The Houston Texans made a two part running back move Monday, signing rookie Joshua Pitsenberger to the practice squad and releasing Deuce Vaughn from the practice squad. The transaction is official, but it does not put Pitsenberger on the active roster or guarantee a Week 9 role.

What the Texans changed

Houston's official November 2 transaction notice lists four moves: defensive tackle Naquan Jones joined the active roster, defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy was waived, Pitsenberger joined the practice squad and Vaughn was released from the practice squad.

  • Joshua Pitsenberger: Signed to the Texans practice squad. The rookie is listed at 6 foot and 215 pounds.

  • Deuce Vaughn: Released from the Texans practice squad. Houston did not announce a corresponding active roster role for another back.

  • Week 9 context: The practice squad designation means Pitsenberger must still be elevated or promoted before he can play.

Why Joshua Pitsenberger is worth tracking

Pitsenberger arrives with a high volume college résumé. Yale's official player biography credits him with 313 carries for 1,571 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns in 12 games in 2025, plus 16 receptions for 128 yards. He finished his Yale career with 3,435 rushing yards and 41 rushing touchdowns.

That production explains the developmental appeal: he handled a heavy workload, produced in short yardage situations and added at least some receiving experience. It does not establish an NFL role, however. College volume is a scouting data point, not evidence that Houston will elevate him or use him ahead of backs already on the active roster.

Immediate depth chart and fantasy football impact

Redraft leagues: Pitsenberger is not a waiver claim in standard formats. A practice squad signing alone creates no startable workload, and the Texans did not announce him as a Week 9 elevation.

Deep dynasty leagues: He is a watch list player rather than an automatic add. His 2025 rushing volume and touchdown production are useful, but fantasy managers should wait for an active roster promotion, repeated game day elevation or clear practice report evidence before assigning value.

Deuce Vaughn: The release removes him from Houston's practice squad depth chart. It does not create a direct fantasy promotion for Pitsenberger because the two moves concern reserve depth, not a declared offensive rotation.

Texans skill players: Do not downgrade Houston's active running backs because of this signing. The meaningful fantasy signal would be an injury, an active roster transaction or a game day elevation followed by offensive snaps.

What to watch before Week 9

  1. Whether Houston elevates or promotes Pitsenberger before the game.

  2. The Texans' official practice participation and game status report for the active running backs.

  3. Any special teams role, because reserve backs often earn game day opportunities there before receiving offensive work.

  4. Whether Vaughn signs elsewhere, which would create a separate depth chart story for his next team.

Bottom line

Houston added a productive rookie runner to its developmental depth and moved on from Vaughn, but the transaction is not an immediate fantasy depth chart change. Pitsenberger belongs on deep league watch lists only. The actionable trigger is an elevation or promotion, not the practice squad signing itself.
