Breaking News: Commanders Trade Brian Robinson Jr. to 49ers

The Washington Commanders have officially moved on from their lead running back, trading Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick, multiple reports confirmed Friday.
Robinson’s exit had been looming after a growing rift with the team. He was held out of Monday’s preseason loss to the Bengals and excused from Wednesday’s practice as Washington explored trade options. On Friday, the deal was finalized, ending Robinson’s three-season stint as the face of the Commanders’ backfield.
The 26-year-old, drafted in the third round in 2022, logged 2,916 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns across 41 career appearances, including 37 starts. His best season came in 2023, when he piled up 1,101 scrimmage yards and nine scores. In 2024, he followed with 799 rushing yards and eight touchdowns despite appearing in just 14 games.
The Commanders will absorb part of his $3.4 million owed this season, saving cap space while turning the page at running back. Veteran Austin Ekeler is now projected to lead the depth chart, followed by Chris Rodriguez Jr. and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, both of whom flashed during preseason action.

For San Francisco, the addition of Robinson is a crucial depth move. With Christian McCaffrey firmly entrenched as the starter, Robinson immediately steps in as a physical, experienced No. 2 option and is expected to move ahead of Isaac Guerendo and others on the depth chart.
The trade continues a busy year of transactions between the two franchises, as the Commanders previously acquired wideout Deebo Samuel from the 49ers earlier this offseason.
Both teams wrap up preseason play this weekend — Washington will host the Ravens, while Robinson could potentially suit up in San Francisco’s matchup against the Chargers.
