NFL Power Rankings Week 3: Bills Lead, Broncos Make Biggest Leap

13 min read

Buffalo remains Football Nation’s No. 1 team entering Week 3, but San Francisco has closed the gap. The Bills own the best two-win résumé, while the 49ers own the best point differential. Kansas City, Philadelphia and Seattle complete the top five after a week that punished Baltimore, Chicago and Houston and rewarded Denver, Las Vegas, New England and New Orleans.

This ranking was checked Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after every Week 2 game was final. It uses the official NFL standings, completed Week 2 results, the official Week 3 schedule, opponent quality, scoring margin, roster strength and confirmed injury information. Movement is measured from Football Nation’s Week 2 power rankings.

How Football Nation ranks the league

A power ranking is not a standings table. Record matters, but so do the quality and repeatability of the performance. A close road loss to Kansas City can improve an evaluation; a narrow win over a weak opponent may not. Point differential is useful after two weeks, but it is still a small sample. Injuries change the forward-looking grade only when the status is confirmed or the next checkpoint is clearly labeled.

Football Nation NFL Power Rankings: Week 3

1. Buffalo Bills (2-0) | Previous: 1 | No change

Latest result: beat Detroit 41-31. Season scoring: 77 points for, 62 against (+15). Strength: Josh Allen powered another high-leverage win, and Buffalo now owns two victories over teams that entered the season with playoff expectations. Concern: The defense has allowed 62 points, so the No. 1 résumé is stronger than the early defensive efficiency. Next opponent: Los Angeles Chargers at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Bills keep the crown because opponent quality and late-game execution remain the best combination in the league.

2. San Francisco 49ers (2-0) | Previous: 3 | Up 1

Latest result: beat Miami 35-13. Season scoring: 62 points for, 20 against (+42). Strength: San Francisco owns the league’s best point differential at plus 42 after controlling both games. Concern: The opening two opponents are a combined 1-3, so the schedule has not yet supplied an elite test. Next opponent: Arizona at home.

Football Nation verdict: The 49ers have been the most complete team through two weeks and are one more dominant result from a real No. 1 debate.

3. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) | Previous: 5 | Up 2

Latest result: beat Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime. Season scoring: 64 points for, 40 against (+24). Strength: Patrick Mahomes and the situational offense answered every late Indianapolis challenge. Concern: The Chiefs needed overtime against an 0-2 opponent and allowed 30 points after dominating Denver in Week 1. Next opponent: Miami on the road.

Football Nation verdict: Kansas City moves up because it keeps solving different game scripts, even when the performance is imperfect.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) | Previous: 6 | Up 2

Latest result: beat Tennessee 24-20. Season scoring: 48 points for, 42 against (+6). Strength: Philadelphia has closed two one-score games without giving away the decisive possession. Concern: A plus 6 point differential is modest for an unbeaten contender, and neither win created real separation. Next opponent: Chicago on Monday night.

Football Nation verdict: The Eagles are winning the moments that matter, but they have not yet produced a four-quarter statement.

5. Seattle Seahawks (2-0) | Previous: 4 | Down 1

Latest result: beat Arizona 31-7. Season scoring: 44 points for, 17 against (+27). Strength: Seattle’s defense has allowed only 17 points and just delivered the week’s cleanest divisional road win. Concern: The quarterback situation and a 13-point opener still matter when comparing Seattle with the four teams above it. Next opponent: Washington on the road.

Football Nation verdict: A small drop is about the teams that passed Seattle, not a downgrade of the Seahawks’ convincing 2-0 start.

6. Cincinnati Bengals (2-0) | Previous: 9 | Up 3

Latest result: beat Houston 20-6. Season scoring: 53 points for, 33 against (+20). Strength: Cincinnati followed a turnover-heavy opener with a defense-first road win, expanding the ways it can win. Concern: The offense produced only 20 points against an 0-2 Houston team and has not yet reached top gear. Next opponent: Pittsburgh on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The Bengals are unbeaten with a plus 20 differential and deserve top-six treatment before a physical division test.

7. Minnesota Vikings (2-0) | Previous: 10 | Up 3

Latest result: beat Chicago 9-3. Season scoring: 48 points for, 25 against (+23). Strength: Minnesota has allowed only 25 points and proved it can win a defensive grinder after a 39-point opener. Concern: Nine offensive points creates a real ceiling question, especially away from home. Next opponent: Tampa Bay on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The Vikings climb because their defense travels and their résumé includes a decisive rivalry win over Green Bay.

8. Las Vegas Raiders (2-0) | Previous: 17 | Up 9

Latest result: beat the Chargers 26-14. Season scoring: 53 points for, 27 against (+26). Strength: The Raiders have won both games by double digits and own a plus 26 point differential. Concern: Miami and the Chargers are a combined 0-4, so opponent quality limits how high the surprise start can climb. Next opponent: New Orleans on the road.

