Walter Nolen Ruled Out vs. Cowboys: Cardinals Run Defense and Fantasy Impact

3 min read

The Arizona Cardinals will be without starting defensive tackle Walter Nolen III against the Dallas Cowboys. Nolen did not practice Wednesday, Thursday or Friday because of an ankle injury and was ruled out on Arizona’s final Week 8 injury report.

The absence matters most in the middle of the Cardinals’ defense, where Dallas has already given Javonte Williams 110 carries and eight rushing touchdowns. It also changes the early-down test for Arizona’s defensive rotation and slightly lowers the floor of the Cardinals D/ST.

Walter Nolen’s Week 8 status

Arizona’s official report lists Nolen as out after three consecutive did-not-practice designations. The second-year defender is the first-team defensive tackle on the Cardinals’ depth chart and has started all six games he has played this season.

Nolen has 14 total tackles and one sack in 2026. Arizona selected him 16th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, and the team has moved him into a full-time starting role after he appeared in six games as a rookie.

Cardinals replacement plan: L.J. Collier and the interior rotation

The official depth chart lists L.J. Collier directly behind Nolen at defensive tackle. Arizona can also distribute work among Dante Stills, Darius Robinson, nose tackles Roy Lopez and Andrew Billings, and other active linemen rather than asking one player to duplicate every Nolen snap.

Collier has nine tackles this season, while Robinson has 18 tackles and two sacks. That depth gives Arizona options, but removing a 300-pound starter from the front can change which linemen receive double teams and how often the Cardinals need safety support against the run.

What it means for Javonte Williams and the Cowboys offense

Javonte Williams receives the clearest fantasy bump. He has 110 carries for 472 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt. Nolen’s absence does not guarantee a breakout, but it improves the matchup for Dallas’ interior rushing concepts and strengthens Williams’ touchdown outlook near the goal line.

Dak Prescott can benefit indirectly if Dallas stays ahead of the chains and faces fewer obvious passing downs. Prescott has thrown for 1,851 yards and 13 touchdowns, and a functional run game would give the Cowboys more flexibility with play action. Because Nolen has one sack this season, the direct pass-protection change is smaller than the run-game impact.

Fantasy football and D/ST impact

Javonte Williams: Treat him as a stronger start, especially in touchdown-friendly formats. The volume was already present; the missing first-team defensive tackle improves the path to efficient early-down carries.

Dallas offensive line and Dak Prescott: Apply a modest upgrade rather than a dramatic one. The biggest benefit is a cleaner offensive structure if the Cowboys can avoid long-yardage situations.

Cardinals D/ST: Downgrade Arizona slightly. The unit still has Josh Sweat, Budda Baker and multiple rotational linemen, but losing Nolen reduces interior continuity against a back with eight rushing scores.

L.J. Collier and Darius Robinson: Deep IDP managers should monitor snaps rather than chase the injury alone. Collier is the listed backup at Nolen’s position, while Robinson has produced more sacks and could absorb high-leverage interior work.

Why the impact could be smaller than expected

Arizona’s line already operates as a rotation, and Dallas’ 4.3 yards per carry from Williams is productive rather than overwhelming. The Cardinals can reduce the matchup problem if Collier holds his gap, Robinson creates penetration and the linebackers tackle cleanly. Nolen’s absence is meaningful, but it should not be treated as a complete collapse of the run defense.

What to watch Sunday

The Cardinals visit the Cowboys on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. CT at AT&T Stadium. Watch who starts beside Dante Stills and Roy Lopez, whether Dallas attacks the replacement early, and which Arizona lineman receives the goal-line snaps.

For fantasy decisions, the most useful early signal will be Dallas’ success rate on first-down runs. If Williams consistently reaches the second level without contact, the Cardinals may have to commit extra defenders to the box and expose their coverage structure.
