Fantasy Football Roster Construction Guide

Verified basics first
Roster construction is the plan for how you allocate your draft capital and bench spots across positions so you can score weekly while surviving injuries and bye weeks. The right approach depends on your league’s lineup requirements (how many starters at each position), scoring, and roster size.
Start with your league settings
Before you draft, write down: (1) starting lineup slots, (2) flex and superflex rules, (3) PPR/half-PPR/standard scoring, (4) number of bench spots, and (5) whether you have IR. Those settings determine positional scarcity and how aggressively you should chase upside.
Superflex changes everything
If your league allows a second quarterback in a superflex spot, quarterbacks become dramatically more valuable because the weekly scoring gap between starting QBs and replacement-level options is usually larger than at other positions. In most superflex formats, you should plan to leave the draft with at least two starting-caliber quarterbacks.
Depth planning: bench spots are a resource
A common mistake is drafting a ‘safe’ bench that can’t ever crack your starting lineup. Use your bench for (a) injury insurance at positions where you’re thin, and (b) high-upside players who can become weekly starters if their role grows.

Bye weeks: manage, don’t over-manage
You should be aware of bye-week pileups, especially at quarterback and tight end, but don’t sacrifice major value just to spread byes perfectly. A better approach is to draft value first, then use waivers and trades to patch one-week gaps.
Football Nation analysis
If you’re unsure how to balance ‘floor’ vs ‘ceiling,’ build a stable weekly core early (players with locked-in roles), then spend your final third of picks on volatility: rookies, ambiguous backfields, and receivers who could jump a tier with a role change. That’s how you create trade leverage and league-winning outcomes.
