Poona Ford Out for Season; Kobie Turner to IR as Rams Front Thins

The Los Angeles Rams have lost two major interior defenders at the same time. Head coach Sean McVay said Poona Ford will miss the rest of the 2026 season after rupturing his triceps, while Kobie Turner is headed to injured reserve with a groin injury and must miss at least four games. Those are separate from the Rams' Davante Adams and Blake Grupe injuries and create an immediate problem for a 2 and 4 team trying to stabilize its season.

What the Rams confirmed

Ford's ruptured triceps ends his season. Turner will go to injured reserve, establishing a minimum four game absence even if his recovery moves quickly. McVay also said edge rusher Myles Garrett, who has been on injured reserve since knee surgery following Week 1, will not begin practicing this week. Los Angeles therefore enters its Week 7 preparation without three important front seven pieces available to solve the same problem.

The timeline matters. Ford has no remaining 2026 return window under the announced diagnosis. Turner can become eligible after four games, but injured reserve eligibility is not a recovery guarantee. The Rams have not announced a precise activation date. Garrett's absence from practice this week means the defense cannot assume his return against Las Vegas either.

Why Turner's absence is especially costly

Turner has been one of the Rams' most reliable run defenders. The team's official October 9 analysis reported that he made tackles on 25.4 percent of his run defense snaps through the measured period, 16 tackles on 63 snaps. That ranked sixth among NFL defenders with at least 50 run defense snaps. The same report credited him with 16 run defense tackles without a missed tackle, the most among defensive tackles and tied for fifth among all defenders.

Those numbers help explain why his loss cannot be reduced to a depth chart transaction. Turner has aligned across the front, absorbed combination blocks, closed rushing lanes and allowed teammates to finish plays. His absence removes both production and structural reliability. A replacement can take his snaps, but replacing his consistency and ability to play every down is a more difficult assignment.

Ford's role and the combined effect

Ford gave the Rams a physical interior presence who could occupy blockers and help keep the second level clean. Losing him for the season at the same moment Turner leaves the lineup changes how Los Angeles can rotate its defensive tackles. It can also force healthy linemen to play longer stretches, increasing fatigue and making it harder to maintain the same run fits late in games.

The combined loss is more damaging than either injury in isolation. Offenses can test the interior early, use heavier personnel and force the Rams to prove their replacement group can withstand repeated runs. If Los Angeles must devote extra resources to the box, the adjustment can influence coverage calls and play action defense. That does not guarantee a defensive collapse, but it creates a clear pressure point.

Who must absorb the work

NFL.com's breakdown identified Aaron Donald and Braden Fiske as the primary players facing heavier responsibility, with Tyler Davis and Larrell Murchison candidates for larger roles. The Rams may also add another defensive lineman or elevate help from the practice squad. Any roster addition should be judged as depth support unless the team immediately assigns a major snap share.

Donald and Fiske can still give Los Angeles disruptive interior play, but the rotation around them is thinner. The coaching staff now has to balance its best available front with the need to keep players fresh for fourth quarter possessions. That decision becomes especially important if the offense struggles to sustain drives and the defense faces a high play count.

Week 7 and fantasy consequences

The Rams face Las Vegas in Week 7, and the Rams at Raiders matchup guide now needs to account for a materially weakened defensive interior. The clearest opponent adjustment is greater willingness to test the Rams on the ground and through play action. Los Angeles can counter with movement, early down pressure and tighter run support, but those solutions can create tradeoffs elsewhere.

For fantasy defense purposes, the injuries are a reason to lower confidence in the Rams as an automatic start, especially against offenses capable of staying committed to the run. They do not make every opposing runner a must start by themselves. Personnel usage, offensive line health, scoring environment and game script still matter. The correct conclusion is a downgrade to the defensive baseline, not a guarantee of a specific box score.

Separate from the Adams and Grupe stories

Football Nation has separate canonical coverage of Davante Adams' six to 10 week hamstring absence and Blake Grupe's injured reserve move. Ford and Turner affect a different side of the ball and require their own analysis. The Week 6 loss to Arizona is also preserved in the Cardinals at Rams recap.

Next checkpoint

The next concrete evidence will be the official Turner transaction, any corresponding roster addition and the Rams' first Week 7 practice report. Snap distribution among Donald, Fiske, Davis and Murchison will show how the coaching staff plans to rebuild the rotation. Garrett's practice status remains a later checkpoint rather than an assumed solution.

Football Nation conclusion

Los Angeles did not merely lose two names from the same position group. It lost a season long interior anchor in Ford and one of its most dependable every down run defenders in Turner while Garrett remains unavailable. The Rams still have high end talent on the front, but their margin for error has narrowed sharply. Until the replacement rotation proves it can hold up, opponents have a rational reason to attack the middle and extend drives.