Football Nation verdict: Las Vegas has earned respect, but Week 3 is the next test of whether this is a contender’s formula or a schedule-driven surge.

9. Los Angeles Rams (1-1) | Previous: 12 | Up 3

Latest result: beat the Giants 28-6. Season scoring: 35 points for, 33 against (+2). Strength: Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes and the Rams turned Monday night into a needed reset. Concern: Puka Nacua missed the game with a hip and groin issue, and his next official practice status is the checkpoint. Next opponent: Denver on the road Sunday night.

Football Nation verdict: The blowout restored confidence, but the Rams still need to show their Week 1 collapse was the outlier.

10. Baltimore Ravens (1-1) | Previous: 2 | Down 8

Latest result: lost to New Orleans 24-17. Season scoring: 58 points for, 47 against (+11). Strength: Baltimore’s 41-point opening win still shows a top-tier offensive ceiling. Concern: Losing at home to New Orleans exposed the week-to-week volatility that a No. 2 ranking could not survive. Next opponent: Dallas on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The roster keeps Baltimore in the top ten, but the Saints loss creates one of Week 3’s most urgent rebound tests.

11. Detroit Lions (1-1) | Previous: 8 | Down 3

Latest result: lost to Buffalo 41-31. Season scoring: 62 points for, 71 against (-9). Strength: Detroit has scored 31 points in both games and remains dangerous across multiple personnel packages. Concern: The defense has allowed 71 points, and Avonte Maddox’s season-ending foot surgery thins the secondary. Next opponent: New York Jets at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Lions stay close to the top ten because losing a shootout to Buffalo is not the same as failing against a bottom-tier team.

12. Green Bay Packers (1-1) | Previous: 21 | Up 9

Latest result: beat the Jets 20-17 in overtime. Season scoring: 42 points for, 56 against (-14). Strength: Green Bay erased a late deficit and found enough explosive offense to finish an overtime road comeback. Concern: The season point differential remains minus 14 after the Week 1 defensive collapse in Minnesota. Next opponent: Atlanta at home Thursday night.

Football Nation verdict: The comeback repairs confidence, but the Packers still need a complete defensive performance.

Green Bay’s official X account supplied the Week 2 comeback context used in the Packers’ rise. The native status is embedded here because the response under pressure matters more than the final score alone.

13. Dallas Cowboys (1-1) | Previous: 22 | Up 9

Latest result: beat Washington 37-20. Season scoring: 57 points for, 48 against (+9). Strength: Dallas produced 37 points and turned a divisional game into a decisive second-half win. Concern: The opening loss to the Giants prevents one strong result from restoring preseason contender status. Next opponent: Baltimore at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Cowboys made the offensive correction they needed; now they face a much stronger measuring stick.

14. Denver Broncos (1-1) | Previous: 28 | Up 14

Latest result: beat Jacksonville 20-13. Season scoring: 30 points for, 44 against (-14). Strength: Denver held a capable Jacksonville offense to 13 points and responded to its Week 1 embarrassment. Concern: Thirty total points through two games and a minus 14 differential show the offense remains the limiting factor. Next opponent: Los Angeles Rams at home Sunday night.

Football Nation verdict: Denver is the week’s biggest riser because the defense looked real, not because every offensive concern disappeared.

Latest result: beat Pittsburgh 20-3. Season scoring: 30 points for, 16 against (+14). Strength: New England has allowed only 16 points and dominated the Steelers without needing offensive fireworks. Concern: The offense has scored 30 points across two games, leaving little margin when the defense is merely average. Next opponent: Jacksonville on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The Patriots’ defense has earned a top-half ranking; the offense must now prove it can travel.

16. New Orleans Saints (1-1) | Previous: 25 | Up 9

Latest result: beat Baltimore 24-17. Season scoring: 54 points for, 48 against (+6). Strength: New Orleans followed an overtime fight in Detroit with the week’s best upset, on the road against Baltimore. Concern: The defense has still allowed 48 points, and two close games provide a small sample. Next opponent: Las Vegas at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Saints are the highest-ranked 1-1 team outside the established contender group because their opponent résumé is excellent.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) | Previous: 11 | Down 6

Latest result: lost to Denver 20-13. Season scoring: 47 points for, 30 against (+17). Strength: Jacksonville still owns a plus 17 point differential because of its dominant opener. Concern: Thirteen points against Denver erased the offensive certainty created by Trevor Lawrence’s four-touchdown Week 1. Next opponent: New England at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Jaguars remain inside the top 20, but the Patriots matchup will test whether the opener was sustainable.

