Titans Claim Jonah Laulu: Week 8 Role and IDP Impact
The Tennessee Titans added an experienced interior defender Wednesday, claiming Jonah Laulu off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. Tennessee waived defensive lineman Timmy Horne in the corresponding move. For a 1-6 team preparing to visit Cincinnati, this is not a headline-grabbing overhaul. It is a practical depth bet on a 26-year-old with 22 NFL starts, useful size and enough recent production to compete for rotational snaps immediately.
Laulu’s arrival also lands at a relevant moment. John Franklin-Myers did not practice Wednesday because of a groin injury, according to Tennessee’s Week 8 injury report. That does not guarantee Laulu will dress Sunday or play a major role. It does make the claim more than a long-range roster stash, because the Titans may need another body capable of handling interior work while the week develops.
What the Titans changed
Tennessee announced that Laulu was awarded to the club one day after Las Vegas waived him. The Raiders’ move created the roster spot used to activate wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr. from injured reserve. Because Laulu went through waivers instead of signing as a free agent, the Titans assumed his existing contract and added him directly to the active roster.
The 6-foot-5, 289-pound defender entered the NFL as Indianapolis’ seventh-round pick in 2024 after playing at Oklahoma. The Colts waived him at the end of that preseason, and the Raiders claimed him the following day. He then grew from a rotational rookie into a 15-game starter in 2025.
What Tennessee is getting in Jonah Laulu
Across three seasons in Las Vegas, Laulu appeared in 39 games and started 22. Tennessee’s official release credits him with 91 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hits during that span. His most productive year came in 2025, when he made 51 tackles and four sacks while starting 15 games. Those totals do not profile him as a dominant pass rusher, but they do show that he has already handled a real NFL workload.
His role had shrunk in 2026. Laulu played in five of the Raiders’ first seven games, recorded five tackles and a half-sack, and was a healthy scratch twice. That recent usage is the clearest reason to keep expectations measured. Tennessee is adding a player with starting experience, but not one who was locked into his former team’s weekly rotation.
Week 8 role against Cincinnati
Laulu gives Tennessee another large, position-flexible option for early downs and interior pass-rush packages. The Titans have allowed 918 rushing yards through seven games, an average of 131.1 per game, while producing 11 sacks. A waiver claim alone will not solve either issue. His best immediate path is to absorb dependable rotational snaps, protect the starters from excessive workload and earn more opportunities with sturdy run defense.
The Wednesday absence for Franklin-Myers increases the need to monitor Thursday and Friday practice reports. If Franklin-Myers returns quickly, Laulu can be introduced gradually. If the groin issue lingers, Tennessee could need Laulu active against Cincinnati even with only a few days to learn terminology. His prior experience in multiple fronts should help, but a full starter-level package in Week 8 would still be an aggressive projection.
Fantasy football and IDP impact
IDP scoring framework: This analysis assumes one point per solo tackle, half a point per assisted tackle, three points per sack, two points per forced fumble or recovery, and four points per interception. League settings vary, so Laulu’s value rises in formats that require defensive tackles or reward sacks more heavily.
For standard fantasy football leagues, the transaction has no direct value. Defensive tackles rarely produce predictable weekly scoring without a strong sack or tackle floor, and Laulu has only five tackles through five appearances this season.
In deep IDP formats that require a defensive tackle, Laulu belongs on the watch list rather than in starting lineups. Managers should look for three things: whether he is active Sunday, how many defensive snaps he receives, and whether he plays on passing downs. A workload above 30 snaps with interior rush opportunities would make him more interesting in tackle-heavy or big-play scoring. Until that happens, he is a speculative bench option at most.
Standard redraft leagues: no add.
Deep defensive-tackle IDP leagues: monitor, but do not start yet.
Most important signals: active status, total defensive snaps and pass-rush usage.
Strongest counterargument
The strongest counterargument to treating Laulu as immediate Week 8 help is his recent role in Las Vegas. He was inactive twice, did not start in 2026 and recorded only five tackles with half a sack in five appearances. Tennessee may simply view him as experienced depth, especially if John Franklin-Myers returns to practice. A meaningful fantasy change requires actual game day activation, defensive snaps and interior rush work.
What the move means for the Raiders
For the Raiders, the departure is less disruptive than the résumé suggests. Laulu had already been inactive in two games and had not started this season. Las Vegas chose the roster spot needed for Thornton’s return, and Tennessee decided the defender’s 2025 starting experience was worth claiming. Both decisions can be reasonable at the same time.
What to watch next
The Titans play the Bengals at noon Central on Sunday, November 1. The next two injury reports should clarify whether Laulu is simply new depth or a realistic part of the Week 8 plan. His official game-day status and snap share will be the first meaningful evidence.
