Anthony Richardson's 198 Yard Night Changes the Colts Quarterback Plan

Anthony Richardson's preseason opener created the exact kind of argument that has followed him throughout his NFL career. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards, ran for 53 yards and a touchdown, and produced 198 total yards. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Indianapolis did not receive a simple answer in the 13 to 13 tie with New England. It received a clearer picture of how Richardson can help the 2026 team and why the Colts still cannot build the entire offense around him.
The package value is real
Richardson's athletic ability changes the geometry of a defense. A quarterback run adds another gap to defend, slows the backside pursuit and creates easier reads off play action. His rushing touchdown showed why Indianapolis can use him in short yardage, red zone and change of pace situations even if Daniel Jones opens the season as the primary starter. Richardson also connected repeatedly with Will Mallory, who caught six passes for 80 yards. That combination suggests the Colts can build a defined group of concepts around Richardson rather than asking him to operate the entire Jones offense without adjustment.
The turnover limit remains the problem
Indianapolis finished with four turnovers. Richardson accounted for two, and the mistakes erased much of the value created by his efficiency and rushing production. A specialty package only works when it creates a clear advantage. If the package also increases the chance of a giveaway, the coaching staff may become reluctant to use it in close games. Richardson does not need to become a risk free quarterback. He does need to show that the explosive plays arrive more often than the possession ending mistakes. The next two preseason games should focus on third down decisions, red zone reads and ball security after contact rather than raw yardage.
Mallory and Shrader changed two other competitions
Mallory's six catches and 80 yards strengthen his case for a larger role in the tight end rotation. He gave Richardson a reliable middle of the field option and created yards without requiring the quarterback to hold the ball. Spencer Shrader changed the kicking conversation by making a 61 yard field goal to tie the game. Long range alone does not settle a competition, but a kicker who can create points from beyond normal field goal range changes fourth down decisions and late game strategy. Indianapolis now has more reason to evaluate consistency under pressure rather than simply leg strength.
New England's defense raised its floor
The Patriots forced two fumbles and intercepted two passes. Kindle Vildor and John Saunders Jr. finished the interceptions, while the front disrupted both Richardson and Riley Leonard. Tommy DeVito completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, and Jam Miller added 55 rushing yards on 14 carries. That is useful depth evidence for a team that expects Drake Maye and the starting offense to carry the season. The concern came from Andy Borregales, who made only two of five field goal attempts and missed the possible winner from 49 yards. His other misses came from 56 and 55, but three misses still demand an immediate technique and operation review.
The 2026 projections
Football Nation projects Indianapolis in an 8 to 10 win range and on the edge of the AFC wild card race. Jones provides the steadier weekly baseline, while Richardson can raise the ceiling if the Colts use him selectively and protect the football. The projection moves upward if the two quarterback plan creates red zone efficiency without disrupting rhythm. It moves downward if the offense becomes divided or the turnovers continue. New England projects in a 9 to 11 win range and as an AFC playoff contender. The defense appears deep enough to create extra possessions, but the kicking operation could become a major problem in one score games.
Projection verdict
Richardson did not win the full time job in one preseason game, but he made himself too useful to ignore. Indianapolis should build a defined package around his rushing power, play action ability and connection with Mallory, then demand cleaner decisions before expanding it. New England left with greater confidence in its defensive depth and less confidence in its kicker. The tie did not settle either season, but it clarified the two factors most likely to swing close games for both teams.