18. Indianapolis Colts (0-2) | Previous: 27 | Up 9

Latest result: lost to Kansas City 33-30 in overtime. Season scoring: 53 points for, 74 against (-21). Strength: Indianapolis scored 30 at Arrowhead and pushed the undefeated Chiefs through overtime. Concern: The Colts are still 0-2 with a minus 21 differential after allowing 74 points. Next opponent: Houston at home.

Football Nation verdict: This is an opponent-adjusted rise: the result was a loss, but the performance was far stronger than several one-win teams produced.

19. New York Giants (1-1) | Previous: 16 | Down 3

Latest result: lost to the Rams 28-6. Season scoring: 34 points for, 48 against (-14). Strength: The Week 1 win over Dallas remains meaningful evidence that New York can finish a divisional game. Concern: Jaxson Dart left Monday night with a knee injury; X-rays were negative, but the MRI result is the next factual checkpoint. Next opponent: Tennessee at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Giants fall because the offense collapsed and the quarterback uncertainty changes the short-term outlook.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) | Previous: 15 | Down 5

Latest result: lost to New England 20-3. Season scoring: 23 points for, 33 against (-10). Strength: Pittsburgh’s defensive front still gives the team a repeatable weekly path. Concern: The offense has scored only 16 non-defensive points across two games and was held to three in New England. Next opponent: Cincinnati at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Steelers need an offensive answer immediately or their Week 1 win will look increasingly fragile.

21. New York Jets (1-1) | Previous: 19 | Down 2

Latest result: lost to Green Bay 20-17 in overtime. Season scoring: 40 points for, 30 against (+10). Strength: The Jets have allowed only 30 points and led a credible opponent late. Concern: They failed to close the game and now face a Detroit offense averaging 31 points. Next opponent: Detroit on the road.

Football Nation verdict: New York remains competitive, but a moral victory cannot outweigh the missed chance at 2-0.

22. Cleveland Browns (1-1) | Previous: 29 | Up 7

Latest result: beat Tampa Bay 23-19. Season scoring: 33 points for, 53 against (-20). Strength: Cleveland found a fourth-quarter answer and avoided the 0-2 hole. Concern: The Browns still have a minus 20 differential after the 34-10 opening loss. Next opponent: Carolina at home.

Football Nation verdict: The win earns a rise, but the offense must show that 23 points is a floor rather than an exception.

23. Chicago Bears (1-1) | Previous: 7 | Down 16

Latest result: lost to Minnesota 9-3. Season scoring: 62 points for, 46 against (+16). Strength: The 59-point opener remains the league’s single biggest offensive explosion. Concern: Three points in Week 2 and Caleb Williams’ week-to-week hamstring status turn certainty into volatility. Next opponent: Philadelphia at home Monday night.

Football Nation verdict: Chicago owns the week’s biggest fall because the offense moved from historic output to almost nothing.

24. Carolina Panthers (1-1) | Previous: 31 | Up 7

Latest result: beat Atlanta 34-3. Season scoring: 71 points for, 62 against (+9). Strength: Carolina has scored 71 points, and the 31-point Week 2 win paired offense with a dominant defensive response. Concern: The Panthers allowed 59 points in the opener, so the defensive floor remains a serious warning. Next opponent: Cleveland on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The Panthers are one of the league’s hardest teams to place; Week 3 will show which version travels.

25. Los Angeles Chargers (0-2) | Previous: 18 | Down 7

Latest result: lost to Las Vegas 26-14. Season scoring: 28 points for, 52 against (-24). Strength: The roster still carries premium talent at quarterback and across the defensive front. Concern: The Chargers have scored 14 points in both games and have not produced a winning fourth quarter. Next opponent: Buffalo on the road.

Football Nation verdict: A trip to the No. 1 team creates the harshest possible checkpoint for an 0-2 club.

26. Houston Texans (0-2) | Previous: 13 | Down 13

Latest result: lost to Cincinnati 20-6. Season scoring: 37 points for, 56 against (-19). Strength: Houston’s Week 1 offense moved the ball against Buffalo and showed a real ceiling. Concern: Six points in Week 2 and consecutive home losses leave no room to rank the Texans on reputation. Next opponent: Indianapolis on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The Colts game is already a standings pressure point: one of these teams will leave Week 3 with a damaging start.

27. Arizona Cardinals (1-1) | Previous: 14 | Down 13

Latest result: lost to Seattle 31-7. Season scoring: 33 points for, 45 against (-12). Strength: Arizona still owns a road win over the Chargers and a capable rushing foundation. Concern: The Cardinals were outscored 24-0 after the Seattle game was tied and generated only seven points. Next opponent: San Francisco on the road.

Football Nation verdict: Arizona’s Week 1 surge is on hold until the offense proves it can function against a top defense.

