Jonnu Smith Packers Signing: What It Means for Tucker Kraft

The Green Bay Packers signed veteran tight end Jonnu Smith to a one-year contract, adding experienced depth behind Tucker Kraft while Luke Musgrave remains sidelined by a neck injury. The practical fantasy answer is immediate: hold Kraft in the starting-tight-end tier, do not draft Smith in a normal 12-team league yet, and monitor Green Bay’s first full practice and Week 1 route distribution before changing either ranking.

The move protects the Packers against uncertainty; it does not automatically create a committee. Kraft was activated from the physically unable to perform list on July 31 after surgery last November to repair a torn right ACL, and ESPN reports he is expected to be available for the September 13 opener at Minnesota. Smith, 31, played all 17 games for Pittsburgh in 2025 and made seven starts. His 38 catches, 222 yards and two receiving touchdowns were a sharp step down from his 2024 Pro Bowl season in Miami, when he produced career highs of 88 receptions and 884 yards with eight touchdowns. The Packers are buying proven versatility, but they are not necessarily buying the 2024 target volume.

The scheme connection is real. LaFleur was Tennessee’s offensive coordinator in 2018 while Smith was a young Titans tight end. Smith can align off the line, move across the formation and handle designed touches that differ from Kraft’s more conventional every-down role. That familiarity matters with so little installation time before the season.

Green Bay’s official site discussed the reported signing Friday and described Smith as a veteran who can fill an H-back role. Reuters and ESPN reported the one-year agreement, while the Packers’ official August 28 analysis connected the move directly to the injured tight-end room. No contract value had been announced in those reports.

Why Tucker Kraft remains the fantasy priority

Kraft’s value rests on routes, red-zone work and his ability after the catch—not simply on being the only healthy name on the depth chart. Smith’s arrival lowers the emergency floor around the offense, but it does not erase Kraft’s established connection with Jordan Love.

The risk is workload management. A returning player can be medically available without immediately running a full route tree on every passing down. Smith could absorb motion, backfield and short-area assignments while Kraft ramps up. If that happens, Kraft’s weekly ceiling would become more touchdown-dependent even if he remains the starter.

For current drafts, keep Kraft on the same tier unless Green Bay shows a real split with the first-team offense. Smith is a waiver watch in standard leagues and a final-round consideration only in deep, two-tight-end or tight-end-premium formats.

What the signing means for Luke Musgrave and the depth chart

Musgrave’s neck injury is the clearest reason Green Bay needed another veteran. ESPN reported that he missed all of training camp and remained on PUP. Josh Whyle was the only other experienced option, and he caught five passes in eight games last season. Smith can enter the Week 1 plan without forcing the Packers to rush Musgrave back.

That does not guarantee Smith a permanent role. If Kraft proves ready for normal snaps and Musgrave later returns, Green Bay could use three tight ends situationally or reduce Smith to a specialist package. The roster decision creates flexibility; practice usage will determine fantasy value.

Downgrade Kraft if he misses consecutive full practices, opens the season on a strict snap count, or Smith consistently runs first-team routes in passing situations. Upgrade Smith from watchlist status if he earns most of the third-down work, receives designed red-zone touches or plays ahead of Kraft in obvious passing packages.

Move the other direction if Kraft handles a normal practice workload and Smith is limited to backup or H-back packages. Musgrave’s return would further narrow Smith’s route share.
