Ravens QB Emergency Plan: Joe Fagnano, Austin Reed and Week 9 Fantasy Impact

Baltimore began its short Week 9 turnaround without a fully healthy quarterback on the 53 man roster. Lamar Jackson is headed to injured reserve with a right thumb injury. Tyler Huntley is dealing with a toe injury and Head Coach Jesse Minter said Monday that Huntley probably will not play Thursday. Joe Fagnano, who was injured on a low hit in Buffalo, was listed as an estimated limited participant but has the best current chance to face Jacksonville. The Ravens also brought Austin Reed back to the practice squad.

Joe Fagnano is the current front runner, not a confirmed starter

Minter stopped short of naming a starter Monday. He said Fagnano was fighting through multiple issues but expected the rookie to have a chance to play. Fagnano completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards with no touchdowns, one interception and a lost fumble in his NFL debut against Buffalo. He was sacked three times for 15 yards and finished with a 40.0 passer rating.

That debut came with almost no preparation as the lead quarterback. Jackson left after one pass, Huntley followed with a toe injury in the second quarter and Fagnano was forced into a game Baltimore already struggled to control. A full week would normally help a young quarterback, but the Thursday schedule gives the Ravens only walkthroughs and a compressed installation period.

The verified Ravens account shared Minter's Huntley update in the public X post above. The actual status at https://x.com/Ravens/status/2117400476002243067 was opened and checked November 2, 2026 at 9:06 p.m. Central.

Austin Reed gives Baltimore familiarity, not certainty

Baltimore signed Reed to the practice squad Monday and waived fullback Lucas Scott. Reed spent part of Ravens training camp and played in all three preseason games, completing six of 12 passes for 59 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also scored on a 14 yard run. Reed previously worked in offensive coordinator Declan Doyle's system in Chicago, which reduces the amount of terminology he must learn before Thursday.

The limitation is obvious: Reed has not played a regular season NFL snap. If Fagnano cannot go, the Ravens would be choosing between an injured Huntley and a practice squad quarterback who rejoined the team three days before the game. Reed's familiarity makes him a more functional emergency option, but it does not make the offense equivalent to the Jackson or Huntley version.

The game plan should move through Derrick Henry

Baltimore's safest plan is to reduce the number of long dropbacks. Derrick Henry has 632 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 158 carries through eight games. Justice Hill has averaged 6.5 yards on 24 carries and can support quick throws and change of pace runs, although Hill was also limited Monday with a groin injury.

The Ravens should use heavier personnel, play action from under center, moving pockets and defined first reads. The goal is not to ask Fagnano or Reed to recreate Jackson's movement. It is to create manageable third downs, protect the football and prevent Jacksonville from attacking an obvious passing script. Baltimore had only 144 total yards in Buffalo and allowed four sacks and 12 quarterback hits, so protection must improve regardless of who starts.

Fantasy football consequences

In standard fantasy formats, Henry remains the most trustworthy Raven because his workload and goal line role should grow if Baltimore plays conservatively. His touchdown probability is less secure if the offense cannot sustain drives, but managers should not bench a back with his volume solely because of the quarterback uncertainty.

Zay Flowers moves into riskier wide receiver territory after being held without a catch in Buffalo for the first time in his career. Flowers should remain rostered, but managers with comparable options should wait for the final quarterback and offensive line statuses before locking him into a lineup. Mark Andrews also carries more volatility because a young quarterback can lean on short middle throws, but fewer scoring opportunities lower the touchdown ceiling.

Jackson belongs in injured reserve slots where available. Huntley is a hold only in deeper superflex or two quarterback leagues until the toe timeline is clearer. Fagnano and Reed are emergency superflex considerations, not standard one quarterback starters. Jacksonville D/ST becomes a stronger streaming option if Baltimore starts Fagnano or Reed behind a line that allowed consistent pressure in Week 8.

The strongest uncertainty

The starting quarterback is not the only unresolved variable. Fagnano's own injury could worsen during the short week, Huntley's toe could respond better than expected and Reed could be elevated as insurance without actually playing. Baltimore also listed multiple offensive linemen as limited, including Roger Rosengarten, John Simpson and Ronnie Stanley. The protection group may matter as much as the quarterback choice.

There is also a counterargument to assuming another Buffalo level performance. Fagnano will receive the starter's walkthrough repetitions, the Ravens are returning home and Reed already knows part of the offensive language. A simplified plan built around Henry can be more efficient than the improvised offense that took the field after two in game quarterback injuries.

Next checkpoint

Tuesday and Wednesday participation estimates, followed by Baltimore's final game statuses, are the next actionable checkpoints. Managers should watch Fagnano, Huntley, Hill and the offensive tackles. The final quarterback decision will determine whether Flowers and Andrews remain aggressive starts or become matchup dependent plays.
