Saints 34, Giants 27: Shough Builds Lead Before New York Rally Falls Short

The result and what it means

The New Orleans Saints beat the New York Giants 34 to 27 on October 18, 2026 at MetLife Stadium. New Orleans moved to 2 and 4. New York fell to 3, 2 and 1. The Saints turned a 10 to 0 deficit into a 34 to 10 lead, then survived 17 unanswered Giants points in the fourth quarter.

Football Nation conclusion: New Orleans won the turnover battle and paired that advantage with Tyler Shough's most efficient scoring performance of the season. The Giants produced 461 yards, 142 more than the Saints, but four giveaways and an empty final possession erased the yardage edge.

How the game turned

New York led 7 to 0 after the first quarter and 10 to 0 before New Orleans settled. Charlie Jones then lost a fumble, and the Saints used the change in momentum to start their comeback. New Orleans made a 58 yard field goal and Bryce Lance scored on a two yard run to tie the game at 10 before halftime.

New Orleans controlled the third quarter. Shough hit Alvin Kamara for a 31 yard touchdown, then scored himself on a one yard run. New Orleans added a 51 yard field goal for a 27 to 10 lead. Early in the fourth, Shough found Chris Olave for an 18 yard touchdown and the margin reached 34 to 10.

The Giants did not fold. Tyrone Tracy Jr. scored, J.J. McCarthy hit Isaiah Likely for a touchdown and Jake Zvada added a field goal. New York had one more chance at 34 to 27, but its fourth down pass fell incomplete. The Saints had absorbed the rally without surrendering the result.

Quarterback and turnover picture

Shough completed 16 of 30 passes for 144 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran five times for 32 yards and the short touchdown. His box score was not driven by empty volume. New Orleans asked him to finish scoring opportunities and avoid the mistake that would reopen the game.

The Giants used two quarterbacks. Jameis Winston completed 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. McCarthy completed 11 of 21 for 243 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The combined passing yardage explains the 461 total yards. The three interceptions explain why that production did not become a win.

New Orleans also sacked Winston four times. The Saints finished with 319 total yards and possessed the ball for 31 minutes and two seconds. The Giants held the explosive yardage advantage, but New Orleans owned the high value events: takeaways, short scoring chances and a clean quarterback turnover column.

Skill player consequences

Kendre Miller carried 20 times for 70 yards. Kamara added 34 rushing yards and caught two passes for 35 yards, including the 31 yard touchdown. Olave caught four passes for 43 yards and a score. New Orleans did not need one receiver to dominate because the defense repeatedly shortened the task.

Malik Nabers was the Giants' most productive target with 12 catches for 165 yards. Likely added six catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Those lines are meaningful, but the offense needed too many possessions to overcome its giveaways.

Fantasy football consequence

Fantasy guidance uses half point PPR scoring. Nabers remains an automatic start because 12 receptions and 165 yards survived the quarterback rotation. Likely moves into the stronger tight end starter tier if his route participation matches the receiving total in the official gamebook.

Shough becomes a viable streamer in favorable matchups because of his rushing contribution and three passing touchdowns. Miller's 20 carries make him a waiver priority where available. Kamara remains a start, but the split workload means fantasy managers should value receiving and touchdown access rather than assume a return to every down rushing volume. Olave's touchdown helps, though four catches and 43 yards still leave weekly volume questions.

Strongest counterargument and next checkpoint

The strongest counterargument to a broad Saints revival is the fourth quarter. New Orleans allowed 17 straight points and gave the Giants a final possession with a chance to tie. A cleaner opponent may finish that comeback. The Saints must show they can close without retreating into passive offense.

The next checkpoint is the Giants' quarterback plan. McCarthy powered the rally after Winston's turnover heavy stretch, but role certainty must come from the team. For New Orleans, the next practice reports and the official snap counts will show whether Miller's 20 carries represent a lasting workload shift.
