Chiefs Place Josh Simmons on IR: Week 7 Protection and Fantasy Impact
The Kansas City Chiefs are placing left tackle Josh Simmons on injured reserve after his recovery from a back injury stopped progressing toward game readiness. Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder said Simmons does not need surgery at this stage, but he needs more rehabilitation time before he can return to full function.
The move removes Simmons from at least the next four games and makes Week 11 against Arizona on November 22 his earliest possible return. Eligibility is not the same as clearance: Kansas City would still need to evaluate his health and make a separate activation decision.
What changed with Josh Simmons
Simmons had not played in the first five games of the 2026 season because of the back problem. The Chiefs eased him into limited practice on October 14, his first regular-season work since training camp, but he did not practice Wednesday before the Week 7 trip to Seattle. Thursday's injured-reserve decision turns a week-to-week question into a defined minimum absence.
NFL.com reported that the 23-year-old is dealing with a bulging disc and will miss at least four games. The decision is a reset for rehabilitation, not evidence of a surgical timetable or a guarantee that he returns on the first eligible date.
Kansas City's offensive line plan
Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has started at left tackle in Simmons' place, so the Chiefs are not installing a new blind-side starter days before Sunday Night Football. That continuity matters. The immediate problem is that Kansas City may also be without right tackle Jaylon Moore, who remained in the concussion protocol after leaving the Week 6 win over the Chargers.
Joshua Ezeudu finished that game at right tackle and is the clearest available contingency if Moore is not cleared. The official Wednesday report listed both Moore and Simmons as nonparticipants. Kansas City therefore must prepare for Benson at left tackle and Ezeudu at right tackle while continuing to evaluate Moore.
That is a thinner tackle configuration, but it is not an automatic collapse. The 5-0 Chiefs have won every game without Simmons this season, and Benson has accumulated real snaps at the position. The more meaningful change is that the hoped-for midseason upgrade from Simmons is no longer available during the next four-game block.
Week 7 impact against Seattle
Kansas City visits the 3-3 Seahawks on Sunday night. Seattle's pass rush can attack protection communication with crowd noise and alignment changes, so the Chiefs' best answer is likely to be structural: quicker throws, help from tight ends or backs when needed, and a run game that prevents obvious long-yardage situations.
If Moore also misses the game, Seattle can test Ezeudu early with wide rush alignments and simulated pressure. Kansas City can counter by moving the launch point, using screens and leaning on its own run game to keep the down-and-distance manageable. The inactive list remains more important than any midweek projection.
Fantasy football impact
Patrick Mahomes remains a fantasy starter. Simmons has not played this season, so the injured-reserve move does not remove a player from the lineup Mahomes used during Kansas City's 5-0 start. The risk is that Moore's concussion leaves both tackle spots dependent on the current contingency plan.
Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce should not be benched because of one offensive-line transaction. Managers should, however, expect the Chiefs to favor timing throws and protection-friendly concepts if Moore is unavailable. That can support Kelce's short-area volume while making long-developing downfield plays slightly less stable.
Seattle's defense gains modest streaming appeal only if Moore is also ruled out and the Seahawks' own injured defenders are available. One tackle move is not enough to project sacks or turnovers by itself. In daily fantasy, the safer response is to price in a little more volatility for Mahomes rather than treating him as an injury fade.
The return timeline
Simmons can become eligible after four missed games, which would put Week 11 against Arizona on November 22 in view. That date is a procedural checkpoint, not a promised return. The Chiefs will need evidence that his back has progressed, that he can tolerate a full practice workload and that activating him improves the line without disrupting a functioning group.
The most useful near-term checkpoints are Moore's concussion-protocol status, Kansas City's Thursday and Friday practice reports, and the final Sunday inactive list. The longer-term checkpoint is whether Simmons resumes football work before the Week 11 window.
Football Nation verdict
Kansas City's decision is significant because it ends the possibility of Simmons returning for the Seattle trip and the next three games. It does not require a wholesale fantasy downgrade because Benson has already handled the left-tackle role throughout the unbeaten start.
The sharper concern is cumulative. Simmons is now unavailable by rule, Moore is still being evaluated and Ezeudu may be asked to start on the right side. Mahomes remains a start, Kelce and Worthy remain usable, and Seattle's pressure matchup becomes more interesting only if the rest of the Chiefs' tackle depth also breaks against them.
