49ers vs. Rams Week 1 Start/Sit and Prop Targets

Sep 9
9 min read

Updated: 20 hours ago

Start Christian McCaffrey, Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams. George Kittle also carries no game designation and is cleared to play, but he remains the difficult Melbourne decision because eligibility does not answer how many routes and snaps San Francisco will give him in his first game back from an Achilles injury.

Final status and market research checked September 9, 2026, at 11:55 p.m. Central. San Francisco faces Los Angeles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday, September 10, at 7:35 p.m. Central / 8:35 p.m. Eastern, on Netflix. In Melbourne, that is Friday, September 11, at 10:35 a.m. AEST. The Rams are the designated home team at this international venue.

Our decisions assume a 12 team league, half PPR, one starting quarterback, four points per passing touchdown and six per rushing or receiving touchdown. These are Football Nation editorial judgments. All baseline statistics below cover the 2025 regular season, not the playoffs or a fabricated 2026 sample.

The lineup card

Player or group

Football Nation call

Main condition or risk

Christian McCaffrey

START: RB1

Normal availability and no unexpected workload restriction.

Puka Nacua

START: WR1

No game designation; cleared on the final Rams report.

Kyren Williams

START: strong RB2 with RB1 upside

Blake Corum still has a role.

Davante Adams

START: WR2

Touchdown dependence makes the weekly floor less secure.

Matthew Stafford

START: QB1

Bosa’s return matters; do not recycle last year’s defense unchanged.

Brock Purdy

BORDERLINE QB1; START in superflex

Less automatic in a shallow one QB league.

Mike Evans

CONDITIONAL START: WR2 / flex

Active with no newly reported limitation.

Deebo Samuel Sr.

FLEX in deeper lineups

No game designation, but expected workload remains uncertain.

George Kittle

SIT for a healthy, established TE

Playing time uncertainty outweighs automatic name value.

Jake Tonges

SIT unless Kittle is inactive

Limited Kittle does not guarantee a full Tonges role.

Blake Corum

SIT in ordinary weekly lineups

Keep as valuable depth rather than assume lead volume.

Rams secondary tight ends

SIT / deep streamers

Do not assume one player inherits every TE route.

These calls are relative to credible alternatives. A manager in a deep league may reasonably accept more uncertainty than someone choosing among several established starters. An active designation answers eligibility, not snap count.

Sources: Rams official 2025 statistics, 49ers official 2025 statistics and Evans’ official career record. A passing touchdown is not counted as a receiving touchdown for the quarterback. Receiving TD totals are labeled separately from rushing TD totals; Evans’ row reflects Tampa Bay, not San Francisco.

Start McCaffrey for the complete workload, not only rushing yards

McCaffrey’s official record adds up to 2,126 yards from scrimmage and 17 total touchdowns. His 413 combined carries and receptions averaged about 24.3 touches per game. That receiving component is why a modest rushing result does not automatically translate into a disappointing fantasy total.

Our call is an RB1 start when he is active without an unexpected limitation. Full PPR gives his catches more weight; standard scoring removes those reception points but not the receiving yards or touchdowns. Do not bench him solely because the rushing prop below looks less compelling than his receiving market. The fantasy decision and the prop decision ask different questions.

Start Kyren, but do not erase Corum

Kyren’s official player record supports both a rushing and receiving case. His combined 2025 output was 1,533 yards and 13 touchdowns. Corum’s 145 carries in the team table are an equally important reminder that Kyren did not monopolize the backfield. We like Kyren as a strong RB2 with RB1 upside, not because he is certain to receive every meaningful carry.

San Francisco has lost Alfred Collins for the season, Reuters reported on September 9. That is relevant to the interior defensive rotation, but one absence does not create a guaranteed rushing total. Our Collins injury breakdown explains the confirmed change without treating a replacement defender as an automatic failure.

Puka and Adams are starts for different reasons

The sourced table shows the distinction clearly: Puka supplied much more reception and yardage volume, while Adams scored more receiving touchdowns. We treat Puka as the stronger volume based start and Adams as a WR2 whose ceiling can arrive through scoring. Adams’ previous touchdown rate is not a number to project mechanically into one game.

Nacua belongs in the lineup. The Rams’ final injury report gives him no game designation, so the earlier eligibility question is resolved. The game-day inactive list remains the control for an unexpected late setback, but there is no current report-based reason to downgrade him.

Stafford is a start; Purdy requires a little more comparison

Stafford’s passing production makes him our preferred quarterback in this game. Purdy is usable, especially in superflex, but his nine game 2025 sample should not be compared with Stafford’s full season without acknowledging the difference. The table contains the official totals; we are not converting either player’s touchdown rate into a guaranteed Thursday result.

