Chiefs Bench Kingsley Suamataia Again: Mahomes’ Week 9 Protection Outlook
Kansas City changed its starting offensive line again Sunday, benching left guard Kingsley Suamataia for Mike Caliendo in the 28 to 24 loss at Denver. It was the second time in four games that Suamataia did not start, and head coach Andy Reid again declined to give a public explanation beyond calling it a coaching decision.
The uncertainty matters beyond the depth chart. Patrick Mahomes produced 321 passing yards and three touchdowns, but Denver ended Kansas City’s comeback with Malcolm Roach’s fourth and goal sack on the final play. The Chiefs now have a short week of evaluation before hosting the New York Jets in Week 9.

What changed at left guard
Local reporting from KSHB confirmed Caliendo started at left guard in Denver after also replacing Suamataia in Week 4 against Las Vegas. Suamataia returned to the lineup after Kansas City’s bye and started against the Chargers and Seahawks before Sunday’s second benching.
Kansas City’s official player logs show the same pattern: Suamataia has appeared in six games and started five, while Caliendo has appeared in all seven games and started twice. The Chiefs’ published depth chart still lists Suamataia as the first team left guard, although that chart is unofficial and has not yet reflected the game day change.
What is known — and what is not
Suamataia was not listed with an injury, and the switch was described as a coach’s decision. Reid has not publicly explained the reason. That means it would be speculation to label the move disciplinary, performance based or permanent.
The next meaningful evidence will come from Wednesday practice, Reid’s media availability and Kansas City’s updated Week 9 depth chart. Until then, fantasy managers should treat left guard as an unsettled competition rather than assume Caliendo has permanently won the job.
Why the final-play sack matters
Kansas City moved inside Denver’s five-yard line with less than a minute remaining. After a false start moved fourth and goal back to the six, Roach beat the interior protection and sacked Mahomes as time expired.
One decisive snap does not establish that the lineup change caused the loss. Mahomes was sacked only twice and posted a 120.1 passer rating while the Chiefs gained 399 net yards. But the play illustrates the downside of continued offensive line turnover: communication and protection must hold in the most important moment.
Patrick Mahomes fantasy outlook
Mahomes remains a weekly fantasy starter. Through seven games, Kansas City lists him at 154 completions on 232 attempts for 1,795 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, with nine sacks taken. His 321-yard, three touchdown performance at Denver ended a two game stretch without a touchdown pass.
The left guard uncertainty is a monitoring item rather than a reason to bench Mahomes against the Jets. It could influence Kansas City’s use of quick throws, screens and extra protection, but the offense still generated explosive plays and three passing touchdowns with Caliendo starting.
Impact on the Chiefs’ skill players
A less stable interior can affect more than the quarterback. Pressure up the middle shortens routes and can reduce the time available for deep concepts. That favors quick targets to Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice and the running backs if Kansas City leans on rhythm throws.
For the running game, fantasy managers should watch who starts at left guard and whether Kansas City gets movement on early downs. The Chiefs cannot afford to become one dimensional after consecutive losses, so efficient first down rushing would help protect both Mahomes and the offensive line.
Week 9: Jets at Chiefs
Kansas City hosts New York on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. Central at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs are 5–2 after back-to-back losses, while the Jets enter 2–6.
Before finalizing Week 9 lineups, monitor these four items:
• Whether Suamataia or Caliendo receives first team left guard work Wednesday and Thursday.
• Reid’s explanation, if any, during the Week 9 media cycle.
• Kansas City’s final injury report and whether the same five linemen practice together.
• The Jets’ interior pass rush plan and Kansas City’s use of quick game concepts.
Bottom line
The headline is not that Mahomes suddenly became unplayable behind Caliendo. He threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns. The real concern is continuity: Kansas City has changed its left guard twice without publicly explaining why, and the latest game ended with pressure arriving through the interior on the decisive snap.
Mahomes remains a must start fantasy quarterback. Kelce and Rice remain strong starts. The offensive line decision is most useful as a warning to track protection, red zone efficiency and play calling before Week 9 rather than as a reason for a wholesale fantasy downgrade.
Factual cutoff: November 2, 2026 at 1:20 p.m. CST. Comparison period: Kansas City’s Week 8 loss at Denver compared with the Chiefs’ first seven games of 2026 and the Week 4 and Week 8 left guard changes. Reid’s Week 9 media availability, Wednesday and Thursday practice participation, and Kansas City’s updated depth chart are the next checkpoints.
