Broncos Activate Jonathon Cooper: Week 7 Role and Pass-Rush Impact
The Denver Broncos activated outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper to the 53-man roster Saturday, putting the veteran edge rusher in position to make his 2026 season debut against the Arizona Cardinals. The move gives a 4-2 Denver defense another proven pressure player while Jonah Elliss moves to injured reserve.
Activation is not the same as being declared active for the game. Cooper must still appear on Denver’s final game-day roster, and the Broncos have not promised a full workload after he missed the first six games. That makes his return meaningful for the defense but uncertain for individual fantasy managers.
What changed on Denver’s roster
Denver officially activated Cooper and rookie running back Jonah Coleman. The corresponding moves placed Elliss and running back Tyler Badie on injured reserve, requiring both players to miss at least four games.
The edge-rusher swap is especially important because Elliss had been part of the rotation that helped Denver produce 18 sacks through six games. Cooper restores veteran depth alongside Nik Bonitto, while Que Robinson and Dondrea Tillman remain available for rotational work.
Why Cooper changes the pass-rush rotation
The Broncos said Cooper recorded at least eight sacks, eight tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits in each of the previous three seasons. His official player profile lists 50 tackles, eight sacks, 16 quarterback hits and four passes defensed across 17 starts in 2025.
That production gives defensive coordinator Vance Joseph a player who can set an edge on early downs and rush opposite Bonitto in passing situations. It also lets Denver preserve pressure packages without forcing one replacement to absorb every snap Elliss leaves behind.
Denver did not need to wait for Cooper to generate pressure. Reuters reported the Broncos were tied for fourth in the NFL with 18 sacks entering Sunday, led by Zach Allen’s 4.5 and Bonitto’s 3.5. Cooper therefore joins an effective unit rather than being asked to rescue a struggling front.
The legal and league-status context
Cooper spent the first six games on the NFL Commissioner Exempt List following two June arrests. Reuters reported that he pleaded not guilty to pending charges and that his trial is scheduled for March 2 through March 4, 2027. The league removed him from the exempt list on October 16, making him eligible to practice and play.
The charges remain unresolved, and roster activation is not a finding about the underlying case. Reuters also reported that the NFL’s personal-conduct review remains ongoing, so future league discipline has not been ruled out.
Week 7 role against Arizona
The first checkpoint is Denver’s official inactive list, released roughly 90 minutes before kickoff. If Cooper dresses, a rotational role is more reasonable than assuming an immediate return to his usual starter workload.
Six weeks without a regular-season snap can affect conditioning, timing and assignment detail even for an experienced player. Denver can manage that risk by using Cooper on selected pass-rush downs while Bonitto, Robinson and Tillman handle the rest of the edge rotation.
The most useful early indicators will be Cooper’s total snap share, third-down usage and whether he lines up primarily across the tackle or moves inside in pressure packages. One sack would be notable, but repeatable quarterback pressure would say more about his readiness.
IDP and Broncos D/ST fantasy impact
In IDP formats, Cooper is a bench stash or deep-league defensive-line option rather than an automatic Week 7 start. His multi-year sack production is attractive, but the unknown snap count creates a low floor. Managers should wait for the inactive list and, in most formats, one game of role evidence.
Denver’s team defense receives a modest upgrade in depth. Cooper gives the Broncos another edge option while Elliss is unavailable, which can help keep Bonitto and the interior rush fresh. The defense was already generating sacks at a strong rate, so this is reinforcement rather than a complete change in fantasy value.
What to watch next
Check whether Cooper is active against Arizona, how often he plays on passing downs and whether Denver limits him to a specialized package. After Sunday, Week 8 practice participation and any comment from Joseph about the rotation will determine whether Cooper can be treated as a full-time IDP option.
The separate long-term checkpoint is the league and court process. Until either produces a new official development, Football Nation will treat the roster move, the pending case and any future discipline as distinct issues.
