Official inactive list update

Factual cutoff: October 29, 2026 at 5:56 PM CDT. Brenton Cox Jr. is active against Carolina after being listed questionable with a quadriceps injury. The official inactive list removes the earlier availability uncertainty. Source: https://www.packers.com/news/packers-panthers-week-8-inactives-oct-29-2026

Football consequence: Green Bay keeps Cox in the edge rotation against a Carolina offensive line missing multiple starters. Fantasy consequence: the Packers D/ST retains another pressure path, while Cox remains a deeper big-play IDP option rather than a tackle-floor starter. Strongest counterargument: active status does not guarantee a normal snap share after limited walkthrough estimates. Next checkpoint: his first pass-rush package and early rotation behind the starting edge defenders.

Updated October 29, 2026, 11:24 am CT. Green Bay Packers edge defender Brenton Cox Jr. is questionable for Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers because of a quadriceps injury. He was limited Tuesday and Wednesday, and Green Bay has not announced whether he will play.

What changed for Brenton Cox Jr.

Cox appeared on the injury report Tuesday as a limited participant and remained limited Wednesday. The Packers then gave him a questionable designation for the 7:15 p.m. CT kickoff at Lambeau Field. This is a true game-time decision rather than a confirmed absence.

Green Bay has three other defensive complications. Defensive tackles Devonte Wyatt and Anthony Campbell are also questionable, while linebacker Zaire Franklin is out. The combined uncertainty matters more than Cox's individual status because it could reduce the number of healthy bodies available for the front-seven rotation.

Cox's role and 2026 production

The Packers' official depth chart lists Cox behind Lukas Van Ness at one edge position. Barryn Sorrell starts on the other side, with rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton listed behind him. That places Cox in a rotational role, not a locked-in every-down assignment.

Green Bay's official player page credits Cox with seven games, 20 combined tackles, 12 solo tackles and no sacks this season. Those numbers are useful context for fantasy managers: he contributes to the defense's depth, but he has not produced enough sacks or weekly volume to be a dependable individual defensive player starter in standard formats.

Packers D/ST fantasy impact

Football Nation view: Green Bay remains a playable D/ST even if Cox is inactive. Carolina allowed five sacks and committed three turnovers in its Week 7 loss to Tampa Bay. The Panthers also placed starting right tackle Taylor Moton on injured reserve and entered the short week with only seven healthy offensive linemen on the 53-man roster.

Cox being active would help Green Bay maintain a fresher edge rotation. If he sits, Van Ness and Sorrell could face heavier workloads, while Dennis-Sutton may be asked to absorb more rotational snaps. That is a depth concern, but not enough on its own to remove the Packers from fantasy lineups against a damaged Carolina line.

Fantasy scoring assumptions

This analysis assumes common team defense scoring of one point per sack, two per takeaway, six per defensive or return touchdown and standard points allowed bands. The IDP recommendation assumes one point per solo tackle, one half point per assisted tackle, three points per sack, two per forced fumble or recovery, two per interception and one per pass defended. League settings vary, so tackle heavy or big play formats can move Cox and the Green Bay edge rotation slightly.

IDP recommendation

Cox should stay on fantasy benches in most IDP leagues, even if active. His 20 combined tackles in seven appearances offer some deep-roster utility, but the zero-sack total and second-team depth-chart position leave a low floor. Managers in very deep, tackle-heavy defensive line formats can monitor his status, but they should not chase the questionable designation as a standalone opportunity.

Van Ness is the more relevant snap-share player if Cox is ruled out, though Green Bay has not promised an every-down redistribution. Dennis-Sutton is a watch-list name rather than an automatic streamer. Official inactive information and the first defensive series will provide better evidence than the pregame depth chart alone.

The strongest counterargument

Cox's availability may have limited fantasy significance because he is a rotational defender with no sacks this season. The larger risk is the cumulative condition of Green Bay's front: Wyatt, Campbell and Cox are all questionable, and Franklin is out. If multiple defenders are inactive, the Packers could have fewer substitution options and less flexibility against Carolina's run game.

What fantasy managers should do

For team defense leagues, Green Bay is still a startable Week 8 option, but managers should check the inactive list around 5:45 p.m. CT. One absence should not force a lineup change. Multiple front-seven absences would lower the ceiling and make the Packers more dependent on turnovers.

For IDP leagues, keep Cox benched unless the format is exceptionally deep. If he plays, treat him as a rotational option with tackle upside but little demonstrated sack production. If he is inactive, do not automatically add Dennis-Sutton without confirmation of a larger role.