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2) | Previous: 20 | Down 8

Latest result: lost to Cleveland 23-19. Season scoring: 46 points for, 56 against (-10). Strength: Tampa Bay has been competitive in both games and has scored enough to create late chances. Concern: Back-to-back losses to Cincinnati and Cleveland have included too many possession-losing mistakes. Next opponent: Minnesota at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Buccaneers are better than several teams below them, but 0-2 requires evidence, not projections.

29. Washington Commanders (0-2) | Previous: 23 | Down 6

Latest result: lost to Dallas 37-20. Season scoring: 42 points for, 61 against (-19). Strength: Washington pushed Philadelphia to the final possession in Week 1 and still has playmakers around the quarterback. Concern: Jayden Daniels’ dislocated left elbow changes the offense, while the defense has allowed 61 points. Next opponent: Seattle at home.

Football Nation verdict: The Commanders’ injury and schedule make the 0-2 start more dangerous than the raw scores alone suggest.

30. Atlanta Falcons (0-2) | Previous: 26 | Down 4

Latest result: lost to Carolina 34-3. Season scoring: 16 points for, 54 against (-38). Strength: The defense kept the opener competitive for long stretches in Pittsburgh. Concern: Atlanta has scored 16 points all season and just lost by 31 at home. Next opponent: Green Bay on the road Thursday night.

Football Nation verdict: Michael Penix Jr. is expected to start, but the short week leaves little time to repair the league’s lowest-scoring offense.

31. Tennessee Titans (0-2) | Previous: 32 | Up 1

Latest result: lost to Philadelphia 24-20. Season scoring: 30 points for, 47 against (-17). Strength: Tennessee pushed an undefeated Philadelphia team through a one-score fourth quarter. Concern: The Titans are still winless and have scored only 30 points across two games. Next opponent: New York Giants on the road.

Football Nation verdict: The performance earns a small rise, but the offense still must turn competitiveness into points and a win.

32. Miami Dolphins (0-2) | Previous: 30 | Down 2

Latest result: lost to San Francisco 35-13. Season scoring: 26 points for, 62 against (-36). Strength: Miami’s skill-position speed can still create isolated explosive plays. Concern: The Dolphins have lost both games by 14 or more, own a minus 36 differential and have not protected the quarterback consistently. Next opponent: Kansas City at home.

Football Nation verdict: No team has supplied less complete evidence through two weeks, and the schedule offers no soft landing.

Biggest risers

Denver climbs 14 places after holding Jacksonville to 13 points. Las Vegas, Green Bay, Dallas, New England, New Orleans and Indianapolis each rise nine. The Raiders and Broncos are the cleanest examples of why early rankings must move aggressively when new evidence arrives. Indianapolis is different: the Colts are 0-2, but taking Kansas City to overtime on the road was far stronger evidence than their Week 1 loss.

Biggest fallers

Chicago falls 16 places after following a 59-point opener with three points and a quarterback injury concern. Houston and Arizona each fall 13. Baltimore drops eight after losing at home to New Orleans, while Tampa Bay also falls eight and the Chargers fall seven. These are not season-ending judgments. They are the cost of weak Week 2 evidence in a league with only two completed games.

The bubble: teams 15 through 22

New England and New Orleans own convincing defensive results, but neither has earned top-12 stability. Jacksonville’s opener remains valuable, Indianapolis’ road performance in Kansas City was better than its record, and the Giants’ quarterback uncertainty keeps them from rising. Pittsburgh, the Jets and Cleveland have one win each, yet all three still carry major offensive questions.

Four ranking debates that matter

Bills or 49ers at No. 1: Buffalo has the stronger opponent résumé; San Francisco has the league’s best plus 42 differential. Raiders at No. 8: two double-digit wins demand respect, but the opponents are 0-4. Colts at No. 18: record says winless; the Kansas City tape says dangerous. Panthers at No. 24: a 59-point defensive collapse and a 31-point win exist in the same two-game sample.

What Week 3 can change

The most important games for the ranking are Rams at Broncos, Ravens at Cowboys, Bengals at Steelers and Eagles at Bears. Buffalo and San Francisco have opportunities to validate the top two spots. Kansas City visits the league’s No. 32 team, so style points will matter less than health and execution. Football Nation’s detailed Bills 41, Lions 31 recap, 49ers 35, Dolphins 13 recap, Chiefs 33, Colts 30 recap and Rams 28, Giants 6 recap provide the game-level evidence behind the largest contender decisions.

Football Nation conclusion

Buffalo stays first because it has beaten Houston and Detroit and has answered in the fourth quarter twice. San Francisco is closer than any other challenger because no team has controlled the scoreboard as thoroughly. Denver is the week’s biggest riser, Chicago the biggest faller, and the Raiders the most fascinating unbeaten team. The next checkpoint is the official midweek injury cycle, followed by Falcons at Packers on Thursday night. Week 3 should tell us whether the surprise teams have built repeatable identities or merely caught the league before it adjusted.
