How an 18 Game NFL Season Would Change the Schedule

The NFL’s published scheduling framework uses 17 regular season games over 18 weeks, with one bye per team. An 18 week season is therefore not an 18 game season. Preseason and playoff games are separate.

An extra regular season game would change more than the calendar’s length. A proposal must address competition, player workload and the agreement governing NFL employment. Public enthusiasm for an idea does not establish its effective date.

What the current schedule contains

The 17 opponents include six division games, games against rotating divisions and additional matchups based on the previous season’s standings. Across 32 teams, that produces 272 games because every game appears on two teams' schedules.

Most teams also play three preseason games. Those exhibitions provide the evaluation opportunities that can matter most to reserves and players competing for a roster spot.

Questions any expansion must answer

A complete proposal needs to explain compensation, rest and bye weeks, roster capacity, preseason length and the new opponent formula. Moving from an odd to an even number of games could also change the home and away balance, but international assignments would still need their own treatment.

The comparison cannot assume that an exhibition and a regular season game create identical workloads. Coaches can restrict a starter’s preseason snaps while using the game to evaluate depth. A game that affects playoff qualification creates different incentives.

The roster system also matters: additional dates can change how clubs think about depth, reserve lists and developing players.

Read an expansion headline carefully

Separate four stages: a preference expressed by an owner, a proposal being discussed, an approved agreement, and an announced effective season. Those statements have different evidentiary weight.
