Steelers at Buccaneers Week 6 Guide: Injuries, Fantasy and Pick

4 min read

Pittsburgh enters Sunday at 3 and 2 with the steadier quarterback, the stronger pass rush, and a chance to turn one road win into control of its early AFC North race. Tampa Bay is 1 and 4 but arrives with genuine momentum after a 24 to 16 win at Dallas. The central question is whether the Buccaneers can protect rookie Jalon Daniels and build another game around Bucky Irving while Baker Mayfield remains unavailable.

Factual cutoff: Friday, October 16, 2026 at 7:35 PM Central. Team statistics cover completed games through Week 5. Injury designations are from the final Friday report. Any market figures below are dated snapshots, not executable live quotes.

Game information

Steelers at Buccaneers, Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 PM Eastern, noon Central, at Raymond James Stadium. CBS carries the game. Pittsburgh is 3 and 2. Tampa Bay is 1 and 4.

The injury report changes the quarterback matchup

Tampa Bay ruled out Baker Mayfield with a right thumb injury. Jalon Daniels will make his third straight start. Daniels completed his first victory as a starter in Dallas with 189 passing yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions, but Pittsburgh presents a sharper pressure test. T.J. Watt had 4.5 sacks through five games and Alex Highsmith had 3.0. The Buccaneers need manageable third downs because long drop backs invite the strongest part of Pittsburgh's defense.

The Buccaneers also ruled out safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and receiver David Sills V. Cornerback Benjamin Morrison is doubtful. Linebackers SirVocea Dennis and Josiah Trotter, corner Ayden Garnes, and running back Sean Tucker are questionable. Tristan Wirfs finished the week as a full participant and carries no game designation, an important positive against the Steelers edge rush.

Pittsburgh ruled out receivers Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek plus safety DeShon Elliott. DK Metcalf is questionable after missing Friday with an illness. Jalen Ramsey, Rico Dowdle, Jamel Dean, and Keeanu Benton are also questionable. Metcalf's status matters most to the shape of the offense. If he plays near full strength, Aaron Rodgers retains his best outside size and downfield target. If he sits or is limited, Pittsburgh must ask more of tight end Pat Freiermuth and running back Jaylen Warren.

When Pittsburgh has the ball

The cleanest matchup is Rodgers against a Tampa Bay secondary missing Winfield and possibly Morrison. Rodgers had 1,234 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions on 184 attempts through Week 5. Those numbers support controlled aggression rather than a pass only plan. Tampa Bay entered the week ranked second in run defense, so Pittsburgh should use motion, quick throws, and Warren's receiving ability to prevent the front from attacking one tendency.

Warren is the key stress point. He led Pittsburgh with 410 rushing yards and also supplied 230 receiving yards through five games. His 80 yard catch and 50 yard run against Indianapolis showed that the Steelers do not need a dozen deep drops to create explosive plays. Tampa Bay's best counter is to tackle cleanly, keep Warren from turning check downs into chunk gains, and force Pittsburgh to win repeatedly on third down.

When Tampa Bay has the ball

Irving is the foundation. He had 406 rushing yards on 77 carries through Week 5 and produced a career high 165 rushing yards in Dallas. A productive first down run game can protect Daniels from obvious passing situations and slow Pittsburgh's edge rush. The counterargument is that Pittsburgh can load the box against a rookie quarterback and dare Tampa Bay to win outside.

Daniels must avoid holding the ball while routes develop. Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson can create useful yards if the offense stays on schedule, but the passing game becomes much harder if Watt and Highsmith control the edges. Tampa Bay should emphasize quick decisions, movement throws, and selective play action rather than asking Daniels to match Rodgers possession for possession.

Fantasy football consequences

In standard full point per reception formats, Warren remains the strongest Pittsburgh play because his rushing and receiving paths survive several game scripts. Rodgers is a reasonable streaming quarterback, but Metcalf's illness adds volatility to the ceiling. Freiermuth gains touchdown and target appeal if the receiver rotation is thin. Metcalf managers need the Sunday inactive list before locking him into lineups.

Irving remains Tampa Bay's clearest fantasy starter because his workload should lead the offense. Daniels is a high risk option outside of deeper or two quarterback formats. Egbuka and Johnson carry flex level uncertainty because a lower pass volume plan can reduce targets even if Tampa Bay plays efficiently. Tucker's questionable designation also matters to the backfield rotation.

Market context, not a live quote

An opening snapshot published October 11 listed Pittsburgh by 2.5 with a total of 40.5. A Thursday matchup listing cited Pittsburgh by 2.5 and a total of 39.5. That movement is consistent with a lower scoring expectation after Mayfield's absence became clearer, but these are published snapshots rather than a current betting screen. Prediction and strongest counterargument

Football Nation prediction: Steelers 23, Buccaneers 17. Pittsburgh has the more stable quarterback situation and the pass rush most likely to determine the game. Rodgers can attack a depleted secondary without forcing the ball, while Warren supplies an answer when Tampa Bay takes away the first read.

The strongest counterargument is that Tampa Bay can reproduce its Dallas formula. If Irving controls early downs, Daniels avoids turnovers, and the defense limits explosive yards after the catch, the Buccaneers can shrink the game and give themselves a fourth quarter possession to win it. Metcalf's availability could also narrow Pittsburgh's passing advantage.

Next checkpoint: confirm the Sunday inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff, with special attention to Metcalf, Ramsey, Dowdle, Benton, Morrison, Dennis, Trotter, Garnes, and Tucker. Weather and any material market changes also deserve a fresh check.
