Saints Elevate Easton Kilty With Cesar Ruiz Questionable vs. Steelers

The New Orleans Saints have elevated offensive tackle Easton Kilty from the practice squad for Sunday's Week 7 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The move gives New Orleans another flexible blocker while starting right guard Cesar Ruiz carries a questionable designation because of a knee injury.

Kilty's elevation was confirmed Saturday by the Saints' official transaction announcement. It is his second standard elevation of the season after he appeared against Minnesota in Week 5.

Why Kilty's elevation matters

This is primarily an offensive-line insurance move, not a signal that Kilty will start. Ruiz did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, returned on a limited basis Friday and is officially questionable. The Saints' final injury report also lists Asim Richards as a full participant after a hand issue.

Rookie Jeremiah Wright stepped in when Ruiz left last week's win over the Giants. If Ruiz cannot go in Paris, Wright remains the most logical replacement at right guard, with Kilty adding emergency depth across multiple spots. Kilty worked at tackle in college and discussed practicing at center during training camp, which gives New Orleans useful game-day flexibility with limited active-roster space.

The team's own Week 7 matchup analysis says the Saints produced a season-high 175 rushing yards on 38 carries against New York, including some of that work after Ruiz exited. New Orleans now faces a Pittsburgh defense with 16 sacks, making continuity and contingency planning especially important.

What Kilty brings

The Saints' official player profile lists Kilty at 6-foot-6 and 307 pounds. The 24-year-old has played in one NFL game this season and has not started.

His college résumé is considerably deeper. Kilty appeared in 51 games with 50 starts across North Dakota and Kansas State. He started all 13 games at left tackle for Kansas State in 2024 and earned second-team All-Big 12 recognition from the conference's coaches.

That Kansas State line helped the Wildcats average a school-record 6.08 yards per rush and allowed only 13 sacks. Earlier in his career, Kilty also started at right tackle and both guard spots. The broader résumé explains why New Orleans views him as more than a one-position reserve.

The Saints also highlighted Kilty's training-camp work at center. That does not automatically make him the first interior substitute Sunday, but it raises the number of lineup combinations the staff can manage if another injury occurs.

Game-day lineup scenarios

If Ruiz is active: New Orleans can keep its normal right-guard plan and use Kilty as swing depth. Kilty may still dress because of his ability to cover tackle, guard and emergency center work, but his offensive snap count could be limited.

If Ruiz is inactive: Wright is the leading candidate to start at right guard based on last week's substitution. Kilty would become a more important reserve and could be one injury away from offensive snaps.

If the Saints use a heavy package: Kilty's size and tackle background make him a possible extra-lineman option, though New Orleans has not announced that role. Treat it as a schematic possibility, not a projected certainty.

Fantasy football impact

Kilty has no standalone fantasy value in traditional leagues, and offensive linemen are not individual defensive player options. His relevance is indirect: the health and continuity of the Saints' front can affect Tyler Shough's protection and the rushing efficiency of Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and CJ Donaldson.

Fantasy managers should not downgrade the Saints' skill players solely because Kilty was elevated. The more meaningful variable is Ruiz's status. If Ruiz is inactive, the line would be using a rookie replacement at right guard with Kilty serving as depth, which adds some downside against Pittsburgh's pass rush. Kamara and Miller remain role-driven fantasy decisions, not sits based on this transaction alone.

What to watch before kickoff

The official inactive list should clarify Ruiz's availability roughly 90 minutes before kickoff. The Saints' viewing guide lists Steelers–Saints for Sunday, October 25 at 8:30 a.m. CT from Stade de France in Paris on NFL Network.

If Ruiz is active, watch whether Kilty dresses and whether he is used as an extra blocker. If Ruiz is inactive, monitor whether Wright starts and whether New Orleans leans on quick throws or extra protection against T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. A material role change should be handled as an update to this same canonical article.

Bottom line

Kilty's elevation is a practical depth move with real game-day value because Ruiz is questionable. Wright remains the likely first replacement at right guard, while Kilty supplies size, tackle experience and emergency interior flexibility. The transaction does not create a fantasy pickup, but it gives the Saints another way to protect their run game and quarterback if the offensive line is forced to adjust in Paris.
