which means Carolina would need to sign him to the 53-man roster if it wants him available for another game after Sunday without first exposing him to the normal roster process.
Fantasy and IDP impact
Martin-Scott should remain out of standard fantasy lineups. His expected value is concentrated on special teams, and there is not yet evidence of a full-time defensive role. Even in IDP formats, he is a watch-list player rather than an immediate start.
Hampton carries slightly more short-term IDP intrigue because Carolina is missing two outside linebackers, but his likely rotational role still makes him a speculative option limited to very deep formats. Managers should wait for Sunday’s snap share, pass-rush usage and tackle production before treating him as a waiver target.
What to watch against Tampa Bay
The Panthers’ roster moves preserve their core special-teams structure while giving the defense another available edge player. The key game-day questions are how often Hampton rotates into the front, whether Martin-Scott receives any defensive work beyond special teams and how Carolina manufactures pressure without Phillips.
For future roster planning, Incoom cannot return until he has missed at least four games. Martin-Scott now occupies the active-roster spot, while Rochell’s third elevation creates a separate decision for Carolina before the next game in which it wants him available.
