DeMarvion Overshown Ruled Out vs. Packers: Cowboys Defense Impact
Dallas will not get linebacker DeMarvion Overshown back for Sunday night's Week 6 trip to Green Bay. The Cowboys ruled him out Saturday because of the hamstring injury that has sidelined him since the season opener, turning Friday's questionable designation into a confirmed absence.
The late decision matters because Dallas enters Lambeau Field at 2 and 3 with one of the league's most vulnerable defenses. Overshown was supposed to add speed, range and communication to the middle of that unit. Instead, rookie Jaishawn Barham remains the central figure at MIKE linebacker and with the defensive headset.
What changed with DeMarvion Overshown
On Friday, the Cowboys' official update listed Overshown as questionable after limited work, although head coach Brian Schottenheimer called him a long shot to play. The NFL's Saturday news roundup then reported that Overshown would not travel and had been ruled out against the Packers.
Overshown has missed four straight games since straining his hamstring in Week 1. He recorded seven tackles in the opener, but Dallas has had to operate without him through most of the first month. The team did not announce a new timetable Saturday, so it would be premature to assume he will return in Week 7.
Why the absence is significant for Dallas
This is not an injury update the Cowboys can absorb casually. Dallas' own statistical review entering Week 6 shows how much pressure is already on the defense:
31st in total defense at 395.4 yards allowed per game
32nd in opponent yards per play at 6.4
32nd against the run at 168.4 yards allowed per game
Last in interceptions with zero
30th with five sacks
Last on third down with opponents converting 52.6 percent
Those figures come from a DallasCowboys.com assessment of the defense. Overshown alone would not fix every category, but his pursuit speed and ability to cover space were important tools for a group that has struggled to prevent explosive plays and finish possessions.
Dallas recently added senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine, and Football Nation's breakdown of Pettine's role explains how he is supporting defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Overshown's absence makes clean communication and disciplined fits even more important against a Green Bay offense that can stress the middle of the field.
Jaishawn Barham keeps the green dot
Barham has already handled the MIKE linebacker job and the green dot while Overshown has been out. That means Dallas does not have to change its communication structure hours before kickoff. The rookie will relay Parker's calls and help align the other ten defenders.
The tradeoff is experience. Barham has flashed physical ability, but Sunday night brings a road environment, pre snap movement and a quarterback capable of changing the play when the defense reveals its intentions. The Packers can test the rookie with play action, motion and layered routes behind the linebackers.
Dallas' best answer is not to ask Barham to replace every Overshown trait by himself. The front must keep blockers from reaching the second level, the safeties must tackle cleanly and the entire unit must reduce the mental errors that have extended drives.
Packers matchup and fantasy football impact
Green Bay's offensive matchup improves slightly with Overshown unavailable, but fantasy managers should not treat one inactive linebacker as a reason to force a marginal starter into the lineup. The larger case is the full Dallas profile: poor rushing efficiency allowed, limited takeaways, a low sack total and major third down problems.
Jordan Love: Love receives a modest matchup boost. Dallas has allowed explosive gains and has not generated enough negative plays to consistently disrupt quarterbacks. He remains the most direct fantasy beneficiary of the confirmed absence.
Green Bay's active running backs: The middle of the Dallas defense remains a target. Green Bay is still managing its own injuries, including Josh Jacobs' absence, so volume may be divided. Treat the matchup as favorable, but confirm Sunday's active group before locking in a replacement back.
Packers tight ends and inside receivers: Barham and the Dallas safeties will be tested by play action and routes between the numbers. That creates opportunity, but target volume and Green Bay's rotation still matter more than the Overshown news alone.
Cowboys D/ST: Dallas was already a risky fantasy defense against Green Bay. Five sacks, zero interceptions and a 52.6 percent third down conversion rate do not provide a dependable scoring floor. Overshown being ruled out reinforces the fade in standard leagues.

What to watch Sunday night
Whether Barham continues to wear the green dot for every defensive package
How often Green Bay attacks between the tackles and behind play action
Whether Dallas can improve its third down rush without exposing the middle
Which safety is asked to support Barham against tight ends and crossing routes
Whether the Cowboys can create their first interception of the season
Football Nation conclusion
Overshown's return would have provided a badly needed athletic and communication boost. Instead, Dallas heads to Lambeau without him and with the same defensive core that has allowed 395.4 yards per game. Barham's experience over the past four games prevents a total reset, but the rookie and the players around him must be sharper than the season numbers suggest.
For fantasy managers, the news strengthens the existing case for Love and weakens an already thin Cowboys D/ST profile. It should not override final inactive reports, workload expectations or Green Bay's own injury limitations.
