Buccaneers Win Without a Completion: Bucky Irving’s Week 9 Fantasy Outlook
Tampa Bay just produced one of the strangest winning formulas of the modern NFL era: zero completed passes, a franchise-record 324 rushing yards and a 16–0 shutout of Atlanta. The Buccaneers became the first team since the 1974 Buffalo Bills — and only the second in the Super Bowl era — to win without completing a pass.
For fantasy managers, the headline is memorable but the workload is more important. Bucky Irving handled 27 carries for a career-high 170 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Gainwell added 25 attempts for a career-best 140 yards. Together, they accounted for 52 carries and 310 of Tampa Bay’s 324 rushing yards.

What happened in the zero-completion win
A torrential downpour dictated the game plan. Baker Mayfield attempted only three passes and completed none, while Tampa Bay leaned on shotgun and pistol runs, protected the football and let its defense control the game. The Buccaneers intercepted Michael Penix Jr. four times and recorded their first shutout since the 2023 season finale.
This was not a normal offensive environment. It was a weather-driven outlier that amplified Tampa Bay’s best current trait: a running game that has now produced three of the franchise’s top 10 single-game rushing totals in the last four weeks.
Bucky Irving is the clear fantasy winner
Irving’s Week 8 breakout was not an isolated volume spike. Through eight games, the Buccaneers list him with 147 carries for 728 yards and five rushing touchdowns, plus 18 catches for 78 yards and another score. He has topped 100 rushing yards in three of his last four games: 165 against Dallas, 106 at Carolina and 170 against Atlanta.
That profile keeps Irving in the weekly RB1 conversation. The encouraging part is not simply the 170 yards; it is the 27 carries and red-zone touchdown in a game Tampa Bay was determined to control on the ground. The caution is ball security: Irving lost a fumble into the end zone against Atlanta and has three fumbles with two lost this season.
Kenny Gainwell: priority handcuff, not automatic starter
Gainwell’s 140-yard eruption deserves attention, but fantasy managers should not project 25 carries as his new normal. Before Sunday, he had 33 carries for 149 yards all season. The rain, the score and Tampa Bay’s refusal to throw created a unique workload.
Still, the performance clarified his value. Gainwell is the direct complement to Irving and one of the more useful contingency backs to roster. In deeper leagues, he is a reasonable bench add. In standard 10- or 12-team formats, he is best treated as a high-upside handcuff unless Tampa Bay gives him another double-digit-touch role in Week 9.
Do not overreact to Baker Mayfield’s zero
Mayfield’s 0-for-3 line is not a quarterback evaluation. Tampa Bay’s own postgame explanation centered on the downpour and wind, and the team did not need to expose the ball after taking control. Fantasy managers should read it as a weather exception, not evidence that the Buccaneers have abandoned the pass.
Through eight games, Tampa Bay lists Mayfield at 68 completions on 110 attempts for 679 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. His Week 9 value should be reassessed using Chicago’s pass defense, Tampa Bay’s receiver availability and the Soldier Field forecast — not this one rain-soaked box score.
Buccaneers D/ST is trending up
The defense paired four interceptions with a shutout. Linebacker Alex Anzalone grabbed two first-quarter picks, while Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum added one apiece. Tampa Bay has won two straight division games and is back in the NFC South race at 3–5.
For Week 9 streaming decisions, the takeaway is that the Buccaneers can create splash plays when the run game lets them protect a lead. Four interceptions are not a sustainable weekly expectation, but the combination of ball control and takeaways raises the unit’s ceiling.
Week 9 fantasy checklist: Buccaneers at Bears
Tampa Bay visits Chicago on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday Night Football. Before setting lineups, fantasy managers should check:
• Irving’s practice participation and whether Tampa Bay continues giving him 20-plus carries.
• Gainwell’s snap share and passing-down involvement; touches matter more than his Week 8 yardage total.
• The Soldier Field weather forecast, especially wind and precipitation.
• The availability of Tampa Bay’s pass catchers before deciding whether Mayfield is a viable streamer.
• Whether the Buccaneers’ defense can carry its four-takeaway momentum into a road game.
Bottom line
The historic no-completion win confirmed that Tampa Bay can win through Irving and its defense when conditions demand it. Irving is the actionable fantasy upgrade. Gainwell is the handcuff to add, but not a must-start based on one extreme game. Mayfield and the receivers should be evaluated fresh for Week 9 rather than punished for a statistical anomaly.
Factual cutoff: November 2, 2026 at 12:16 p.m. CST. Comparison period: Buccaneers Week 8 win over Atlanta compared with Tampa Bay’s first eight 2026 games and its Week 5, Week 7 and Week 8 rushing totals. Week 9 practice participation, pass catcher availability and the Soldier Field forecast remain the next checkpoints.
