Do NFL Preseason Games Count? What Carries Into the Season
Updated: 6 hours ago
NFL preseason wins, losses and player statistics are recorded separately from regular season results. They do not improve a team's regular season record or playoff tiebreakers. Every club begins the regular season at zero wins and zero losses.

What carries forward is the effect on people and decisions: health, roster status, preparation and the coaches' assessment of who can handle a role.
Why the final score needs context
Teams use exhibition games differently. One may rest established starters while another tests a new quarterback or offensive line. The same final score can therefore combine several different personnel matchups and coaching objectives.
Preseason passing yards do not become regular season passing yards. A preseason win does not become a tiebreaker in December. Exhibition production remains useful evidence only when you understand who played, against whom and in what circumstances.
The film can decide a job
A reserve who communicates correctly, protects the ball and contributes on special teams can strengthen his case for a roster spot. A missed assignment can matter even on a play that gained yards.
For a running back, pass protection may reveal more about an available passing down role than one long carry. For a receiver, route participation and snap share can describe opportunity more clearly than a touchdown against late reserves.
Injuries also remain real. The fact that a game does not affect standings does not reduce the physical consequences or make medical availability reset at Week 1.
Avoid both extremes
Calling preseason meaningless ignores its evaluation purpose. Treating one impressive quarter as proof of a regular season breakout ignores the small sample and uneven competition.
Compare game usage with repeated practice reports and the depth of the lineup. First unit work, protection responsibility and special teams assignments can reveal trust. A late appearance may simply provide developmental repetitions.
For standard fantasy leagues that begin with the regular season, preseason production earns no regular season fantasy points. Its value is indirect: better information about potential opportunity.
The most useful viewing questions are who is being tested, what job he is performing and whether the evidence repeats. The exhibition record stays behind; those decisions can shape the roster that starts the season.