The defensive context is not frozen in 2025. The 49ers’ final report gives Bosa no game designation, while the Rams’ final report lists Aaron Donald out and gives Myles Garrett no designation. A returned defender’s effectiveness and workload remain separate from whether he dresses.

Our one QB recommendation is Stafford first, then Purdy as a borderline starter rather than a universal must start. We would not sit an established elite alternative simply to stack a quarterback with a receiver in this game. In superflex, both are starting options barring new availability information.

Evans and Deebo: use the current 49ers roster

The 49ers depth chart updated September 8 lists Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr. in the starting receiver group. Advice built around an old San Francisco receiver room would miss the actual decision. Evans’ prior season was only eight games; treating him as an automatic repeat of a typical full season would misrepresent the sample.

We prefer Evans as a conditional WR2 or flex if he is active without a reported restriction. Deebo moves from a deeper flex to a viable upside flex because San Francisco dressed only two running backs and made Jordan James inactive, increasing the chance that Samuel supplements his receiver work with designed backfield touches. That is a role-based upgrade, not a promised carry total.NFL injury announcement.

Why Kittle can be a sit even when he plays

Kittle has no game designation on San Francisco’s final report, so he is cleared to play. Kyle Shanahan’s September 9 workload comments did not establish a precise snap cap, however. We are not presenting speculation about 10 or 20 snaps as a team announcement. Prefer a healthy tight end with an established receiving role when that alternative is available; managers without one can start Kittle while accepting a wider-than-normal range of outcomes.

Tonges is not an automatic solution merely because Kittle might play less. A shared role can leave both players short of the routes needed for a dependable start. Tonges becomes a late streamer only if Kittle suffers an unexpected setback; otherwise, our preference is to avoid guessing that the backup inherits every useful target.

The same caution applies to the Rams’ tight end room. Their 2025 team statistics show receiving touchdowns distributed among Colby Parkinson, Tyler Higbee, Davis Allen and Terrance Ferguson. The existence of a promising young player does not establish that he now owns the group’s routes. We would keep those options behind an established starter until usage gives us a better answer.

Player props: the receiving markets are more interesting than blind rushing overs

The current price snapshot comes from talkSPORT’s September 10 prop board, checked at 11:55 p.m. Central on September 9. It reported five specific FanDuel or BetMGM prices. Football Nation independently applies the official final injury reports and does not adopt the source article’s incorrect premise that Aaron Donald will play; Donald is out.

PASS until a current number and price are confirmed

The listed prices are publication snapshots, not guaranteed live offers. They can change or be unavailable by jurisdiction. The same source’s football rationale is not treated as authoritative because it incorrectly discusses Donald as active; only the quoted market numbers are used here.

McCaffrey receptions and Purdy passing: McCaffrey’s 2025 receiving role makes over 4.5 catches a more direct fit than forcing a rushing-yard opinion. Purdy under 244.5 depends on the Rams creating pressure without Donald and on San Francisco avoiding a pass-heavy chase script. A move to 5.5 receptions or below 240.5 passing yards materially changes those calls.

Kyren rushing and touchdown: Collins’ absence weakens San Francisco’s interior rotation, supporting the over-55.5 case. The touchdown price is less forgiving because one goal-line series can go to Corum or Stafford can throw. Starting Kyren in fantasy does not require betting either market.

Purdy’s longest completion and Kittle: the 36.5-yard under can win even if Purdy is efficient, but San Francisco’s yards-after-catch talent makes every short completion dangerous. At -120, there is no reason to chase a worse price. Kittle is cleared, yet no fresh Kittle prop price was independently confirmed, so the correct decision is pass.

What to check before the Melbourne kickoff

The final reports list Collins and Donald out, while Kittle, Bosa, Nacua, Alaric Jackson and Garrett carry no game designation. San Francisco's game-day list now confirms James Thompson Jr. is active and Jordan James is inactive. Managers should still monitor any explicit late workload information, especially for Kittle.

The reported 49ers inactive list names Kurtis Rourke, Ephesians Prysock, Jordan James, Jordan Watkins, Tatum Bethune and Enrique Cruz as out. The list keeps Kittle, Bosa and James Thompson Jr. active.

Season outlook: one game can reveal role, but not settle every talent question. Track who runs routes, who stays on the field for passing situations and who earns repeated touches. Corum can remain valuable insurance after a quiet opener. A tight end’s touchdown on limited routes does not, by itself, solve next week’s lineup.
