Football players wear towels to keep their hands dry and preserve control of the ball.

It is optional equipment. Its practical value depends on the player's job, the conditions and personal preference.

What a towel changes

A center needs a dependable snap, and a quarterback must secure that exchange before controlling the next handoff or throw. Receivers, running backs and returners also have reasons to dry their hands before handling the football.

A towel removes moisture; it does not create an adhesive grip or make wet conditions disappear. A poor exchange, contact from a defender or a bad grip can still produce a fumble. A towel cannot change the rule for determining possession.

For example, a quarterback may wipe the throwing hand before a rainy third down. That prepares his grip for the snap and pass. The offensive line still has to protect, the receiver still has to separate and the ball still has to arrive accurately.

The NFL regulates the accessory

The 2026 NFL uniform rule permits one white, licensed towel approved by the league office. Players cannot add personal messages, logos, names, symbols or illustrations. Loose towels and other wiping materials cannot be discarded on the playing field.

That is why a towel that looks ordinary can still be subject to an equipment inspection. The permission to wear it is conditional on compliance with the uniform requirements.

Towel, gloves and hand warmer

These items serve different purposes. A towel absorbs surface moisture. Gloves provide their own approved gripping surface and protection. A waist hand warmer helps keep hands warm in cold conditions. A player may use more than one of these because wet hands and cold hands are different problems.

The towel's location does not identify a secret assignment or position. Players choose an accessible place that fits their equipment and routine. The useful viewing clue is when it gets used: usually during the preparation for the next ball handling task.
