The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 27 to 6 at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday by winning both lines of scrimmage. Pittsburgh rushed for 200 yards, produced eight sacks and turned two early Cleveland fumbles into control of the game. Jaylen Warren ran for 143 yards and a touchdown, and the Steelers moved to 6 and 2 with sole possession of first place in the AFC North. Cleveland fell to 5 and 3.

The answer: Pittsburgh controlled the game before the score separated

Cleveland opened with fumbles on its first two possessions. The Steelers converted the second into Rico Dowdle's nine yard touchdown run for a 7 to 0 lead. Pittsburgh did not turn every early red zone trip into a touchdown, but its defense kept forcing Cleveland to play from behind. The Browns managed only two Andre Szmyt field goals and never reached the end zone.

The decisive sequence came late in the second quarter and early in the third. Aaron Rodgers found Pat Freiermuth for 28 yards, then Pittsburgh kept the offense on the field at the goal line with one second left. Freiermuth scored on a one yard run for a 20 to 6 halftime lead. After the break, Rodgers connected with Darnell Washington for 58 yards to the Cleveland one. Warren scored on the next play, making it 27 to 6 with 9:39 left in the third quarter.

Verified leaders and team totals

Warren carried 17 times for 143 yards and a touchdown. Dowdle added 56 yards and a score on 15 carries. Pittsburgh finished with 200 rushing yards and averaged 6.1 yards per attempt. Rodgers completed 13 of 25 passes for 172 yards with one interception. Washington led the Steelers with three receptions for a career high 94 yards.

Deshaun Watson completed 27 of 39 passes for 324 yards, but he was sacked eight times and did not throw a touchdown. Harold Fannin Jr. caught 10 passes for 154 yards. Cleveland gained 319 net yards to Pittsburgh's 361, yet the Browns rushed for only 34 yards and lost both of their fumbles. Those figures explain why Cleveland's passing volume did not translate into points.

Why the Steelers won

Pittsburgh's offensive line created immediate movement. Warren had runs of 51 and 23 yards, while Dowdle gave the Steelers a second downhill option. The run game created shorter third downs and forced Cleveland's front to defend the full width of the formation. Pittsburgh scored touchdowns on the ground from three different players: Dowdle, Freiermuth and Warren.

The pass rush supplied the other half of the formula. T.J. Watt recorded two sacks, Patrick Queen had one and a half, Cameron Heyward had one and a half, and the defense reached Watson eight times in all. Cleveland was four of 13 on third down and zero of two on fourth down in the official gamebook. Pittsburgh was four of 11 on third down. The modest third down rates make the explosive runs, takeaways and red zone finishing even more important.

The red zone difference was decisive. Pittsburgh converted three of five trips into touchdowns, while Cleveland finished zero of three. The Browns reached the Pittsburgh five early in the fourth quarter, but three Watson incompletions followed a negative run and the possession ended on downs. Cleveland held the ball for 30:15, slightly longer than Pittsburgh, but it did not finish drives.

Football and fantasy consequences

Warren's 17 carries and explosive runs keep him in weekly fantasy lineups. Dowdle remains a useful complementary option, though the split matters more than the touchdown alone. Washington's 94 yards came on only three catches, so he is best treated as a matchup dependent tight end rather than a guaranteed volume play. Freiermuth's rushing touchdown was a designed short yardage wrinkle and should not be projected as a normal weekly role.

For Cleveland, Watson's 324 passing yards came from game script and heavy pressure. Fannin's 10 catches and 154 yards make him the most bankable fantasy takeaway because the targets survived negative game flow. Quinshon Judkins had 11 carries for 25 yards, a reminder that Cleveland's run game becomes fragile when the offensive line cannot prevent early disruption.

Standings impact, counterargument and next checkpoint

Pittsburgh enters its bye at 6 and 2 after a fourth straight win and now leads the AFC North. Cleveland is 5 and 3 and travels to New Orleans in Week 9. The strongest counterargument to treating this as a complete Steelers offensive breakthrough is that Rodgers finished with only 172 passing yards and Pittsburgh left points on the field in the first half. The next checkpoint is whether the line can reproduce this rushing efficiency after the bye against a defense that does not gift two early fumbles.

For Cleveland, the next checkpoint is protection. Watson produced 324 passing yards despite eight sacks, but a repeat of that pressure rate will erase the value of the volume. The Browns also need a red zone answer after settling for two field goals and finishing without a touchdown for the first time this season.
