Ugo Amadi and Jaret Patterson Define Denver's Week 9 Depth Plan

Denver's three practice squad additions this week are easy to dismiss as routine transactions. Their value is clearer when the moves are read as a risk map. Running back Jaret Patterson supplies another experienced option behind the active pairing of J.K. Dobbins and Jonah Coleman. Defensive back Ugo Amadi brings 85 games of NFL experience to a secondary that has already asked reserves to handle real snaps. Defensive tackle Jordan Miller gives the interior another 307 pound body for practice and developmental work. None of the three signings guarantees a Week 9 elevation. Together, though, they show where Denver wants protection before its next game.

The Broncos announced the additions on Nov. 3 and also released wide receivers Eli Pancol and Cam Ross from the practice squad. Football Nation checked the official transaction, current roster, team statistics and related injury news at 11:14 a.m. Central on Nov. 4. The evidence supports a depth and contingency analysis, not a projection that any newcomer will dress Sunday.

The moves protect three different pressure points

Patterson is the most immediately recognizable fantasy name, but his present role matters more than his résumé. Denver's active roster lists Dobbins and Coleman at running back. The practice squad lists Patterson and Cody Schrader, while RJ Harvey and Tyler Badie appear on injured reserve. Patterson therefore begins as insurance, not as a member of a three back game plan. He has usable experience: the Broncos say he carried 41 times for 159 yards and one touchdown in six games for the Chargers in 2025, and he has averaged 4.2 yards per touch over his career. That experience can shorten the installation if Denver needs an elevation later.

The current production still points to Dobbins and Coleman. Through eight games, official team statistics list Dobbins at 94 carries for 306 yards and three touchdowns. Coleman has 30 carries for 134 yards and two rushing scores, plus nine receptions for 97 yards. Coleman also produced a career high 104 scrimmage yards in the Week 8 win over Kansas City, including a 51 yard catch and run and the game winning touchdown. Patterson's arrival protects that structure; it does not replace it.

Why Amadi matters even before a game day elevation

Amadi has appeared in 85 NFL games and has recorded 208 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. That résumé makes him different from a purely developmental signing. He can help a practice week run cleanly because he has seen NFL route distributions, special teams assignments and the communication problems that arise when the secondary changes personnel.

Denver's Week 8 defensive depth offers the relevant comparison. The team's next day review noted that safety JL Skinner played nine defensive snaps against Kansas City after logging only two defensive snaps across the first seven games. That is the practical reason for carrying an experienced reserve: the player who looks peripheral on Wednesday can become necessary after one injury or package change. Still, Amadi must learn Denver's calls and earn an elevation before he can affect the Sunday rotation. Experience reduces the onboarding risk; it does not erase it.

Jordan Miller is a developmental interior answer

Miller is listed at 6 foot 3 and 307 pounds. He previously spent time on Denver's practice squad in 2024 and 2025 and returned during the 2026 offseason, but he has not appeared in a regular season game. His short term value is therefore best framed around practice work: giving the offense a legitimate interior body for scout periods, supporting short yardage preparation and preserving rep quality when the active defensive line needs its workload managed.

The counterargument is straightforward. Practice squad churn is common, and Miller may never receive a game day elevation. That uncertainty is real. The move still has information value because Denver chose an interior defender with prior system exposure rather than using the spot at another position. It suggests the club preferred continuity and functional practice depth over a longer acclimation period.

Fantasy consequence: watch the transaction wire, not Patterson's name

In standard redraft formats, Patterson is a watch list player rather than an add. Dobbins has led the backfield in carries, while Coleman's receiving usage and recent explosive play give him the clearest growth case. Patterson would need at least two pieces of evidence before becoming actionable: an official game day elevation and an availability change involving one of the active backs. Even then, his first assignment could be special teams or emergency depth rather than a meaningful share of touches.

Managers in deep dynasty leagues can treat the signing as a reminder that Patterson remains on an NFL roster, but not as a change in long term value. The strongest uncertainty is Denver's weekly protection and elevation plan, which is not public yet. No responsible projection should assign him touches until the club supplies that evidence.

The next checkpoint

The first Week 9 injury report will show whether Denver is managing a position group that helps explain these additions. The next decisive checkpoints are any Saturday practice squad elevations and the official inactive list. If Patterson, Amadi or Miller is elevated, the corresponding active player availability and special teams needs will tell us more than the transaction alone.
